I have finally got onto the waiting list at our council. Don't know what to expect other than a huge wait but tbh its given me hope that I might have somewhere secure to bring up my children in 2 or 3 years time.

I'm wondering to those of you in council housing or housing association ones are you happy with the condition it's in? I'm getting far ahead of myself but I wondered about what people do if they get offered somewhere that has alot of damp for example. I'm very easy pleased, just want a place that's decent and clean.

Is your place well looked after when it comes to repairs or suchlike?

Thanks Smile

It's hit and miss here. Brand new needing nothing at all doing or need everything doing. If you refuse three (regardless of circumstances or the state of the house) you go back to the bottom of the queue

There have been many complaints about Swale Heating Robert Heath Heating and Liberty Gas. These companies do gas servicing and boiler maintenance work for a LOT of HAs. Check out twitter and facebook for reviews Bloody mind boggling the misery that has been inflicted on HA tenants by these companies.

Just seen an HA tweet about the fact that they had a group in to educate tenants about healthy eating when they have been known to leave tenants without cooking facilities.

The hypocrisy is mind blowing.

I temped for a housing association for a few weeks
This particular housing association expects you to remove carpets , laminate and Lino when you leave a property. As if they are left in the property , the housing association would then have an obligation to repair/ replace if neededf

I've lived in council houses in three different councils and they've all been pretty well maintained - repairs are done quickly and they have done major refits like kitchen, boiler, bathroom after a few years. We've had double glazing installed as well.

I've had to do all cosmetic stuff like painting walls, and flooring is my responsibility, but the previous tenants had left it decorated just fine, although I changed it soon after moving in because it just wasn't to my taste. Appliances and furniture are all mine but again I'd rather be using something I've chosen myself anyway.

I live in a council block of flats now and the communal areas are cleaned and inspected several times a week so they are pretty well maintained. There is some fly tipping occasionally but it's dealt with swiftly, we don't have issues with dog poo or dodgy people hanging around. It is a nice enough estate that young professionals rent out flats here for 4x my rent (it's in a deprived but very central bit of London).
