AIBU to think that people should clean up after themselves in a cinema?

Just came back from the cinema, saw Moana (fantastic movie, btw).
Families with little kids all around us, all with large. popcorn/drink combos or similar.
Now there will always be some spillage, especially with kids. But this wasn't only spilt popcorn or ice-cream. They simply got up and left all wrappers, drink cups and packaging behind.
AIBU to believe that teaching your children to take their trash with them and dump it into a bin outside is basic manners? How can they leave a room looking like a pigsty?

Do people think it's okay for a cinema, which generates a huge amount of rubbish at vast profit, to rely on council tax payers to pay for its disposal?

Because that's what's happening when you take your rubbish out of the cinema and put it in the local authority bin to be emptied by local authority refuse workers.

Luckily, local authorities think of this so you don't have to. They make an extra charge for commercial waste disposal and impose sanctions against offending businesses. Responsible businesses regard this as a business expense and make strenuous efforts to ensure that patrons don't litter the streets because they will get a heavy fine if that happens. That's what Vue is doing.

Similarly, would you think it was okay if you were charged the same for chucking a couple of empties away at the weekend as the pub up the road every day?

almondpudding · 07/12/2016 00:17

Limited, don't people generally put their rubbish in the bins in the cinema?

almondpudding · 07/12/2016 00:24

And I'm assuming from what you've said, it is a problem where you go - central London. In which case those cinemas should be providing more bins.

But that's not my experience at least the Odeons I go to (limitless card), there are loads of bins. And the same at the local arty type cinema.

I haven't been to a vue in six months, but they always had loads of bins too. Maybe not anymore if there is now a recycling rule.

Tarla · 07/12/2016 09:51

The "leave your rubbish by your seat" advert that Vue use is usually on during the adverts before the film, it's a still image of a cinema seat and empty popcorn tub on a yellow background.

DeleteOrDecay · 07/12/2016 09:54

To be honest with the extortionate prices they charge for drinks and snacks, I'm not surprised people leave their rubbish behind. Maybe people assume that the cleaning up is included in the price?Grin

limitedperiodonly · 07/12/2016 10:59

Why should they? Presumably the system works for them. Perhaps there isn't enough room for all the bins needed to hold that volume of rubbish. Perhaps having people queueing for bins would mean they didn't exit the cinema quickly enough. Perhaps it's easier to hoover or bag it up than empty bins. I don't know. But as long as the cinema or any other business doesn't pass the problem onto the local authority, it's up to them how they collect and dispose of rubbish.

rightsofwomen · 07/12/2016 11:11

I take my rubbish with me wherever I am and teach my children to do the same.
I haven't seen the Vue ad, but when I do I will still tidy up with my children and leave the rubbish tidy on the seat or wherever they ask you to leave it (oxymoron?).

almondpudding · 08/12/2016 13:22

Sorry, limited period, I'm not following.

I thought you were saying you had some local cinema where people are dumping rubbish from the cinema in local bins, and you wanted something done about it. As I've said, I've no experience of this or where you live. It's up to your cinema and council what they want to do.

My experience is that cinemas have loads of bins and people put their rubbish in the bins.

limitedperiodonly · 08/12/2016 18:36

Now I'm confused almondpudding. It doesn't matter where you or I do to the cinema. Rubbish collection and disposal has to be paid for. If you dutifully carry your rubbish from the cinema and dump it in the nearest local authority bin that's your decision. But why should residential council tax payers pay to take away the rubbish generated by businesses? Polluters should pay for the costs of their pollution.

maggiethemagpie · 08/12/2016 18:44

I would try not to leave my seat like a pigsty but would leave eg empty popcorn box, empty can etc.

It's around £10 a ticket at my local cinema I expect that price to include the convenience of not having to cart my rubbish about with me afterwards.

limitedperiodonly · 08/12/2016 18:52

I don't litter. But I do understand why businesses encourage patrons to leave their litter on their premises. It might look shitty but if they want to do it, then maybe it's the best thing.

Taking litter away from a local polluter instead of expecting them to deal with themselves is a big problem. You virtuously dump it in a local authority bin. Good for you. Now the local tax payer is paying for it. Why don't you take it home?

JustSpeakSense · 08/12/2016 19:00

The exorbitant prices charged for drinks and popcorn etc. covers the cost of clearing it away and disposing of it surely?

I usually try to scoop up any mess, and pile it all together neatly, and leave it behind, but by the time we are making our way out (of the still dark theatre) staff are already on their way in with bin bags.

I have never seen anyone carrying their empty containers away with them Lol

almondpudding · 08/12/2016 19:42

I still don't understand Limitedperiod.

I don't put rubbish from the cinema in local authority bins.

I put the rubbish in the bins in the cinema. They have them outside of each screen and outside the door of each loo, as well as other points.

oblada · 08/12/2016 19:55

Its an absolute pet hate of mine! And let's not get started with families in restaurants leaving a pigsty behind them!
I don't like buying loads of crap at the cinema so that limits the rubbish but otherwise I will take it out and bin it (usually there is a bin or someone with a bin bag nearby). If the cinema does say to leave it behind I'll put it neatly at the end of the row. It's just basic manners really, it's not a great effort at all and it's important for children to learn this (so that later on they can also do it without it feeling like a chore, it should just be natural).

limitedperiodonly · 08/12/2016 20:13

You don't almondpudding, neither do I, but we are in the minority

In your situation your cinema is diposing of therubbish placed in the bins on their premises. They will also be disposing of the rubbish left on the floor in their premises. This will all count as commercial waste and they will be charged for it when they put it out for disposal by the local authority or by a private contractor.

They will probably also be charged by the local authority for a littering tax because of the litter they generate that is discarded by their patrons and collected by the local authority. It doesn't matter where you live. It costs money to empty bins and sweep the streets and dispose of rubbish. That goes on the council tax.

Some local authorities are very aggressive about making polluters pay. It is very easy to trace litter - piles of popcorn and buckets branded Vue? Easy. That's why I guess Vue encourage patrons to leave their rubbish behind so they can deal with it.
