i'm sure someone I know said to me the other day that she doesn't use any nappy cream

do any of you do this? Am thinking of not using it on my daughter (nearly 1 year old) but I don't want to risk her getting sore. She has very, very mild eczema (as in occasional slightly dry skin, it was worse when she was younger and diagnosed as eczema). Could do without wasting yet more money but babba's comfort comes first

I only use it when his bum is sore - isn't that what you're meant to do?
Do you put it on at every nappy change?

Batsh1tcrazy · 01/12/2016 00:06

I only use sudocream if my baby has nappy rash if she doesn't her bun is cleaned and nappy on no cream. Done this with my two older girls too. Are you supposed to put it on after every nappy?

angryangryyoungwoman · 01/12/2016 00:07

I never used it. She never had nappy rash either. Don't know if it's related.
Gritting my teeth slightly at the use of "babba" though, sorry!

Magstermay · 01/12/2016 00:07

I only put it on if sore - very rarely use it. I don't use wipes unless it's a poopy nappy either, saves a small fortune and their skin is better for it.

GreatFuckability · 01/12/2016 00:08

I bought one massive tub of sudocrem in 2003 and it lasted me about 5 years (3 kids in that time). I used a bit if they looked red the rest if the time no. None of my kids ever had bad nappy rash other than when ds had chicken pox.

Patriciathestripper1 · 01/12/2016 00:08

I never used anything, no cream no talc (read a review of talc 25 years ago that said it was found in some cancers in the body)
Just changed nappy often and used pure water baby wipes. Never had s problem.
less is more.

Graphista · 01/12/2016 00:08

There are alternatives and in my dds case the sudocrem made her eczema worse.

Calendula cream, aloe gel, some people just use olive oil.

FATEdestiny · 01/12/2016 00:08

I only use it when baby is sore. It hardly ever gets used.

One tube has lasted me newborn to toilet trained for each of my children. In fact there's usually loads left in the tube by the time child is toilet trained.

MissVictoria · 01/12/2016 00:10

I had to buy some for myself earlier this year (turns out it was actually thrush infection of the skin not just a sweat rash so it didn't help) And boy did half of them burn me! Tesco's own nappy cream is bloody awful, sudocrem didn't help, i end up going to savlon.

PickAChew · 01/12/2016 00:10

I've only ever used it after a poo or on sore skin. It' a barrier cream, rather than healing (or otherwise)

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 01/12/2016 00:11

I've only ever used sudocrem when my DC had nappy rash i.e. once or twice each from 0-2.

Slapping antiseptic cream on a healthy baby bum seems bonkers to me.

gnashereNameChange · 01/12/2016 00:11

I used the tiniest blob of Metanium of mine were sore and it worked like a treat. Strange stuff but works miracles!

newmumwithquestions · 01/12/2016 00:13

I only use if sore - maybe every couple of months. I assume you're putting a kind of barrier cream on? Dd1 is 2 now but I stopped when she was about 1, she has sensitive skin (nothing major but gir example gets sore if I use wipes any more than occasionally - I only ususlly use cotton wool) with Dd2 I stopped much earlier (3 months?) but she's got less sensitive skin.

Just try it, if anything happens go back to what you were doing.

luckystarannoyingbra · 01/12/2016 00:13

i'm talking about barrier cream, ie Bepanthen. Sudocrem is a healing cream with potent active ingredients and not to be used unless the baby already has nappy rash, according to my health visitor.

wow mags, that's interesting about the wipes, I have been trying to use reusable wipes but come to think of it, i'm using them to wipe off the residue of cream!

i'd be interested to hear more experiences too :-)

And sorry about typos

LittleBearPad · 01/12/2016 00:17

Use only if DC have nappy rash when I use metanium.

BigGreenOlives · 01/12/2016 00:17

Only ever used creams if there was an existing problem. Didn't use wipes until babies were quite old as had been told not to by ante natal class.

NoCapes · 01/12/2016 00:17

You really don't need a barrier cream
I've had 3 babies, never used one and they all have perfectly healthy bums

mrscarrotironfoundersson · 01/12/2016 00:18

Why don't you try it yourself one week/month with, one week/month without? If you're going to try and listen to advice from your friend, HV AND Mumsnet you're going to end up very confused!

likepeasandcarrots · 01/12/2016 00:18

With my son we used Vaseline as a barrier cream, but just a very thin layer or you can stop the nappies absorbing the wees. On the odd occasion his bum was sore we used Sudocrem but it was very rare we needed it.

Inthenick · 01/12/2016 00:22

I never used it on two of mine. And the other permanently has a red raw bum no matter how much I use:(

Eeeek686 · 01/12/2016 00:25

Mine have only had sudocrem used on them once or twice each and DD is now in pants and DS nearly 2... never ever used a barrier cream, never even crossed my mind?! Think the idea is a hangover from the old days before nappies got so good at wicking any moisture away from baby's skin. Almost superfluous now I would think in all but the most sensitive of bums? Fwiw when Dd had a spot of eczema when v.tiny a spot of coconut oil massaged into the areas affected cleared it up super-quick... maybe worth a try instead of bepanthen et all?! Plus it's anti bacterial, anti viral, and makes DC smell macaroons... bonus!! Grin

Doesn't need removing with word after either? Confused another handy hint: by water wipes or Reese&jackson wipes in bulk when on special - they are waaaay better for baby butts!

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 01/12/2016 00:28

6 babies and only used it when they had sore bums. 5 were generally ok, 1 had a raw bum for about 3 months when she started walking so we used aloe (and I'm sure something else) gel which cleared it up well.

itsalldyingout · 01/12/2016 00:29

We used to use baby wipes and Sudocrem on my aunt's "nappy" rash, but she complained about intense stinging and burning with both.

We now use Andrex type wet-wipes and either Vaseline or Boot's Zinc & Castor Oil Cream. She says this regime is cooling and comfortable.

As babies can't talk I'm rather glad I used a clean, damp washcloth and Z&C or Vaseline on my daughter when she was a baby now.

MollyRedskirts · 01/12/2016 00:31

I use Metanium for healing a rash, but I don't use a barrier cream. There doesn't seem to be a need for it with DS2. He only gets a rash when he poos more frequently than usual. I have tried using barrier creams on those days (if he does two poos before noon, I know I'm in for a poopy day!) but they don't make any difference.
