To serve this portion size to my children (pic inc)

My son is on the 75 centile for height , 20 for weight. My daughter is 50 for height, 25 for weight.
As a family we are very very slim (in 5'7 and weigh just under 8 stone). We're very fit, gym, sport etc

My mil saw this and was appalled. Said it was way way too much. My children would be peckish an hour later if they didn't have this kind of lunch (it's the weekend, hence all the breaded items!).

My son is 6, my daughter 3.5

That sounds incredibly rude of your MIL.

hoddtastic · 19/11/2016 13:34

this is good, shows portions and plate sizes etc,

www.cwt.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CHEW-1-4YearsPracticalGuide3rd-Edition.pdf

they have them for older kids too. Sometimes it's good to get an idea what is the RDA of various things, look at diet over a week, and try and look objectively at your kids. If you can't see bones pretty much sticking out, they are likely to be carrying too much weight.

pringlecat · 19/11/2016 13:35

You say you're an active family. Do your kids look like the right sort of weight for their ages? Are you all doing lots of sport together?

If so, MIL can keep her indignation to herself.

Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:36

And yes, I'm very skinny but I don't look skeletal. I've also been very slim, very fine features. I'm sort of waiting rather than skeletal!

OP posts:
Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:37

Waiting should read waif-ish!

Sorry but they do need more carbs in my opinion. There arent that many carbs in fruit. If you look at the ingredients in fajitas they are full of shite.
Give the kids some bloody potatoes or rice Grin

Trifleorbust · 19/11/2016 13:42

If the children are a healthy weight and energetic, why do you think they need more carbs, BakeOff?

hollinhurst84 · 19/11/2016 13:42

I haven't eaten a potato or rice or pasta for about 4 years, I should be dead by now Wink
Stuff like carrots, sweetcorn etc are carbs
Green leafy veg is generally lower carb

KittyandTeal · 19/11/2016 13:43

I would rejoice in utter happiness if I could get my tall, skinny 4yo dd to eat half of that.

I think it looks reasonable for children of that age, especially if they regularly eat that much and aren't too big/skinny.

I swear people must think I starve my child but I refuse to keep throwing food away!

NicknameUsed · 19/11/2016 13:44

"Salmon fajitas (the fajita... CARB!)"

Sorry, you wrote stir fry not fajitas, and you didn't state what they had for breakfast. I know banana is a carbohydrate, but I would count that as fruit unless I was on a diet. I also know that fruit contains sugars, but unless I was diabetic I wouldn't count that as a carbohydrate either. And nuts are protein and fat, not usually considered as carbohydrate.

Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:46

Bakeoff. You are very committed to carbs.

Be honest, are you a healthy weight?

OP posts:
BakeOffBiscuits · 19/11/2016 13:47

Yes I am, I'm 5 ft 2 and weight 8 st 9. And I eat carbGrin

Amalfimamma · 19/11/2016 13:48

My mil saw this and was appalled. Said it was way way too much.

I hope she never comes to my house then.

DD (20 months) so far today has had:

breakfast
a 9 ounce bottle with 4 rusks in it
2 homemade blueberry muffins
a slice of toast

snack
a mandarin
a pear

lunch
pasta with tomato sauce with speck
1 chicken cutlet
potatoes
peas and carrots
an apple

and a 6 oz bottle to get her to nap.

she still has 2 snacks, dinner and supper to demolish today Hmm

Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:49

You're right nickname.
Son wanted fajitas. Daughter would like stir fry (with noodles before you panic)

Trifle - why do I want children to eat carbs?

Because carbs are absolutely essential for a growing child. Just do a quick google, they're a huge amount of advice on this.

Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:51

Bake off, did you see the full menu I provided?

OP posts:
Blondeandinept · 19/11/2016 13:52

Got to go now but I think you're going to be a bloody difficult mil if you're not careful bakeoff!! It won't be portion control, will be hand wringing "where are th carbs???"

OP posts:
Trifleorbust · 19/11/2016 13:53

BakeOff: I'm not asking them, I'm asking you. The OP has made it clear she isnt asking but, since you insist on giving your advice, I am feeling sure you must have a very strong argument why perfectly healthy and energetic children need a change to their diet on your say-so!

AndNowItsSeven · 19/11/2016 13:54

Breaded mozerella and breaded chicken isn't very healthy is it homemade? Also lacking in carbs.
Do you have smaller plates as the food looks like it's been chucked on the plate.

MyShinyThing · 19/11/2016 13:55

How are fajitas full of shite?

Some form of protein, peppers, onions, spices. Served with sour cream, avocado & a bit of cheese. We're having them tonight.

Looks fine to me OP!

BakeOffBiscuits · 19/11/2016 13:57

Yes I did see the full menu.

To me their food today feels lowish carb- that's fine for adults not children.

Trifleorbust · 19/11/2016 13:59

BakeOff: If the children are fine, that's palpable nonsense.

BakeOffBiscuits · 19/11/2016 14:00

The actual fajita is full of shite not what you put in them!

Many people have said the same as me, not sure why I'm being asked the questions. And no I won't be a difficult MIL as I've brought my children up to eat balanced meals, they are adults now- slim, fit and healthy, and still eating balanced meals which I'm sure they will feed their children.

Trifleorbust · 19/11/2016 14:00

BakeOff: If the children are fine, that's palpable nonsense.

Trifleorbust · 19/11/2016 14:01

Do you have smaller plates as the food looks like it's been chucked on the plate.

Wait. I am on MN or is this the comment board for The Great British Menu?
