Baby fell off the bed - should I be worried?

So.... I go off to work this morning and leave my husband in our bed with the baby (I do her morning feed in bed with us before I go off to work). He sheepishly admits this evening that he 'might have fallen asleep' and was awoken to the sound of her hitting the floor!

The mattress is probably between 1 and 2 feet from the floor, and she fell onto carpet. He said she cried for 30 seconds and then was fine. Has been fine all day

There are no marks on her and I will keep an eye on her, of course

Just want to know that this has happened to other people and hear some reassuring stories that she will be fine!! Feel terrible even though I wasn't there. Gone out today and bought a bed guard - didn't realise she was as mobile as this, she wasn't even near the edge of the bed!

Mine both did it too. I was more upset than they were.

Olympiathequeen · 30/11/2016 20:09

Really common. I doubt many babies have not fallen of a bed or sofa.

thelostboy · 30/11/2016 20:09

Both of mine have fallen off beds and settees. My eldest bounced down the stairs once, top to bottom. He was fine, I was a gibbering apologetic wreck for days afterwards.

FloofyDoof · 30/11/2016 20:10

Mine both fell off beds when they were babies. Terrified me, they barely noticed. It didn't seem to do any lasting damage, they're bloody huge lovely teenagers now.

Kmxxx14 · 30/11/2016 20:10

My son fell off the bed as did my nephew. I have a 2 month old & expect to happen at some point.

BossWitch · 30/11/2016 20:11

Bed and sofa. Wooden floors both times. All fine, I nearly shat myself in terror though.

ISaySteadyOn · 30/11/2016 20:13

All mine did and I don't think I know of any babies that haven't. If I did, I'd think that was odd. Smile

Greengoddess12 · 30/11/2016 20:14

Yes quite reassuring as all 4 of mine fell of the bed and sofa.

I fell down the stairs with ds2 and he bounced down. Dd4 fell off mils coffee table.

Apart from that great parenting.

Don't worry op they are tough Grin

Namejustfornappies · 30/11/2016 20:15

None of mine have EVER fallen off the bed! Such terrible parenting Shock

All mine fell off the sofa GrinGrin

XDP was useless at keeping DS safe - he fell off 2 beds, the sofa, down the stairs, lost a fingernail and got bitten by a dog on his watch.

DS is a sturdy 9 year old now. Your DC will be fine. I saw a family member accidentally (and unknowingly) twat their child on the head the other week. Said baby is absolutely fine.

ElphabaTheGreen · 30/11/2016 20:20

Two more babies here who fell off the bed with no ill effects. DS2 went on to do a fucking Olympic cartwheel (unintentionally - I think gravity just reversed itself momentarily) off a sofa when he was one and landed on his head. Shan't be mentioning it at his two year review tomorrow Grin

OhSoggyBiscuit · 30/11/2016 20:20

My Mum says I fell downstairs as a baby once! Shock No wonder I had a childhood fear of stairs!! I was fine.

rogertherabbit · 30/11/2016 21:12

Thanks all, it's reassuring to know it happens to lots of people and that your babies are all fine! She is 7 months, so definitely starting to move. Neither of us would usually leave her unattended on the bed for more than a few seconds, but I guess DH did this one unintentionally..... ('resting his eyes', all that shit)

Falling off a sofa, bed or changing mat is a rite of passage. Bonus points if you whack their heads on the door frame as you walk through.

I know it feels horrible though. Flowers

abigwideworld · 30/11/2016 21:37

Mine did this last week. He was absolutely fine

ConfusedRabbit · 30/11/2016 21:41

Ex DP sat on DS.

This made me howl - hope poor DS was ok!

glueandstick · 30/11/2016 21:43

Been there. Done that. Had to get a friend over as I was so distraught. After two mins of crying my daughter didn't even notice. Has a cracker of a bruise for a couple of days.

Always find it amusing that if they go to sleep straight away or seem sleepy you should seek help. Most falls and bumps seem to happen because they are tired and lose balance!

Brummiegirl15 · 30/11/2016 21:44

My 11 month old DD did it last week and she can't even crawl or roll yet so no idea how she got from middle of bed to fall off it!

MavolioBent · 30/11/2016 21:44

Another one here with 4 dc who have all done this as babies. All fine. Yours will be too Smile

Temporaryname137 · 30/11/2016 22:01

Yep - we got to 14 months before the inevitable happened! She landed on the velvet throw and was thoroughly pissed off.

If your DD is herself, you've got nothing to worry about. They are wiggly wriggly little beasts :)

Temporaryname137 · 30/11/2016 22:03

Oh and my friend's DS crawled straight over the step from their dining room to kitchen and landed on his head. He's totally fine!

MyKidsHaveTakenMySanity · 30/11/2016 22:21

My firstborn did it too. I called the doctor in a panic because she was really sleepy after and he said it was totally fine. He told me that after a little shock like that many babies will "reboot" by going to sleep and waking up all refreshed. Obviously, it's worth getting your own doctor's opinion on every case if they get all sleepy and cause you worry.

Sandybum · 30/11/2016 22:34

Mine fell off the bed at around the same age. I had turned my back for a millisecond and turned back to see him falling head first towards the floor in slow motion. I called nhs direct in a panic and they told me to watch him for 24 hours for signs of concussion and prod him every 2 through the night to check he was responsive. He was absolutely fine even though I was wracked wih guilt!

Shakirasma · 30/11/2016 22:52

One of my friend's babies fell off the hospital bed on the postnatal ward! Who even knew that newborns could roll?

By a miracle she fell straight into my friends suitcase which was lying open at the side of the bed. Baby didn't even cry!

BlackeyedSusan · 30/11/2016 22:59

falling off the bed in the postnatal ward is very advanced parenting fail

banging heads off door frames and car door frames seems to be a common occurance too.

I do not recomend shutting their fingers inthe top of the car boot though.
