I probably am because it raises money for such good causes, but I find the whole television spectical really toe curlingly awful to watch.Every year it's the same old, the BBC newsreaders doing an 'hilarious' song and dance skit, the cast of Eastenders having a sing song and an endless stream of insincere celebrities who are only taking part to make themselves look good.

I really want to like it, but just can't. On the other hand I love Comic Relief and look foreward to that. CiN just leaves me cold.

I'm conflicted because while I find most 'popular weekend television' absolutely dire, it is a very powerful way of engaging the public to raise money for charities that wouldn't survive otherwise.

Charities that have supported my own children, like Penhaligon's Friends who support children through bereavement and the fear of having a sick relative and being a young carer. My daughter wouldn't be coping with life without them.

YANBU - I know someone who refused to donated to CR ever again after they discovered that a local group had received a grant from it.
We live in a naice area -the group was really short of money at the time but it has been used by a lot of people and people have a great fondness for it. Basically if it looked like it was going to go bust we could have had a collection locally and definitely raised enough to keep it going. (and it it is now breaking even again)
They only applied for the grant cos it was available and when they asked an organisation for advice they suggested it and they wanted to be seen doing everything they could - they didn't think they'd actually get a grant....and the minimum they could get (a few hundred) was more than they needed anyway.
(I could say the same about the big Lottery fund too - I think groups etc that are really in need don't have the right resources to put in the right kind of applications -think there should be more help for them)

It serves as a small gesture of humility for the covering up and protection of jimmy saville and all the abuse he was permitted to carry out on all the most vulnerable kids for decades. They were the original children in need.
Ah well, the good old Beeb has made amends by the existing CIN charity so that's lovely.
It just does not sit well with me. I won't be watching.

herbaceous · 18/11/2016 20:02

I find Pudsey Bear so irritating I want to punch him in the face.

So, I shan't be watching.

TeacherBob · 18/11/2016 20:02

I also REALLY hate the celeb bashing that happens.

The chances are they DO donate plenty. Most do lots for charity. And whatever their reasons the result after doing this is more raised for charity.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 18/11/2016 20:02

YANBU. What infuriates me is Cheryl Coke and the like doing sadface pieces to camera asking people to just donate a few pounds to make this person over here's life better. Erm excuse me love, you're the rich one, put your own money in and don't guilt trip those who barely have 2 pennies to rub together. It's just weightless virtue signalling

somewheresomehow · 18/11/2016 20:03

I hate it as well
All the so called 'celebs' begging us to give money and I bet they all get a good pay off for it

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 18/11/2016 20:03

OOps i meant Cheryl Cole Blush that's how rumours get started Wink

LouisvilleLlama · 18/11/2016 20:04

The auction is for Things That Money CAN Buy, clearly. Because they do.

CIN has lost its USP, it already isn't and won't be, the same.

Namechangeemergency · 18/11/2016 20:09

I have issues with it but I don't hate it.
Whenever they use Young Carers I want to scream at the tv 'those families should be getting proper help then you would NEED to raise funds for Young Carers days out and community centres!'
I don't like the disnefication of childhood cancer in order to raise funds i.e. sad but nothing too distressing, pretty bald children but no pictures of the more unpleasant aspects of the disease.

BUT BUT BUT....we need CIN more than ever. Stuff that used to be funded by government is not longer funded because its not statutory. CIN money won't just be used for nice extras and special treats. It will be increasingly used for things you would assume were provided with your taxes.

I have worked in the public and charity sector nearly all my adult life. The families and kids I work with need that money.

As much as CIN can annoy me sometimes its nothing to the rage inducing FB statuses that are vomited out every year. Moaning and complaining and peddling urban myths and other bollocks about CIN. I have deleted more people on CIN and Comic Relief nights than at any other time.

I remember one woman moaning that money was going to 'those sorts of children' (poor, disadvantaged) and not to 'curing cancer'.

Speaking as someone who lost my child to cancer I found that fucking outrageous on so many levels.

So YANBU for not liking it but if you think it doesn't do any good or that we don't need it YABU.

Rosie

All charities keep a buffer.

Warl · 18/11/2016 20:16

Hate them all, children in need, comic relief, text Santa, stand up to cancer.

We actively fundraise several times a year for 3 charities very close to our hearts & donate to several more regularly but I find the televised appeals contrived

glitterandtinsel · 18/11/2016 20:17

Elledouble, exactly... I'm cash strapped they're rolling in it. They say they give their time... I think they should give a million instead!

Summerwood1 · 18/11/2016 20:17

I can't stand it either. I've been looking forward to watching Citizen Khan all week and then realised today ,that it's not on.😧

Andrewofgg · 18/11/2016 20:18

In our own minds we've all been as rich as Bill Gates twice over.

Andrew: So how much did it raise this year?
BBC: A squillion pounds.
Andrew: Here's five squillion, now give us three years off!

Riversiderunner · 18/11/2016 20:20

YANBU

I would like to know how much these celebs are being paid to take part - don't think think they do it free out of the goodness of their own hearts.

Part of my job involves celebs doing stuff like that for really decent charities and I have been GOBSMACKED at the fees they demand and what they turn down because the huge sums of money are just not huge enough.

MsJudgemental · 18/11/2016 20:20

YANBU. Hate all these things. Sub-standard so-called entertainment. Just ask for a donation and stop interfering with the schedules.

Lynnm63 · 18/11/2016 20:24

I don't watch it as I don't want to watch most of the people on it. I do donate and the DC buy from the bake sales at school and pay their £1 for non uniform day.
I agree it's shitty that charities are providing for young carers, the govt should fund that properly as all carers save the govt shed loads of money. It's the same with GOSH, our foremost children's hospital reliant on charity money.
The charity auctions boil my pass too. Rich people buying fun things, they should sell raffle tickets that way we can all get a chance to win those.

DrDreReturns · 18/11/2016 20:25

I hate it too. It's shite.

WouldHave · 18/11/2016 20:27

Just ask for a donation and stop interfering with the schedules.

But we know perfectly well that that wouldn't be anything like as successful in raising money.

FFS, what is it with all the hate? How does it hurt any of you? No-one forces you to watch or to give money.

FucksSakeSusan · 18/11/2016 20:30

YANBU

Millionaires telling people, many of whom are only just keeping a roof over their heads, to give money,

All of which goes to fill in the gaps in services caused by a lack of government money, in no small part because people like aforementioned millionaires avoid paying taxes.
