Original film performance here:

Original lyrics:

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)

This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)

My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)

So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)

The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)

I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)

I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)

I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)
But baby, it's cold outside

I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)

Your welcome has been (how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)

My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)

My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)

I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)
Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)

You've really been grand (I thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)

There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pnuemonia and died)

I really can't stay (get over that old out)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside

The version they've done is far creepier than the original. The guy singing the new version sounds horrible

lizzieoak · 05/12/2016 22:45

It does sound like he can't wait to get rid of her. I love the Tom Jones-Cerys Williams version, it's very burlesque-ish.

BottleBeach · 05/12/2016 23:34

Meh. Too earnest. I like this version m.youtube.com/watch?v=7WD8KktdHic

Love the dingo line, Bottle!

JPinkertonSnoopington · 06/12/2016 00:53

Absolutely pissing myself laughing – " my father will be drunk on the floor" this is brilliant – love it!

JPinkertonSnoopington · 06/12/2016 00:58

I had to listen again to get the dingo reference well worth it!

KittyWindbag · 06/12/2016 01:57

I'm pretty right in about consent issues but I've seen this doing the rounds on Facebook and it does irk me.

There's nothing wrong with the original, is there? It just sounds like two people who want to stay together trying to navigate their own feelings and societal pressures on unmarried women. Even typing that I feel silly because it's a bloody light hearted Christmas song.

JPinkertonSnoopington · 06/12/2016 02:38

Gawd! Just had a horrible thought. Please god don't let them get their hands on the recordings of Bessie Smith when in sombre mood. There would be no need to alter her later staff because it is all woman defeats man and walks away from him and his demands for money.

"You come in rollinv drunk
" Smelling like you've been with some old skunk
Take it right back to the place where you got it
'cause I don't want a bit of it round here"

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/12/2016 02:44

Like it or don't. Whatever. There's no 'we' here. Lots of individuals with minds & thoughts of their own.

steff13 · 06/12/2016 03:34

I like when Blaine and Kurt sang it on Glee. :) And also the She and Him version, where Zooey Deschanel sings the traditionally male part.

Indeed, LadyJane. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion – but not to their own facts. The new lyric is risible, ham-fisted and misguided and an insult to both the intelligence and to Frank Loesser.

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/12/2016 18:36

JPinkerton Grin Grin Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 12/12/2016 18:43

OP. I think the lyrics of the original read as if they both want her to stay but she is worried about what people will think.

I've never seen the film clip but having now watched it the bloke is horrible- he looks a real pest, pawing her and holding her back.

JPinkertonSnoopington · 13/12/2016 15:17

I agree, lasts and am inclined to think that Frank Loesser had no say over how the script was enacted. That scene is contrary to the spirit of the song which we have all discussed above.

JPinkertonSnoopington · 13/12/2016 15:19

*Lass! (Bloody speech to text strikes again!)

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/12/2016 15:29

How about the cheese factory? is one of my favourite lines in the new version Grin. That's pure poetry..Grin
