It's beginning to get on my giddy goat.

Doing this is not the same as writing something in brackets

I also see people using it for no discernable reason whatsoever. Someone typing a normal paragraph suddenly starts crossing bits out at random.

It is for using when you say something that you know in your heart of hearts you really shouldn't but you want to say it anyway. Or for comic effect as in "I had half a packet of a couple of biscuits with my cup of tea".

IANBU so don't even talk to me.

DOESN'T BOTHER ME AS MUCH AS THOSE PEOPLE WHO TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPITALS.

Or When People Want To Capitalise The First Letter Of Every Word.

or use lower case on everything for that matter.

But I fucking love the good old strikethrough.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/11/2016 14:59

Used properly, it's a written version of 'did I say that out loud'?

Later, I'm going to have a bottle glass of wine.

Some people use it better than others.

WLF46 · 25/11/2016 15:03

But anyway, strikethrough is not meant as a replacement for using brackets. It's not meant to be the same thing. I see it as a way of stating what you're really thinking without actually saying it. Though obviously you are saying it. That's how it works for me, and how I read other people's usage of it. It adds dubious comedy value.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 25/11/2016 16:01

Ffs! I fucking well said in my op that I think it has its place and how it should be used. I'm not saying "down with strike through", I'm saying use it properly.

So, correct, using strike through is not the same as using brackets. Use brackets when it is appropriate then!!

OP you really are just asking for a thread full of strike throughs

although it's not as annoying as the attempts to strike through that don't work GrinGrin

ageingrunner · 25/11/2016 16:04

People seem to use it for perfectly innocuous sentences they should all be killed

PrincessConsuelaTheSecond · 25/11/2016 16:05

(Sarcasm aside, YANBU)

People do sometimes misuse it, but on the whole it's one of the features I really like on MN. When used properly, it's very funny. I've never really seen it anywhere else.

On the other hand, I have low tolerance for people who write "worse" when they mean "worst", "your" when they mean "you're", and "DD12" when they mean "DD(12)". That last one annoys me far more than it should. The thing I hate most is people who stick trailing dots instead of full stops at the end of every sentence.

JustPoppingBy · 25/11/2016 16:19

I hate it, I have great difficulty reading strike through sentences (eye condition) and I have to skip on if there's more than a word or two
I prefer brackets. Grin

NeepNeepNeep · 25/11/2016 16:21

I agree

NeepNeepNeep · 25/11/2016 16:23

Good point hackmum...

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 25/11/2016 16:23

I like a trail of dots ...................

Floggingmolly · 25/11/2016 16:25

Well pretty much everything is acceptable used correctly, isn't it? Including "Think".
Examples of incorrect use: I had a lovely sandwich at lunch today - think ham and cheese. Or, We've booked our summer holiday - think Italy.
Both real life (MN) examples.
Just Stop It.

Yanbu especially when people use it the wrong way round.

Eg Later, I'm going to have a glass bottle of wine.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 25/11/2016 16:35

Oh dear Lord, the wrong way round example! Grin

derxa · 25/11/2016 16:38

Yes 'think'. I went off at the wrong junction today - think Junction 9 of the M11-

What bugs me is when people cross out the word in the wrong order.

Correct. I told her it was dreadful lovely.
Wrong. I told her it was lovely dreadful its not hard!

TheMortificadosDragon · 25/11/2016 16:57

It's quite a hard one to do accidentally, unlike the random boldings which appear on the app on any discussion involving A level and old-style GCSE grades. I've learnt how to parse AAA but sometimes huge sections get bolded.

and you must know YABU and what would ensue

scottishdiem · 25/11/2016 17:21

I am dyslexic and its a total hassle to read. Also, if a person has learning difficulties, then can find the strikeouts confusing. Look up easyread techniques about this. I also wonder if it is confusing to people whose first language is not English (or not even an alphanumeric based language).

But then people tend not to see others perspectives too well.

Witchend · 25/11/2016 17:27

never Oh maybe.

CageyBee · 25/11/2016 17:31

Oh do fuck off.

See, no strike through required.
