To be concerned that DD needs bigger knickers

DD (4.7yrs) has always been a different shape to DS (6.5yrs). He lost his toddler chubbiness fairly quickly and is now fairly slim, whereas she's a lot more solid looking. Today she was complaining that her knickers are going up her bum. I had noticed this and was thinking that she needed a bigger size. Problem is that the ones she is in are size 5-6yrs so she would be wearing size 6-7yrs and she isn't yet 5!! AIBU to be a bit concerned about this: her diet is fairly healthy, I don't feed her junk or anything. She has always eaten more than DS because she likes more foods, whereas he's quite fussy.

Another vote for the little shorts style ones, much less likely to ride up and cause discomfort - different style might work better than ever larger size? We also got a swimsuit in M+ S with the shorts style legholes - it hardly loooks any different and never rides into her rump!

Imsickofnamechanging · 28/11/2016 21:11

2Kids Loving the sound of your multipurpose knickers Grin they should do more of them.

IAmNotACat · 28/11/2016 21:21

When I was a kid I wore clothes older than my age alll the time because I have always been tall. The age thing is just a guideline. Buy what fits.

unlucky83 · 28/11/2016 21:25

Another saying ignore the clothes sizes as long as the BMI is fine/child is in proportion. They vary so much (as do children - look at your DDs class and they will be all sizes - taller, skinnier etc) even in the same shop - worse my DD liked a certain style of knickers from ASDA ...she was 8 and wearing size 7-8. They were getting a bit small so I bought the exactly the same style size 8-9 they were smaller than the 7-8 ones! - she ended up with the 9-10s. She is now 9.5 and was wearing 10-11s...she decided she wanted a change of style (to more short like ones) - in ASDA as well I bought 10-11s and they buried her...have had to put them away until she is older and get the 9-10s and they are slightly too big Hmm.

(actually she has another style as well - currently in her pant drawer she has sizes 8-9s, 9-10s and 10-11s and all an ok fit!!!)

allthatnonsense · 28/11/2016 21:29

My 7 year old is in 9-10. She's very average in size.

Backingvocals · 28/11/2016 21:32

I've noticed that DD's knickers (she's 10) are smaller than her brother's (he's 7). They are both wearing the size for their age but girls' knickers are cut skimpily whereas his are properly bum-covering. I'm going to start getting her boy-cut shorts or a bigger size. Another stupid thing about things for girls.

Galena · 28/11/2016 21:36

DD had some shorts style knickers and had a constant wedgie.

BreakfastLunchPasta · 28/11/2016 21:41

I've always found I have to size up for my dds for knickers, tights and swimsuits in most brands. Dd1 was verging on underweight until her teens but I still had to size up.

TheWoodlander · 28/11/2016 21:44

Try Next - these ones or these

My DD will be 9 in December, I ordered the age 7-8 and they are massive. DD is little, but they are ridiculous. She moans they "fall off her".

TheWoodlander · 28/11/2016 21:45

ps - Avoid John Lewis - bought some in there, and they were tiny Smile

Dizzybintess · 28/11/2016 21:47

kids seem to come in all shapes and sizes MY DD is age 5 and is almost in 6-7 clothing for the height however she still has age 2-3 knickers in her drawer that fit her. her butt is literally non existent. she hates wearing jeans as they sag on her bottom.

deadringer · 28/11/2016 21:49

Sizes don't mean much ime. My dd is almost 8 and she can fit into age 3 pants, and she eats like a bloody horse!

YouSunkMyBattleship · 28/11/2016 21:50

My daughter is 10 and wears age 5-6 knickers. They're all different. I see it as just as number so you know which are the next size up. The actual size is irrelevant.

MuddlingMackem · 28/11/2016 21:51

A few years ago we found that boys' briefs are actually a better fit on DD than girls' pants, they suit her shape better and have better bum coverage too. :)

TimTamTerrier · 28/11/2016 21:54

DD wears boys' trunks and finds them very comfy. They have much wider waistbands and good bum and top of leg coverage.

mygorgeousmilo · 28/11/2016 22:25

My kids have always worn a year or two ahead and are in no way fat. It's normal for most people I know too

sdaisy26 · 28/11/2016 22:35

I have a dd and ds quite close in age & have really noticed a difference between boys' & girls' pants.

The boys' ones are lovely thick cotton, generous size, plenty of bum coverage, while the girls' are much thinner & skimpier. Some of ds's age 2-3 pants are the same size as dd's 4-5 ones, from the same retailer. It's actually very disturbing when you think about it.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/11/2016 07:29

I generally never worry what the label says - they're your children and I'm sure you can judge better which size will fit with a personal approach. At best a label is just a guide.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 29/11/2016 07:34

eg. DS has always been a bit of a shorty so generally in size under trousers otherwise too long. He has a small bum too!

booellesmum · 29/11/2016 07:39

We gave up with knickers and just buy boxers - the H&M ones are lovely. A lot of little girls complain about knickers.

Goingtobeawesome · 29/11/2016 07:41

From tiny babies none of my children wore their age clothes and only one of the three do now.

It really does not matter. If you're feeding her too much crap then yes, you should be bothered about the size clothes she needs. Are you?

I'm pretty sure the measurements are years old and shouldn't be taking literally.

My 15.8 year old wears 17-18 years, men's clothes some in extra large to get the leg length in pyjamas and no way could you say he was slightly over weight. He's very tall and skinny.

Stop stressing.

AmIImaginingThis · 29/11/2016 07:47

Well your first concern is to buy clothes that fit her now so she isn't uncomfortable. Is she overweight? If so you can address this through diet and an active lifestyle.

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/11/2016 17:30

My 5 yo DS wears size 7-8 in all clothes. He's very tall but with quite a stocky body shape. He is not overweight. Sizes vary so much, I really don't care as long as it fits!

ReluctantFarmerJo · 29/11/2016 17:46

I look after 8 year old twins.... the boy is very tall for his age and in age 11-12 clothes, his sister is very slim and has some 5-6 clothes that still fit. Ignore the labels, they seem to be quite proud of the fact that they don't fit into their 'age-bracket'!

Pigeonpair1 · 29/11/2016 17:53

They shrink in the tumble dryer too......
