HUGE HUGE apologies to a reasonably recent OP who posted about paracetamol .

I did not think there was anyone out there who didn't know about the risks of taking too much / medicines that contained paracetamol but seems I should have looked closer to home.

There's no explanation for what people choose to filter out.

It's hardly a secret.

But then you have millions of people who voted Brexit/Trump so you just cannot account for acute ignorance.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/11/2016 22:59

But people don't know there's anything to take responsibility over. There's lots of things on the pharmacy section shelves in the supermarket that don't have dangerous active ingredients and that you would just grab off the shelf and use, because that's what you've always done and you don't even think to read the packet other than where it says the brand.

Buddahbelly · 22/11/2016 23:00

I thought everyone knew it has paracetamol in them? It's right there under the name!

Now certain throats sweets...think strepsils if I remember correctly, they were sneaky little bastards, had about 5 in the space of 2 hours at work once, my boss saw me reach for another and had a fit wrestling them off me, had no idea certain throats sweets contain paracetamol

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/11/2016 23:00

Because it's neither a sensible or very intelligent thing to do not to read medicine packets

I don't know quite how to explain this to you. They don't know it's medicine. It's a drink. Pretty much all other medicines you would take on a semi-regular basis are tablets, suspensions, ointments etc.

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:00

It's pretty stupid to take anything off the shelves in the pharmacy section and take it without reading it, don't you think? It's possible to OD on most things there.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 22/11/2016 23:01

Gnome I knew about grapefruit! It makes me feel very peculiar, but only if I drink a shitload of it a whole carton of breakfast juice. DH gives me a sideways look if I have any grapefruit, but I love it Sad

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:02

I don't know how else to explain this to you either. its in the drugs section. With all the other drugs.

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:03

I must admit; I've never, ever met anyone that didn't know that Lemsip didn't have paracetamol in it. Ever.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/11/2016 23:03

And with a lot of things that aren't drugs, like Jakeman's sweeties.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/11/2016 23:04

And Complan.

ohffsnotagain · 22/11/2016 23:05

And Lockets, and Tunes, and tissues and Olbas Oil and the like - you know, general stuff for colds.

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:07

Take too much of any of that and you won't be very well. And FFS it says it contains paracetamol on the box twice on the front.

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 22/11/2016 23:07

Am I the only person that finds it really effective?

Most painkillers are shite unless prescribed ( I have chronic pain and REALLY know my painkillers!) but lemsip is about the only OTC medicine that does what It says on the tin. I've taken all the ingredients as separates washed down with a hot drink, but it's nowhere near as effective.

Can't be placebo, because most OTC painkillers don't work on me.

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:08

Are people really this stupid? Really? So ignorant of the dangers that they will next anything without reading the box?

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:08

It has to be placebo, because paracetamol is paracetamol.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/11/2016 23:09

There are lots of things that are a bit dangerous, where they've been changed because while if you pay attention and are of normal intelligence they're perfectly safe, they cause harm to people too often for it to be left that way. Personally, I think having a dangerous drug like paracetamol in a format that isn't usually used for drug delivery but is frequently used for normal foodstuffs is risky.

OutToGetYou · 22/11/2016 23:10

I've drummed it into dss so much that when he last had a cold he was spacing out his Lockets every four hours.

I didn't tell him he didn't need to, might as well make sure he keeps to good habits. But I don't think dp knew about Lemsip paracetamol until he met me.

Not heard of Strepsils with paracetamol in, will have to watch out for those.

CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:12

It's even on the adverts for Lemsip. It always says 'contains paracetamol'. Honestly, I don't know what else they can do.

Netflixandchill · 22/11/2016 23:12

Aren't strepsils medicated too? I know people who eat them like sweets

bbcessex · 22/11/2016 23:13

My husband swears by Lemsip too Mother.. not my favourite method of delivery, I must say!

Cock.. I am equally astonished that DH did not know.. wouldn't have believed it had I not witnessed it.. thing is, I buy all the medicines usually so I doubt he has even really looked at a box or know It's origin.

OP posts:
CockacidalManiac · 22/11/2016 23:13

The packers advise how many strepsils that can be consumed in 24 hours.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 22/11/2016 23:15

Strepsils have anaesthetic in them, not paracetamol.

Netflixandchill · 22/11/2016 23:16

Lemsip is great on an empty stomach where as taking dry ibuprofen and paracetamol with water when I have a spell of vomiting usually makes me vomit more, I always seem to manage to keep lemsip down.

Obsidian77 · 22/11/2016 23:16

MotherFuckingChainsaw me too! It's the only medication that ever works for me. I don't think its the placebo effect because I also have chronic pain and spend a lot of time hoping drugs will work. I had to take OxyContin for a while and it was shit, but always feel better after a Lemsip.i do not understand this.
