Went for a meal tonight nothing fancy just pizza and my friend seemed mortified that I didn't leave a tip. I was paying for our meal and I generally don't leave tips. Ive never left a tip for anyone actually not taxi drivers, hairdressers, waiters is that mean of me ?

Yes.

orangebird69 · 25/11/2016 22:40

Yes it is mean and YABU.

Paulat2112 · 25/11/2016 22:42

YANBU

Soubriquet · 25/11/2016 22:42

Depends what type of restaurant really.

I've never eaten in a posh restaurant that requires a tip

nurseinwonderland · 25/11/2016 22:42

I never tip. I find it strange that DH who is a delivery driver gets tips. And he tips the pizza delivery driver.
I'm planning on getting my hairdressers some chocolates when I go in Christmas eve but that's about it.

WussyWat · 25/11/2016 22:42

Yes, YABU. Why would you not tip someone who receives barely minimum wage for providing you with good service? I'd be mortified if I was with you too.

cookieswirls · 25/11/2016 22:44

I just seem to pay them what they ask. I've never thought twice tbh. Oops

This is common in the US where waiters get $2 an hour and rely on those tips. Not in the UK. We never tip here. It's not expected and unless you're tipping all minimum wage workers then I don't see how waiters are any different. I will be buying my child's nursery carers a gift at Christmas though.

rumpelstiltskin43 · 25/11/2016 22:46

Hope you never come to the US on vacation! You'll be classed as a stingy tightass Brit.

cookieswirls · 25/11/2016 22:47

Ha ha rumpel I'm Sure I would !

MontePulciana · 25/11/2016 22:48

But we do it in the US. 20% is normal. It's not a British thing. It's definitely not European either (Italian waiters got really huffy after we once left €1 on the table, chased after us to give it back).

frikadela01 · 25/11/2016 22:49

Yanbu. Tipping is a ridiculous practice that seems to be on the increase. There are many many minimum wage workers who works bloody hard but do not work in the sort of industries where tipping is acceptable. What makes then less worthy than wait staff or hairdressers or taxi drivers?

And fwiw I've worked as a waitress,i was fucking minted when I did Friday and Saturday nights thanks to the tips. I was pulling in far more money than when I was working as a care assistant.

Soubriquet · 25/11/2016 22:49

But like above rumpel everyone is paid minimum wage here.

So unlike the US we don't rely on tips. Though they come in handy

chicaguapa · 25/11/2016 22:49

I was brought up to tip in restaurants so always leave around 10%. I think it's mean not to and do judge if I'm out with other people and they don't. If I was dating I wouldn't see someone again if they didn't tip.

MontePulciana · 25/11/2016 22:50

Isn't minimum wage like £7.50? That's a huge difference from US waiters who are often self employed.

frikadela01 · 25/11/2016 22:50

Oh and I do tip in the US since I understand that wait staff are expected to make up their wage with tips.

user1477282676 · 25/11/2016 22:51

I had a job once...in a very swish restaurant in London where I simply greeted people on the door. Sort of a host.

I got about 2 quid an hour but people used to give me 50 pound notes as a tip.

They'd breeze in and say "Hello darling...can you watch my car?" and point to their stunning vehicle parked on double yellows outside.

For some reason, no car ever got clamped or anything! I used to be shitting myself that a traffic warden would appear and I couldn't do anything about it after they'd dropped me fifty quid!

I loved that job. I'd come out with loadsamoney! It was the early 90s though.

BolivarAtasco · 25/11/2016 22:51

I only ever refuse to tip if the service has been awful. Otherwise 10% for waiting staff, hairdressers, taxis, etc.

Elledouble · 25/11/2016 22:52

Is it not the case that waiters are taxed to take tips into account? That was definitely the rumour when I was a waitress...

cookieswirls · 25/11/2016 22:53

Wow user I wouldn't have taken the money

OP posts:
GabsAlot · 25/11/2016 22:54

i do sometimes depending on the service if its not good i dont tip

BrightOranges · 25/11/2016 22:54

Why tip because they are on the minimum wage? Ia that the customer's fault? And do you tip at a checkout? Or tip a dinner lady or teaching assistant? Or the person who delivers the papers? The list is endless. How about if you received awful service in a restaurant? How do you decide who does get a tip and who doesn't?

MontePulciana · 25/11/2016 22:56

Our neighbour in Salt Lake used to work Friday and Saturday nights in a restaurant and that's all she had to do. Cash in hand. She worked damn hard for it though. I find here you are waiting around for ages for your food and the service is always very average. I love the efficiency in American restaurants.

Lovemyfurfurbabs · 25/11/2016 22:56

Not in the UK. We never tip here.

Eh? I'm in London and I've never not tipped, it's normal.

Soubriquet · 25/11/2016 22:56

Tipping 10% to a hairdresser Hmm

I pay £50 for a cut and blow dry on its own. Am I buggery going to give more bloody money on top
