To be concerned that DD needs bigger knickers

DD (4.7yrs) has always been a different shape to DS (6.5yrs). He lost his toddler chubbiness fairly quickly and is now fairly slim, whereas she's a lot more solid looking. Today she was complaining that her knickers are going up her bum. I had noticed this and was thinking that she needed a bigger size. Problem is that the ones she is in are size 5-6yrs so she would be wearing size 6-7yrs and she isn't yet 5!! AIBU to be a bit concerned about this: her diet is fairly healthy, I don't feed her junk or anything. She has always eaten more than DS because she likes more foods, whereas he's quite fussy.

My dd1 has always been in knickers (and everything else!) a couple of sizes bigger than her age...she's on the 98th centile for her height. Is your dad tall for her age too?

AllTheShoes · 28/11/2016 20:40

lobster I was on that other thread, too, and I think you're over-reacting. It's just knickers, we're all anonymous and nobody was thinking anything dodgy until you brought up the subject.

Wolfiefan · 28/11/2016 20:41

My DD wears clothes bigger than her age. She's active and eats ok.
My son was a chunky thing as a young toddler. He lost it as he got older. She's slower to thin out but it is happening. I wonder if girls are a different shape or just mine?!
Buy clothes that fit. Keep kids active and promote healthy eating. (Everything in moderation!)

anniroc · 28/11/2016 20:41

Thanks for your responses. Yes she is very tall - 90th centile or above. I will try shorts instead. Cherry - she definitely has a lot of junk in her trunk! Smile

My DD wears clothes 1 size up - she is as tall as an average child of one year older. So she is in proportion. Is your DD tall too?

lola111 · 28/11/2016 20:44

I would go by her BMI centile not by some random knicker size

BarbarianMum · 28/11/2016 20:44

Well there you go then. She's tall for her age and her bottom is in proportion to the rest of her. Smile

QuackDuckQuack · 28/11/2016 20:44

X post. Where is her weight on the centile chart?

han01uk · 28/11/2016 20:45

My daughter has considerable junk in her trunk too...and has got curvy over the last year or so. She is 7 and a half and is in 9-10 knickers and 11-12 tights but is like a stick in all other respects. I wouldn't worry unless you think she is overweight, also different shops come up considerably different as I'm sure you know!

dalmatianmad · 28/11/2016 20:45

You've started a thread asking for advice on buying your dd some bigger pants? Seriously Confused just go and buy her some

Cagliostro · 28/11/2016 20:45

There is a huge variation in sizes though so shop around. I just ordered some for DD in the same age that she normally wears, but this was the difference (please excuse knicker photo!) which on a 9 year old is massive

TealGiraffe · 28/11/2016 20:46

My friends daughter is just 4 and wear clothes and knicks in age 5-6 (only know as i've bought her some disney knickers for xmas Grin)

I asked my friend what size to buy her and she said a size up 'so her arse doesnt eat them all' Grin i think knickers are quite small these days, i remember much bigger bum covering knickers when i was a girl!

RandomMess · 28/11/2016 20:47

Definitely more of an issue with the design of knickers!

We ended up getting H&M girl shorts very good quality and much comfier and lasted forever!!!

Cagliostro · 28/11/2016 20:47

And yes definitely shorty style ones, DD far prefers them. I've just discovered that M&S do lovely ones

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/11/2016 20:48

Caglio what brand are the knickers at the back? They look nice and big and comfy.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 28/11/2016 20:49

I've always been ample of arse, I find shorts style ones the least likely to fall foul of the dreaded 'hungry bum'

Cagliostro · 28/11/2016 20:49

they're M&Co here :) they are really nice! Would definitely be keeping them if sizing was right for DD

Cagliostro · 28/11/2016 20:50

(the ones at the front are BHS. Kind of annoyed I can't get more of them)

Although even there more traditional knickers seemed to be a better design.

Little girls tend to have a more rounded bum and tummy. It's because their hipster a slightly different shape, and their tummies are full of tiny ovaries and stuff that the boys don't have.

I don't know who sizes kid's clothes, but I always found that the "age" sizes were too big for DS and too small for DD.

2kids2dogsnosense · 28/11/2016 20:58

*hips are, not hipster

(Bloody hell, autocorrect - what have I ever done to you?)

Maryann1975 · 28/11/2016 20:58

Another vote for trying a different brand. Dd has the same age size pants from next and Tesco. The Tesco ones are tiny compared to the next ones. Similar style, but completly different in size.

2kids2dogsnosense · 28/11/2016 21:02

I'm just remembering my school knickers - thick navy cotton, absolutely massive with a handkerchief pocket in the waistband (!). There was about five yards of material in them. If the elastic in the leg snapped the knicker leg was about 3 feet wide and flapped about like a yacht sail in a gusty breeze.

No chance of them going up your bum!

Galena · 28/11/2016 21:02

Matalan! I've found Matalan knickers fit my DD well and she has quite a bum on her too.
