AIBU?

to think the strikethrough font is used far too often by some people on Mumsnet?

It's beginning to get on my giddy goat.

Doing this is not the same as writing something in brackets

I also see people using it for no discernable reason whatsoever. Someone typing a normal paragraph suddenly starts crossing bits out at random.

It is for using when you say something that you know in your heart of hearts you really shouldn't but you want to say it anyway. Or for comic effect as in "I had half a packet of a couple of biscuits with my cup of tea".

IANBU so don't even talk to me.

I like love strikethroughs
I also love...... the anticipation..... of dots

I HATE CAPITALS PEOPLE FUCKING SHOUTING AT ME

And people who don't use paragraphs, because it gives me a headache

I just cannot get wound up about the your or you're - I'm dyslexic and can be really difficult if feeling emotional or typing something when tired. I take more time in this real world but on a phone it can be really difficult for me. What I do get wound up about is the arseholes who feel the need to point this out to someone who has just written a post that is crying out for help, it is just so very unkind and unnecessary.

Exactly. gives me the rage annoys me slightly.

It is a substitution. If you're not substituting, use brackets.

Have I been doing pointy brackets wrong?
Should they be double pointy brackets?

Neep
I think you can do pointy brackets (aka creepy wee brackets) with 1, 2 or more > and that's perfectly acceptable.

I simply don't think it's funny. It's too often used to make really offensive comments under the guise of attempted wit and the belief that using strike through means you can't have your post deleted for PA or breaking the talk guidelines.

Of course you will Navy That's my point. I think some people honestly think they won't be.

I think people usually use it as a joke against themselves though, don't you Sooty? Although there is definitely a problem with aggression on MN I can't say I've noticed the strike through function being used to disguise direct personal attacks all that often.

oh come on, not this one again Boring!

I vote to start using the underscore a lot more. It's going rusty due to lack of use. A good machine needs use or it falls into disrepair, you know

Love strikethrough too much

For those of you that say you use it at work or in other things, my big question is HOW?? I thought it was just a forum thing and I'm now getting stupidly excited that I will be able to use it in all my emails!

In MS Office you have to right-click and go into Format. Very laborious .

YABU
Strikethroughs are not just instead of brackets.
Most of the time they are used to express something that you know you shouldn't express.
It's also a MN trait.

YABVVU

I seem to remember this was a thing way back in history on LiveJournal and such. But I have been on the internet for a million years. I encourage everybody to adorn their posts as they wish! Nobody is forced to be here reading all this twaddle. (Except the mods, I suppose....)

I know someone in real life who speaks with strike through insertions in normal conversion. I'll try to capture it below. The words struck through are actually spoken, in a sort of stage whisper aside.

Me: Hi, how are you?
Friend: Fine dying slowly and painfully.
Me: That doesn't sound good.
Friend: Yes, it's hard that's what she said.
Me: Oh, err. Kids OK though?
Friend: Yes thanks driving me fucking mad.

I don't mind it at all written here on a forum where humour or self-deprecation is hard to convey, but it's weird to hear it spoken!
