I was concerned that the dog wouldnt like the hair dryer and actually wondered if he was getting a trim as well.
he had obviously had a cut himself, somehwere.
but when i went to sit wherever i sat, with the hairdressers apron gown on me i was a bit concerned that this was the gown the dog had been sitting on

I don't like this. I have 2 dogs and wouldn't dream of taking them to the hairdresser. It's also indicative of the way people treat small dogs differently to large ones. Almost like babies.
I once worked in a clinical environment and a woman wanted to bring her Yorkshire terrier in, in a basket. Nearly didn't notice it. Was deeply offended when I said she couldn't and she was rude to me.
It just wasn't appropriate.

StarryIllusion · 22/11/2016 09:08

I take my dogs everywhere they are allowed. Well one of them. The younger is a bit too bouncy, gigantic puppy stage to take some places but the elder goes everywhere with me. Its good for them. Desensitises them to situations that would otherwise freak them out. She copes with noise, crowds, public transport, children, other animals with no problem, utterly chilled. She even occasionally does care home and hospital visits.

ibelieveindragons · 22/11/2016 09:19

Confused country girl here, dog comes everywhere (he's basically just one of our children) and I wouldn't expect anything else. I don't actually go to hairdressers but I live in a part of the country where he's allowed in lots of cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. He gets as much fuss and attention as the baby! I don't understand why you'd have a dog then leave them at home? (He goes to work with us too- dogs are easier and better behaved than human children lol!)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/11/2016 09:19

People with anxiety, and people who are socially awkward, can feel so much better, and more confident, having their dogs with them.
I love being with my dogs.
However, it could have been an assistance dog.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 22/11/2016 09:27

People seem to think they can take their dogs with them everywhere these days.

I think that people take their dogs with them everywhere less now than they used to.

I would have taken my old dog, now deceased, to the hairdressers or wherever, he was very well behaved and a lot of people in town knew him by name (not mine though!). I wouldn't take the two I have now though, they're both rescues and haven't quite got the manners of my first dog.

YellowBlueBus · 22/11/2016 09:44

Can't believe that some food shops allow them - environmental health anyone?

The law states that dogs are not allowed in food preparation areas. Other than that it's up to management.

I now need to find a hairdresser that has a resident dog or take mine.
Dogs are lovely to have around and far less annoying than some children.
My dog is not smelly or dirty either thanks very much.

Mrskeats · 22/11/2016 10:04

Oh and navy I'm looking at getting a dachshund. Are they as fun as I think they are?

sparechange · 22/11/2016 10:08

My dog is scared of my hairdryer, so I wouldn't take her
But the salon has a resident dog who will happily sit on the laps of anyone who wants to cuddle her, and other people bring their dogs in

The toy shop next door has a resident sausage dog (called Simon!) and I buy all my cards and presents from there to have an excuse to go and say hello to him.

And a nearby beauty salon has a big old Labrador that sleeps by the counter. Or if it's a nice day, in the doorway so people have to step right over her.

Part of the reason I love living where I do

BuggerOffDailyMirror · 22/11/2016 10:12

I'd LOVE to take my dogs everywhere with me... alas, I have basset hounds and they do not share my enthusiasm Blush

I've never seen a dog in the shops round here, it's obviously not a thing where I live.

I love dogs, but one of my sons has ASD & MLD, and is terrified of dogs. I'm not sure people would appreciate his screams if a dog went near him in a shop. And he screams loud!

NotStoppedAllDay · 22/11/2016 10:24

Im a dog lover

But I'm actually surprised people stroll into the store I work at with their dogs on a lead.... in they come! I'm shocked TBH

One peed on the floor last week, which I cleared up, but colleagues were saying ' I wouldn't' 'that's not our job' etc etc

The dog owner knew but pretended to be oblivious so I'm on the fence with this one

Why do people assume it's ok to walk in our (non food selling) large store with their dogs?

YellowBlueBus · 22/11/2016 10:24

Hello Bugger, how are you after your recent ordeal?

I always ask! Or now I just know where to go that's dog friendly. I don't go to cafes/ shops that don't allow dogs (a lot of them even keep dog treats at the till or have a dog menu.) And yes mine would never wee inside and even if he did I would clear it up Shock but tbh I worked in a shop for 2 years where dogs were welcome and they were good as gold, whereas we had a dirty nappy left in the changing room and the kids knocked things over and left sticky marks on things! I agree that for the most part dogs have a wonderful uplifting effect and people love seeing them in their day to day lives, brightens any day!

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/11/2016 10:37

This would be my worst nightmare but I'm not a dog fan. Think I'd probably leave as they make me quite nervous.

Mindyou it wouldn't be as bad as the time (only 10 years ago or so) where I went to a (tiny) hairdressers and the owner allowed smoking indoors, I absolutely reeked coming out!

BuggerOffDailyMirror · 22/11/2016 11:04

YellowBlueBus getting there steadily! Physically I'm recovering really well and my bloods are fine apart from the anemia which is hateful Angry

Mentally, not so good at the moment. GP reckons it's PTSD made worse by a pre-existing GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) diagnosis so it's all a bit fraught right now, plus the anemia makes you constantly tired and the PTSD stops you sleeping.. so that's fun!

I really want to go back to work and get on with things to get my mental health back on track, but I'm not physically well enough yet which is a pain!

Sorry to hijack the thread Blush

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/11/2016 11:19

Good to see you Bugger, you'll get there Sweet.

PeachBellini123 · 22/11/2016 13:49

Starryillusion that's so lovely your dog does hospital/care home visits.

There's a group for disabled children near my parents and every so often they do an animal day. DM takes her very soppy dog there to be petted and fussed over by the kids. The dog loves being the centre of atte tion and the kids love playing with him and the other animals that are there.

Dogs really are amazing creatures.

DonttouchthatLarry · 22/11/2016 14:35

Elbows - love the sound of your dogs! Grin

My hairdresser comes to the house, so my 3 dogs are all in the kitchen with us while we're being 'done' Smile

And we want to move to Keswick as it's so dog friendly!

JellyBelli · 22/11/2016 14:39

Was it a hearing dog for a deaf person, or an epilepsy aware dog?
Dont hairdressers wash the gowns after they are used?

Owllady · 22/11/2016 14:41

I wouldn't take my dog to the hairdressers, no :o
