To get the dog to bite me so it will be pts?

Dog coming into my field and attacking my horses. One minor injury, several incidents of damage to the rugs (like little coats) they wear. Now a chunk out of one hind leg requiring vet attention. This dog has tasted blood, it will not stop here. We have beefed up the fencing as much as we can - rented land...

When I phoned the Police they were bloody useless. If we see it in action they will come but they will not take the dog as it is not a human it is attacking. And I can't legally hit/hurt it to get it off my horse.... So aibu to lie in wait for it then pull it off my horse so it gets me? Then it is a dangerous dog and has attacked a human, so the Police have to act.

Cannot see any other way to protect my horses :(.

And if the owner is reading this - STOP it! Put it on a lead!!!! It is not funny or clever to injure livestock.

I would capture the dog and release it 20 miles away.

krustykittens · 28/11/2016 17:38

MissVictoria, what about the animals being attacked? Four of our ponies belong to my children and they are their beloved pets and best friends, losing them as a result of injuries caused by a dog attack would devaste my kids and me. I love dogs too, I have my two of my own but I don't allow them to attack other people's pets and or damage othe people's livelihoods by killing their livestock. This dog seems to be roaming out of control and has attacked more than once. Yes, it's just doing what a dog does, but the OP does have a right to look after her animals. Why should they become a casualty to indulge a dog? Is it fair on the dog? No, but this is what happens when people are inclined to be anti-social and the consequences of the law are not severe enough to make them reign those anti-social tendencies in.

ChozzleopsTheThird · 28/11/2016 17:40

You indicate in the OP that you haven't actually seen the dog attack.

Something wrong with you if you want to provoke and animal so that you can get it put down.

JurassicFart · 28/11/2016 17:42

I was attacked by a dog a year ago. I have horrible scars and I wasn't able to work for two months. I still have some pain.

That was from an attack lasting about 20 seconds. If its owner hadn't have been nearby I would not have been able to fight it off.

The dog was not PTS, either. (long story).

So if you're serious OP, I hope you'll give this some serious thought!

Get a friendly farmer to shoot it? Then don't say anything. I am a dog-lover, our would never be allowed to do this, but I also own horses

Nuanna · 28/11/2016 17:58

the owners are at fault, not the dog

Why make an animal suffer unnecessarily when it's the owners that are letting it (and your horse) down? Bring down the law on the owners.

LovingLola · 28/11/2016 17:59

Can it be shot? Dogs worrying sheep can be shot so why not dogs attacking horses?

Janey50 · 28/11/2016 18:03

I was under the impression that it is an offence to let a dog worry or attack livestock, and that the farmer/owner was entitled to shoot a dog that was doing this?

MulberryBush12 · 28/11/2016 18:04

Not encountered the exact same scenario but similar and would advise you to go to see your MP. Mine was very good at communicating with the police etc.
Try to get some video evidence.
Don't entice the dog to bite you- Crazy idea-& likely the police would do nothing anyway, unless the owner consented to euthanasia.

OutragedKoala · 28/11/2016 18:05

Just kill the dog 🐶

Janey50 · 28/11/2016 18:05

Posted too soon. Or does that law only apply to sheep and cows, but not horses? Hmm

Anitee · 28/11/2016 18:06

I can understand your desperation - we had to have a pony put to sleep because a stupid dog owner would not stop her dog chasing the horses. The dog chased our pony into a fence which he tried to jump and went into a ditch breaking his leg. My husband is very clear now any dog chases our horses and he will shoot it - ironically as the horses now share fields with sheep people seem to be much more responsible.

OurBlanche · 28/11/2016 18:17

Yes... horses are livestock and grazing land counts as agricultural... so you can shoot a dog that is worrying, not biting, worrying your horses.

Having shouted at a feckless owner and pointed my shotgun at a dog that was joyfully bounding after some ewes I can confirm that some dog owners leap in front of a gun to protect their dogs Shock

So you may want to remember not to load yours... as I didn't, I was cleaning it at the time. That is bound to make the PCSO smile when he inspects your gun after 40 minutes of shouting from the 'aggrieved party'. Smile

But finding the owner and facebook shaming them is probably the way to go - initially!

WellErrr · 28/11/2016 18:20

Horses are NOT livestock.

myoriginal3 · 28/11/2016 18:33

Bloodstock if thoroughbred

myoriginal3 · 28/11/2016 18:36

Would firing a shot not unsettle the horses or are you considering an assassination of ddog off field

Nuanna · 28/11/2016 18:37

Horses are NOT livestock.

Unless they are the plough-pulling variety, or, they are kept to become horse meat.

IAmNotAMindReader · 28/11/2016 18:47

Solution seems to be to get some sheep as well. Then you have livestock in the field and can shoot the dog.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/11/2016 18:51

Mesh type electric fencing to keep it out.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/11/2016 18:53

Horses aren't livestock and grazing land isn't agricultural - you have to (or at least you should) apply for change of use if you want to graze horses on agricultural land.

midnightlurker · 28/11/2016 18:56

I really hope that one of the more 'oh poor dog just let it kill the horses' responses belongs to the owner in question. They might see sense and keep it away. The horses are MY pets and I love them very much. So do my children.

I now have local dog walker contacts offering to ID the dog. So I will lose a week's pay to wait out there by the entry point (in sub zero temperatures) and get a good picture. Plus it has already cost me a vets bill. So in real terms many hundreds of pounds and much distress to ponies and us, all because of an aggressive, dangerous family pet.

Hopefully once we have an ID then Facebook will do the rest. The Police certainly won't.

However, if Facebook doesn't work, perhaps we should borrow some sheep....

Midnightlurker, you have my sympathies. But please hassle the police because the Dangerous Dog Act should be protecting you and they should be doing domething about it.

krustykittens · 28/11/2016 19:15

urgh, something not domething!

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/11/2016 19:17

Shoot it and bury it

2kids2dogsnosense · 28/11/2016 20:04

Trying to provoke it into biting you so you can have it put to sleep is a cowardly and shitty thing to do.
Might be shitty - it's not cowardly. I wouldn't fancy risking it!

I think this is a measure of OP's desperation - the police really should have been prepared to step in before now.
