To wonder why anyone would order from an Avon person?

Got a thing through 'orders collected Nov 27th for delivery Dec 16th'

Why would you wait 2 weeks when you can go online and get your items delivered within a couple of days? And you know if they are in stock or not immediately?

I don't get it :/

Because it's just as convenient as going online.

I use Avon makeup because it dies trigger my skin. The rep is great at letting me know when special offers are going to be on for items I like. She delivers when it's convenient.

My rep is now the teenage daughter of a friend and I like to put some orders her way. She's getting herself out and about to earn some money so why not help her out.

bloodyteenagers · 30/11/2016 01:16

Never had a freebie or discount for an Avon rep.
The price and offer in the books are the same as online.
Used to get discounts and freebies online but they've stopped doing that.

crazywriter · 30/11/2016 03:55

I bought through a friends DD to support her first step into work. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. I did manage to find most Christmas presents last year though and got it all delivered to me at a time that suited me.

TheDowagerCuntess · 30/11/2016 04:22

YANBU.

The vast majority of Avon purchases are pity purchases.

Scooby20 · 30/11/2016 05:31

I haven't bought from Avon for years. Until about 3 months ago. My teen has start being more interested in make up. It's cheap and I have bought small amounts from each magazine to put together for her for Christmas. As long as it came before Christmas, it's fine.

I quite enjoy sitting with a cuppa and flicking through it.

My Avon woman is someone who lives near by, I don't know her or pity her.

PoldarksBreeches · 30/11/2016 06:05

80% of the answers above are to do with the circumstances of the sellers. Interesting.

MardAsSnails · 30/11/2016 06:10

Because I'm overseas and they don't do delivery but via the Avon lady, and there's a couple of things I like

AuntieStella · 30/11/2016 06:29

I buy via MIL from the Avon Lady in her village.

I like proper catalogues (prefer to browsing online), and am not in a hurry for stuff to arrive. Also, don't have to deal with delivery companies!

Some of the stuff is very good indeed.

And it is a villager/community thing - people talking to each other and supporting her.

(Pity about the resumption of animal testing for Chinese sales)

tulippa · 30/11/2016 06:33

There seem to be a lot of posts where people are buying from Avon because they feel sorry for the rep's circumstances or want to spend money indulging a friend's hobby.

So Avon make their profit from the goodwill of people who pity their friends/neighbours rather than an effective supply/demand with good customer service business model?

JontyDoggle37 · 30/11/2016 06:38

Wooahh! (Is that how you spell it?) putting business someone's way isn't pity! If you make a pint of support in your local grocers or butchers that isn't pity, it's supporting your local community - same with your Avon lady. Mine is a friend, but I started getting it because I wanted to get better at doing makeup and they do lots of good products at very cheap rates so you can play around with new things without it costing the earth. Plus, they do dupes of all the very expensive perfumes for about £6/£7 each for a 50ml bottle - I never used to buy perfume but no I've got about six and wear different ones every day. Avon has encouraged me to experiment more, and I've also got some lovely spa-type gifts from them for Christmas too.

TheoriginalLEM · 30/11/2016 06:38

i miss the animal shaped perfume bottles and pomanders.

i love the pink bubble bath and the skin so soft is a great insect repellant

JontyDoggle37 · 30/11/2016 06:39

*point of supporting NOT pint of support 😳

sandgrown · 30/11/2016 06:39

I buy products that are on offer ( offers every month) for myself and for gifts for friends. Some of the products are very good.

Narnian · 30/11/2016 06:39

I've ordered online from Avon in the past. It took three weeks to arrive and then part of the order was missing.
I sold Avon myself a few years ago. A lot of people like their stuff. I stopped it though as Avon were buggers for chucking all of the orders into one delivery box so the 500ml shower gel crushed the boxes of gift items, other items wouldn't be sent and it took ages on the phone to sort it out. Terrible experience.

AuntieStella · 30/11/2016 06:41

No, it's not pity purchasing.

And I'm absolutely fine with the time for order dispatch. There's no particular merit in next day delivery, and not everyone needs/values that.

I've found customer service to be great, because the rep does it all for you. (Of course, the character and experience of your rep must make a difference to that, just as it can for any seller. MIL's is great.)

pklme · 30/11/2016 06:44

Lots of people order from people they know, or get to know, because that is the business model. I buy because I like the product, I buy from my friend because she tells me if particular things are on offer. The magazine is easier to flick through than the online shop. I have also ordered online and had it delivered by my friend.

I'm rarely in a hurry for what I buy- I have to be organised in advance of birthdays/Christmas, though.

user1477282676 · 30/11/2016 06:51

If they still sold those marvellous plastic ladies full of perfume I would buy from them! Also, those great soaps with pictures on them. :D

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2016 06:52

It does seem like a lot of people are ordering from the Avon lady because they feel sorry for them. Sad

Does the also apply to Betterware?

BusterGonad · 30/11/2016 07:12

I really love looking through an Avon book, it's so so relaxing. I'd rather order through the Avon lady as I love the old schoolness of it. They have great bargains and deals. I think people like Avon ladies because you pay in cash (or cheque?) so the older generation love it, it gets delivered to your door in person and not left with your neighbors or at a sorting office. It's usually someone local like a friend or neighbor so you feel you can trust them. If you have mobility issues you don't have to leave the house. You don't need a laptop or iPhone. It's just a great idea and I've always loved it. I hope it never disappears like a lot of other things.

confusedandemployed · 30/11/2016 07:17

I've ordered from the same Avon lady for over 5 years. I've had lots of freebies, loads of discounts (there's usually a sale catalogue as well as the main catalogue) and most of the stuff is great quality.

I've never even thought about the wait: it's just what happens if you get Avon.

squishee · 30/11/2016 07:23

YABU. Ask pensioners for example. Not everyone has the Internet, or can walk pain-free.

pinkieandperkie · 30/11/2016 07:28

My mum has an Avon lady. My neighbour became an Avon lady when she had her baby and would take the baby on her round with her.

OllyBJolly · 30/11/2016 07:29

It's social, not pity. I'd rather buy from someone knowing they get a cut of the proceeds, which they in turn will probably spend locally. And it is quite nice when the rep brings the parcels in and we compare and try each other's stuff.

It's actually cheaper to buy online via Quidco but that cuts out the social aspect altogether.

You can buy online from Boots and that helps put retail staff out of work and contributes to a business that is exploiting sick people and putting staff under pressure to act against their professional ethics www.theguardian.com/business/2016/apr/17/yours-a-stressed-pharmacist-boots-article-prompts-flood-of-letters The profits go mainly to tax exiles. Shopping in store does help keep some more people in work.

BusterGonad · 30/11/2016 07:29

My parents are in their 70s, they have never ordered anything with there debit card details, they do not even know if they have the Internet at home or not! They do as I checked my wifi at theirs! Not all of the older or younger generation are happy using there card details on line. I do it but I still sometimes worry, especially if my laptop gets a virus alert!!!

Ditsy4 · 30/11/2016 07:49

I don't do it now but have supported people here and my last village by buying.
Ah Little Peach I remember it well and at Christmas time lovely bottles with bubble bath. I think I remember Cinderella or Bel in her gown. My kids thought the bubble bath went on forever but I used to top it upGrin
When we lived in Scotland 30 years ago there was also Tupperware, Pippa Dee and Dee minor we were always having parties to support people(SAHM) and it was a social thing. Woe betide the dad that wouldn't watch the kids that night!
As another poster said " It might be the only person that the purchaser sees all day / all week!
