I wouldn't leave it on, dogs should be ok we have woken up and it's been -1 in the bedroom with ice on the inside of the windows. Dogs were and are fine......they are huskies though.

singleandfabulous · 30/11/2016 15:13

windows open, heating off
When it's -8?
Are you Royal/aristocracy?

Grin I chuckled at this!

I sometimes leave my heating on overnight but very very low thermostat setting (+17) if it's below freezing outside. It has frostguard so nothing to do with pipes. I just like it when the floors are lovely and toasty in the kitchen and bathroom. I know, I should wear slippers but I can't abide them.

If I don't leave the heating on then the cat jumps on the bed in the middle of the night to find a toasty spot, waking me up in the process while she kneeds for Britain. I'd rather have a quiet night's sleep and leave the heating on.

singleandfabulous · 30/11/2016 15:14

kneads obvs.

FlowerFairiee
That's the kind of thing I'd do. Bless you.

My house is always 21 degrees throughout (well according to the thermostats) - I like a warm house 24/7

expatinscotland · 30/11/2016 15:35

I leave our oil filled space heaters on all night, on low.

^^ thats so sweet, I had cat who had to live in outhouse too, but was a little better than yours from sounds of it - but I used to create wonderful cat boxes for her, lined with wool, egg boxes etc and put warm hottie in there in winter. Smile

I dont get these threads. My heating is always "on" but we use the thermostatic timer so daytime temp is 20 deg and nighttime temp 16deg. This means if its not cold your heating will be off, and if its very cold your heating will come on just enough to take the chill off the air.

You can add these controllers to most central heating systems.

Btw, even with my heating "on" 24 hours a day so we are never cold, because it is thermostatically controlled my monthly gas/elec bill combined is only £110 in an old 3 bed house.

lesleylogan89 · 30/11/2016 18:41

Mine is always on at this time of the year as I am always cold at the best of times.

previously1474907171 · 30/11/2016 19:20

I changed ours so it goes off much later and it comes on early anyway.

Thermostat is usually at 15 but when it is cold I set it at 15, however we have a random selection of thermostats on radiators so some rooms are hot and some are not.

bertsdinner · 30/11/2016 20:24

I wouldnt personally leave it on at night, I'm in bed and the cat has his cosy basket and his fur coat. I may leave it on low ( 14/15 or lower), if it was going to be very cold, as I do worry about pipes freezing.

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 30/11/2016 21:12

Ok I'm wondering if I am totally crazy. I have mine on 28 in the living room (still feel freezing right now and about to get a blanket - if I turn it off it gets colder so it must be working) and 24 in the bedrooms and it's been on 24/7 for over a month now.
My flat is tiny and has solar panels so it doesn't cost a huge amount so I'm lucky with that. I can't bear to be inside and cold.

PigletJohn · 30/11/2016 21:16

have you got a thermometer? It would be interesting to know if the actual room temp is 28.

NoahVale · 30/11/2016 22:54

i could wear lots of jumpers but then i would still get a cold nose, i hate having a cold nose and i am not wearing a hat indoors.

Elphame · 30/11/2016 23:03

Mine will probably be on all night tonight. It's really cold and I do feel sorry for the cat (currently asleep on a cushion in front of the fire..... ) Actually its the SO who is the soft touch when it comes to the cat but I pay the gas bill!

CointreauVersial · 30/11/2016 23:47

Bagel - oh yes, our loft bedroom is toasty warm......in the summer. Hmm In fact it's roasting on a hot summer night. But in the winter, not so much.

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding insulation. Whoever converted our loft didn't bother with any.

I've been asking about heating in Chat - keeping it on overnight to prevent burst pipes - but this looks like a better thread, with so many people on it.

Roussette, we would prefer to do things the same way you do, mostly wearing warm clothes, just switching the heating on occasionally as desired.

But having left it to switch on overnight if outdoor temps are forecast to be near freezing (usually setting thermostat 8-10) is annoying in the waste of oil and the noise. The aim is to prevent burst pipes, similar to what PigletJohn is saying. A lot of people say they don't put their heating on at night at all, however and they seem to be fine.

It does sound as if the property is draughty compared to many of your houses - however to me it feels average. As we expect to be moving out in a few months doing a lot of work on it isn't on the cards.

ihatetosay · 01/12/2016 09:24

turn heating off but take dog to bed that way you are both toasty

Jacquinta · 01/12/2016 09:47

I'd love to keep my heating on low all the time, but my boiler/water tank is next to my bedroom and clicks/makes noises when it's running. I can't sleep with any noise like that.
