i'm sure someone I know said to me the other day that she doesn't use any nappy cream

do any of you do this? Am thinking of not using it on my daughter (nearly 1 year old) but I don't want to risk her getting sore. She has very, very mild eczema (as in occasional slightly dry skin, it was worse when she was younger and diagnosed as eczema). Could do without wasting yet more money but babba's comfort comes first

No barrier cream here, but I use cloth nappies and cream just soaks in to them and reduces the absorbency. I only every use cloth wipes with water too (for cost and environment not PFB). DS has had a tiny bit of nappy rash on the odd occasion he's been teething and I've used a healing cream at that time but it was only a tiny bit of nappy rash.

I don't see the point in barrier cream.

LuckySantangelo1 · 01/12/2016 07:58

I have a 18 month old. I use cheeky wipes and that's it. He's had a sore bottom about twice and then I've used metanium sparingly. The midwives when he was born said not too and that creams etc just hamper nappy absorbency.

lilyb84 · 01/12/2016 08:34

Never used it here, have just treated one occasion of sore bum with Sudocrem. I suspect our childminder uses it though as I usually find residue when changing ds in the evening.

honkinghaddock · 01/12/2016 08:48

Ds is older and still in nappies. We used sudocrem every nappy change till he was about one but since then have only used it if he was sore eg during a d and v infection. We have always used baby wipes. He has never had nappy rash without an obvious reason.

StarlingMurderation · 01/12/2016 09:01

If DS's bum looks a bit red, I use yellow Metanium. Otherwise, we don't use anything - just give it a good clean.

Abrahamkin · 01/12/2016 09:21

Didn't even know that barrier cream was a thing! Let alone used it (and DS is nearly 2yo!). I only used a healing cream if it looked sore, and that would be around once a month max, not most days.

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 01/12/2016 09:23

I only use metanium if they have nappy rash. Otherwise I don't use anything. If their skin is fine I don't put cream on it.

Heirhelp · 01/12/2016 09:28

There was a thread about this a couple of days ago. In the end a child minder came on and said different babies respond differently to different creams.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 01/12/2016 09:38

If you're using washable wipes and want a barrier cream, just use coconut oil. We use one from the grocery aisle and never had the slightest red bum. Not even when she cut two molars and an incisor in one night!
Cloth nappies can also help reduce incidents of nappy rash, and they've come a long way since the days of terry towels!

luckystarannoyingbra · 01/12/2016 22:49

just fyi, breastmilk is great for loads of things but not thrush (which is often mistaken for nappy rash) as it just feeds the fungus.
thanks for all the feedback, I don't think i'll have time to check this thread again, stopped using cream for 24 hours and ok so far
I thought weleda calendula was a barrier cream, didn't know you could use it instead of sudocrem!

Every change-wee and poo combined burns babies skin very quickly (and I change regularly because DD had bad nappy rash once and it was horrendous)-I do think every baby is different though.

Bellaposy · 01/12/2016 22:57

The advice these days is NOT to use nappy cream unless needed. So your friend would BU to be using it, not the other way round. My 6 month old has never had nappy cream and never had nappy rash!

Crunchymum · 01/12/2016 22:57

Used sudocreme every change with DC, but it started to dry into their skin creases Shock

Use it is DC2 has a red bum - which is rarely.

Neither child has suffered from nappy rash though!!!

Farmmummy · 01/12/2016 23:01

Egg whites worked well when all else failed here with dd2 never had any problems with her or dd1 then she got a really raw bum and Sudocrem etc wasn't helping egg whites cleared it in 24 hours

havalina1 · 01/12/2016 23:06

You're not meant to use it every nappy change. With disposable nappies at least, they draw the wet away and the surface of the nappy should still be dry to touch. If you put cream on you're blocking the nappy being effective as it rubs off onto the nappy anyway and stops it doing it's job.

I only use it if they are sore. Sudocreme isn't potent? It's mild stuff. But I use weleda's calendula cream, I've three tubes on the go, one in a nappy bag, one in a nursery bag and one at the charge table. We've never finished a tube ( and have two children 3 & 1).

Grilledaubergines · 01/12/2016 23:11

I never used it with DC. I left the nappy off as much as I could to lessen moisture, not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Rattusn · 01/12/2016 23:14

I only use a tiny amount of metanium when there is a rash.

We use cloth nappies and wipes (just water and flannel, no chemicals). My dd rarely has rash. I work very long hours too, and it is most definitely possible to cloth nappy and work!

There are cloth friendly barrier creams ed coconut oil/wait rose cream, but they are generally not necessary.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/12/2016 23:14

I rarely used Sudocrem with either of my DD. Occasionally I used it when they are sore. I've had years of nappies (1 in nappies for 3.4 years, the other 2.10 and still in nappies!) and probably on my second pot. They weren't prone to soreness though.

baconandeggies · 01/12/2016 23:36

We didn't use any nappy cream whatsoever and DD was in Tesco / Sainsburys nappies until 3yrs+

Barrier creams are useless whatever the nappy, as they just paint the inside of the nappy and trap the wee / poo neat against the skin. Marketing ploy.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 02/12/2016 00:32

DD is out of nappies but I only ever used if her bum looked red. I've seen people slap half a tub of the stuff on their children after every single nappy whether they're red or not and find it bizarre!
