Went shopping yesterday and saw a lovely man's top displayed with 30% off. It cost £60. So expected to pay £40. I was charged £42. This was a large, well known store. I queried it and I was told a confused story about 10% and something else. There was a long queue and I was lost by an explanation that he didn't seem to understand either so I left it. AIBU to think I should have received the offer displayed?

Oops maths fail. Don't worry you can enjoy it knowing you weren't short changed!

woodhill · 04/12/2016 09:58

As others have said 30% is £18 discount. Really useful life skills

WetPaint4 · 04/12/2016 09:58

I do think it's helpful when shops use signs or labels to indicate the discounted prices.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 04/12/2016 10:01

The man on the checkout clearly didn't understand how 30% off works either if he wasn't able to tell you, if that's any reassurance OP!

It would be funny if you'd convinced him :)

HappydaysArehere · 04/12/2016 10:04

The stupid thing is that is how I have always worked it out by using the 10% and multiplying it. I am now really worried about my mind going to pot.
Please believe I am not usually so confused. Have to blame Christmas shopping and a lot of stress of late. Thank you all. Pleased I gave you all a good laugh [embarrassed]

Don't worry we all get confused sometimes!

Sounds like you got a good deal anyway op

KitKat1985 · 04/12/2016 10:06

Bless you OP. Grin

whyohwhy000 · 04/12/2016 10:08

I suggest you get this deleted unless you want this to go in the Daily Mail.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 04/12/2016 10:08

happy days

These things happen, nobody gets everything right all the time. I often forget how to spell things like the, it's just one of those things.

amispartacus · 04/12/2016 10:13

At least you're not arguing everyone is wrong and you're right Grin

LostMyBigGirlPants · 04/12/2016 10:15

Now Matthew Wright can call us innumerate harridans! Grin

my maths is appalling

LostMyBigGirlPants · 04/12/2016 10:17

also my strike-throughout Blush

chipsandgin · 04/12/2016 10:17

Awkward! I love the idea of you harrumphing out of the shop thinking you'd been diddled (& being cross enough to post on here!). Oops!

Agree with pp though - this will end up in the Daily Fail if you're not careful, prob best to get it deleted OP?

LostMyBigGirlPants · 04/12/2016 10:18

strike-through*. I give up!

HappydaysArehere · 04/12/2016 10:22

WhyohwhyOOO, thanks for the warning. That's another reason why I won't buy the Daily Mail!!! Seriously worried about my mind. Worried about going out now. I have always worked discounts before and in the same way as suggested so what has happened to me?

FizzBombBathTime · 04/12/2016 10:24

You're probably just stressed with Christmas/ who to buy for/ work etc

It's like when you look for something and it's right under your nose but you can't see for looking

Crisscrosscranky · 04/12/2016 10:27

How many people have you told this story to? Xmas Grin

EweAreHere · 04/12/2016 10:28

30% off is not the same as one third off.

FizzBombBathTime · 04/12/2016 10:28

RTFT Ewe...

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 04/12/2016 10:30

haahahahaaa...I call this Bad Maths....it all makes sense in my mind but is still not right.

I have a pair of giant candle sticks...they each need five candles
so that is 10 altogether
I always get hugely indignant at spending £30 on candles, when they are £3 a pack of two.
My bad maths is £3 x 10, when in reality it is £3x5 (cos of the pack of two thing)
I did Advanced Maths at school too, so really am not that dim. Hmm

Serialweightwatcher · 04/12/2016 10:33

I am rubbish at maths, so when it's a percentage I do the easy option of what would be 10% and then if it's 30% I times that by 3 (eg: 10% of 60 is 6 and 3 x 6 = 18) ... that's how I have always got by in shops Smile
