To hate Children in Need?

I probably am because it raises money for such good causes, but I find the whole television spectical really toe curlingly awful to watch.Every year it's the same old, the BBC newsreaders doing an 'hilarious' song and dance skit, the cast of Eastenders having a sing song and an endless stream of insincere celebrities who are only taking part to make themselves look good.

I really want to like it, but just can't. On the other hand I love Comic Relief and look foreward to that. CiN just leaves me cold.

It's all so naff. A bunch of gurning celebs hamming it up for hours on end to up their own profiles. Bleugh.

I don't like it either- largely because I once had the misfortune to work for a charity that got CIN funding. I saw how I was wasted and I heard stories of similar at other places.

I sincerely hope that my experience is a minority one but I don't know if it is or not so I don't donate.

NB: before I'm flamed obv I did report concerns correctly, charity involved no longer receives CIN funding and I was not complicit in the deception.

Matchingbluesocks · 18/11/2016 19:37

I don't watch it as its dull. It passes me by a bit: I don't donate but probably wouldn't whether i watched it or not

ThoraGruntwhistle · 18/11/2016 19:37

I donate via the DC doing stuff at school but I'm not watching the programme. It's bloody awful.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 18/11/2016 19:39

Not a massive fan of the famous asking for money or the ridiculous 'auctions' that ordinary folk can't participate in but it's important for people to see where the donations go & this is why I think it's great.
I've donned the Pudsey outfit for 2 years at work offering 'cash for photo opportunities' & literally sweated my arse off in the fucking thing , but then I've watched the stories which always make me cry & thought that was well worth it for the cash we've raised.

EveOnline2016 · 18/11/2016 19:41

Will not be the same without sir terry wogan

WouldHave · 18/11/2016 19:44

I donate to charity whenever I can, I don't need to be told/forced by anyone

But self-evidently that doesn't apply to millions of others, otherwise charities would be awash with money. Do you really begrudge them that money?

Bertucci · 18/11/2016 19:46

I have just tolerated 3 minutes of some hideous Disney medley before I yelled 'turn this crap off!'

Like a horrendous school production, but worse.

Chinlo · 18/11/2016 19:48

I think I watched part of it once about 20 years ago.

So yes, YABU to "hate" a charity event that raises a lot of money for good causes and has zero effect on your life unless you actively choose to watch it.

TeacherBob · 18/11/2016 19:49

I think it says more about us as a society.

That we 'need' an event with celebs fronting etc, to make donations to charity.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 18/11/2016 19:51

I never watch this or Comic Relief. I donate for the kids/me to dress up. Buy some cakes from a bake sale and sometimes buy the merchandise (I wore Pudsey ears to work today) but I don't feel the need to watch the type of variety entertainment that I usually avoid like the plague just because it's for a good cause.

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 18/11/2016 19:52

Whose the guy hosting... he can't use the autocue very well.

mycatisawesome · 18/11/2016 19:52

I hate the Chris Evans stuff too mostly aimed at people with loads of money. However it does raise money for the charity and my child received treatment funded by them which they would never have had without it for which I will I am eternally grateful

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 18/11/2016 19:54

Personally, I don't think you are being unreasonable for hating CIN. You can hate what you like. I don't watch it. I give money towards the charity and I have no issues with it being on TV - it is once a year. But like you, I find the whole evening full of the same old 'stuff'. Some people find it entertaining, some don't. Some like GOT, some don't. Some like TWD, some don't. I wouldn't think badly of anyone who didn't watch it and that's not just because I don't.

Moonshine86 · 18/11/2016 19:54

I love it! Proper family night in front of the tv. It is very enlightening for children to watch.
Inspiring 😀

Tinabn · 18/11/2016 19:54

Duran Duran on BBC Four, am singing in harmony.
Give money to the charities dear to you when and if you can afford it, don't worry about celebs doing the equivalent of the school staff panto.
God knows what I'll do when the Good Old Days are on though.

LouisvilleLlama · 18/11/2016 19:54

TBH since leaving school for the last 8-9 years I don't know it's on often until the next day it's for a good cause but easy to avoid

Sparklingbrook · 18/11/2016 19:55

Yep BBC4 is doing a chart from the 80s. It's great. Number one is Come on Eileen though. That's not great.

AnyFucker · 18/11/2016 19:55

I hate it

I hate the whole idea we need it in the first place

I hate z list celebs using it as self promotion

I hate the fact that some woman with more money than sense was enabled to pay 1.1 million to watch fat Gary Barlow in her living room

That money does not reach it's target. If it did, why does absolutely fuck all change year on year ?

Janey50 · 18/11/2016 19:56

YANBU. I feel exactly the same. I think it is one big cringe-fest. I approve of the sentiment, but I just cannot watch it any more.

Twogoats · 18/11/2016 19:56

It's always been shite tbf

Sallystyle · 18/11/2016 19:56

I'm only watching because some of 'my' Rock Choir members are singing.

Then I will watch a horror.

LouisvilleLlama · 18/11/2016 19:57

And I know it's the point but anything like the sad stories I can't watch (which is mostly why I avoid it) the stand up to cancer one really set my health anxiety off the 5-10 minutes I saw and in someways still am affected by it, i get really mentally affected by them but as I said good cause but easy to ignore

Twalls · 18/11/2016 19:58

I hate it with a passion, always have. Well paid celebrities just trying to get another gold star on the careers. Nauseating shite. They should publish how much money the celebrities mincing around in front of the cameras have actually donated themselves.
