Would you leave your heating if that cold?

Mine is on low overnight- about 15 degrees. Whoever gets up first (DH) turns it up to normal.

WorraLiberty · 29/11/2016 23:17

Mine is on 19 or 20 during the day/evening.

When I go to bed, I pop it on 10 but it rarely needs to come on. It did last night though.

There's no point in me trying to get to grips with the timer because DH works different shifts and we don't know where the override button is Blush

JellyBelli · 29/11/2016 23:20

We try to leave it on round the clock and turn the thermostat down to 16 at night. But when we have a Ddog, they have a sheepskin and an igloo to keep warm in winter.

Biffsboys · 29/11/2016 23:21

I sleep with the window open no matter how cold it gets ( much to my dh annoyance ! ) I turn the heating down to 15 and to come on at 6am .

Floralnomad · 29/11/2016 23:21

My heating is on 24/7 , overnight the thermostat is set at 19 , because the house stays warm it very rarely stays on overnight but it does come on every now and then .

musicposy · 29/11/2016 23:22

I can't bear it too hot at night but when it's really cold like this I put it to constant and turn the thermostat down to around 14. The only downside is that it doesn't go above that until I get out of bed and turn it up!

MingeFog · 29/11/2016 23:25

Can I ask Floral does that have a big impact on your heating bill? Asking because I get terrible neck pains in winter because of the air cooling rapidly in my bedroom (they last all day and affect what I can do physically - couldn't lift shopping bags earlier) and have been debating leaving the heating on overnight, at a lower temperature (16-17?).

FlowerFairiee · 29/11/2016 23:25

You've reminded me of something. When I was a child, we had a lovely ginger cat, who my parents wouldn't allow in the house at night, even in winter and he had to sleep in the outhouse just off the kitchen which was freezing, as cold as outside in fact (there was a cat flap to get outside, so he wasn't trapped in there but the outhouse was marginally better because at least he had a bed). Luckily for him I used to sneak downstairs after my parents had gone to bed and sneak him in my bedroom then put him back in the outhouse in the morning before they woke up. I feel terrible that they did this to him...

acornsandnuts · 29/11/2016 23:25

I hate being cold but never put the heating on during the night. Dogs sleep in the utility which is colder that the house but have warm bedding and ask to go in so I assume they are happy in there.

Liiinoo · 29/11/2016 23:28

We live in SE UK so about -2 last night and I was still so hot I went to bed with the window wide open. DH shut it when he came up. No matter how cold it is I always need a bit of fresh air and could never sleep in a centrally heated room. If it is really, really cold I layer up pjs and duvets, but I still need a through draught to sleep well and find overnight heating too drying. (I am willing to accept that if I lived further north I might change my stance on that).

I take OPs comments re keeping the dogs warm. Our last pet was PTS last week and we always used to chuck an extra couple of logs on the fire at bedtime or, if we hadn't lit the stove we would leave the airing cupboard open for their comfort and convenience. But

SinglePringle · 29/11/2016 23:28

Hedda, well, one doesn't like to brag...!

I live in a very cold part of the UK and yup, window open and heating off every night. I've a seriously good duvet with a cotton sheet under it (always thought a throw on top was best but bedding lady at the shop said you crush the feathers and a thick cotton sheet under was better). Pj bottoms and a silk thermal vest and I sleep the sleep of the dead!

SouthofMaui · 29/11/2016 23:29

I put a blanket on the dog, he seems happy enough.

The heating is on 24/7 on low, but I find it easier to keep constant temperatures with young children. If not, they are too hot in the evening, then they get chilly early morning.

Nicnak2223 · 29/11/2016 23:31

I am, turned down but still on all night. Your house your call. I've only gotten away with it since ds. As dh used to turn off at any opportunity before.

Floralnomad · 29/11/2016 23:32

I actually don't think it affects the bills at all , I'm in most days except for a few hours and I think it costs as much to heat the house from cold than to just keep it at a nice level .

Notcontent · 29/11/2016 23:33

If you have a thermostat then you don't need to turn it off - just turn it down. Mine germs turned down to 18 at night and when I go out. Otherwise it's set to 20 or 21 if I am feeling cold.

MingeFog · 29/11/2016 23:38

Thanks Floral, I want to try it for a month and see how it goes Smile

Kel1234 · 29/11/2016 23:41

I would if dh wouldn't mind. Dh and ds are both always warm. I'm always freezing.

grumpysquash3 · 29/11/2016 23:53

I am leaving ours on. I just hate the cold first thing in the morning. I guess it might cost an extra £1, I think it's worth it.

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 30/11/2016 00:09

Gosh, i appear to like sub tropical climes in our house. Currently have the heating on at 21 overnight and have a 14 tog feather duvet!!

RubbishMantra · 30/11/2016 00:15

I'm a bit of a hot-bod, always have been, especially now (perimenopause) so couldn't sleep with the heating on. I also have my bedroom window open all the time. Couldn't sleep otherwise, and if I did, I'd wake up all snuffy in the morning.

OP, have you considered self heating pads for your dogs' beds?

Grilledaubergines · 30/11/2016 00:15

I feel hot reading these posts. Heating off, window open, 10 tog duvet. That's lovely and warm for me. I hate waking up hot and fuzzy-headed in the morning which is what happens if the heating gets left on by mistake.

Redglitter · 30/11/2016 00:20

Heating off. Window open. 3 tog duvet (my winter one) on. Heating on all night would kill me

Ludoole · 30/11/2016 00:20

Had my heating on day and night for the last week Blush

Fockers · 30/11/2016 07:29

Well I didn't leave it on & the house was 12 degrees when I got up! Dogs were fine...
I take the point about keeping the house constant but I like to be cool in bed normally. If it carries on ill turn my rad off I think

megletthesecond · 30/11/2016 07:33

Mine is on 20 overnight. Luckily I can afford it. Tried to sleep without it but I felt dreadful and kept waking up.
