Went shopping yesterday and saw a lovely man's top displayed with 30% off. It cost £60. So expected to pay £40. I was charged £42. This was a large, well known store. I queried it and I was told a confused story about 10% and something else. There was a long queue and I was lost by an explanation that he didn't seem to understand either so I left it. AIBU to think I should have received the offer displayed?

Your maths is dodgy-30% of £60 is £18. £60-£18 is £42.
It would have to be a third off to be £40.

30% is not a third, a third is 33.3333%.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 04/12/2016 09:42

YANBU

30% off £60 is £18 - 10% would be £6 so three times that is £18. Therefore the discount price is £42.

Wanting a £60 top for £40 would be a discount of 1/3 or 33.3%

DameXanaduBramble · 04/12/2016 09:42

But the shop was correct. 30% off would be £42!

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2016 09:44

This does give me something to tell my GCSE pupils when they whinge about maths being a waste of time in the real world.

SmallBee · 04/12/2016 09:44

I'm glad it's not just me who is crap at maths Grin

LemonRedwood · 04/12/2016 09:44

You did receive the discount offered.

10% of 60 is £6 off
So 30% is 3x10% = 3x£6 = £18 off

Don't worry op I make the same mistakes daily!Blush

dementedpixie · 04/12/2016 09:47

Yabu, you got the displayed offer

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2016 09:48

Calculators don't always help getoutofmycar-you have to know how to use them and have a common sense filter for the results.

You get some very comedy answers from students who blindly believe what the calculator tells them.

I'm having flashbacks to the time I went shopping with my mother and she bought 5 things, each with 20% off. She was absolutely insistent that she'd got 100% off ....

There were five of us, all explaining the maths/arguing why she was wrong for over half an hour, but she was right and we were all wrong!

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 04/12/2016 09:51

There but for the grace of God go I, OP. Grin

I'd probably have had a wee humphy face on me in the store too.

Retail staff really earn their money I think.

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 09:53

Ah....

Ooops. I can see this being a GCSE question.

happydays spent £60 but was given 30% off. She was told it was £42 so she complained on Mumsnet. Please write an explanation of why she was wrong and work out what she should have paid.

HappydaysArehere · 04/12/2016 09:53

Of course! What an idiot. I had even asked someone else and she also said it should have been £40! Of course I simply cut it into a third of 60.
I am now enjoying my purchase even more. Thanks a lot.

Good job you left it and didn't query it further...

RentANDBills · 04/12/2016 09:55

Best way to work the discounts is as PP has said.

Work out 10% and then multiple that discount by however many times. In this case three.

I think that's what the shop assistant was probably trying to say about 10%

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 09:56

Daily Mail fodder coming up.

Can you work out 30% of £60?

Hoppinggreen · 04/12/2016 09:56

Very simple way of working things like this out.
10% of £60 is £6
3x6 is £18 - so that's the discount.
I'm rubbish at maths but even I can do that !!
