www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3944882/Nutter-Fort-Primary-School-teacher-snatches-microphone-autistic-boy.html

It's a DM link sorry....this teacher in a US primary school....she SNATCHED the microphone from a little boy who has Autism right before he said his line.

:(

It's made me really sad...it seems that some people have not moved past the 1970s in attitudes and think squashing children emotionally is "ok"

Some comments have said "she thought the play was over" and that the child had other lines in the play.

SO??? His face is devastating! He was really distressed! I'm inexplicably angry over this...a child so far away and yet he could be any child who has Autism....it's not ok!

Thing is allow, is that she let him say it a few times before this, she let him wonder around on stage during the performance. It was OBVIOUS when he was queueing up (again) as what he was about to do, so who in the hell waits until the child is at the front of the line to snatch away the mic, instead of asking another adult (i.e either of BOTH his parents who were watching, or another teacher, or even talking to him herself) to distract him, talk to him about what was going to happen, and to move him away?

She had plenty of time to take a different course of action, but she didn't. She waited until the last minute to do something that was bloody cruel!!

SaucyJack · 18/11/2016 11:33

"so who in the hell waits until the child is at the front of the line to snatch away the mic,"

She didn't. It's quite clear from the video that she goes over to get the mic as soon as the other two boys' scripted "thanks and goodnight" blah was finished.

It's disappointing for the little boy and his parents that he didn't get yet another go at the mic, but his teacher hasn't done anything wrong.

SoupDragon · 18/11/2016 11:42

Maybe he had been gently told over and over again in rhearsals that he couldn't do this.
Maybe 7 other children had also been told over and over again that they couldn't do something similar.
Who knows? No one other than the teaching staff and the boy I imagine.

Apparently he was wandering about onstage. Is that wellbehaved?

I agree that it looks as if she deliberately took the mic away but it wouldn't surprise me if she had good reason for that.

As a pp said it may be that he had been told time and time again that he couldn't do a final, unscripted "gobble gobble" but he went ahead and tried to do it anyway.

I understand that reasonable adjustments need to be made but if he was deliberately defying the teacher then that's not okay. The closing lines of the play belonged to another child not him so why she he take the shine off someone else's 'moment of glory'?

Of course I'm making assumptions here but then again so is everyone commenting here. None of us know the full truth and probably never will.

Mindfields · 18/11/2016 12:32
  • should he, not "she he"
Gileswithachainsaw · 18/11/2016 12:40

She wasn't even looking at him Hmm

Play had finished.

He wasn't even meant to say that line he wasn't a turkey.

She was nit looking at him at the time.

Of course mention any kind of SN or illness and people seem.to be unable to see past anything else . Which of course the DM know and have done yet again with apparently alot of success..

Meanwhile the parents act like dicks and humiliate their child and encourage people to get "revenge" on a teacher..

RhiWrites · 18/11/2016 12:43

Yes, I agree with mindfields.

"Miss, I think at the end the turkey should say gobble gobble."
"No, Caleb, we need to follow the script, the turkey says his lines earlier."
"But Miss I think it would be really good."
"No, Caleb, you have your lines and Max has his lines, then that's the end."
"Well, I'm just going to say gobble gobble anyway."
"Sorry, Caleb, but no."

And then the events we see. This isn't a teacher depriving a SN child of a role in the play, it's a teacher not allowing one child to grandstand over everyone else's performance.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 18/11/2016 12:48

I think it's disgusting to share footage of a child's upset, regardless of his 'condition' to be honest. The DM, the OP and anyone else who 'shares' things like this should be ashamed of themselves. As if the Daily Fail gives a shit about vulnerable children with their constant immigrant and benefits bashing.

And please don't spell 'autism' with a capital 'A'. That pisses me right off. My son has a different way of thinking and a different way of socialising.. One day, hopefully, we'll live in a society that accepts this, rather than judging or pitying, or needing labels.

Isitadoubleentendre · 18/11/2016 13:01

Oh my god that poor teacher! What a twat that mum is sharing that video like that, now the teacher is being called 'a fat heffer' and there are calls for her to lose her job, what the fuck is wrong with people?

There is a #justiceforcaleb hashtag as well - get.a.grip.

No wonder no one wants to be a teacher these days, im glad our school allows no filming, that could have been any teacher.

It is a worry, there seems to be more and more of these things where someone shares someone elses image on the internet with a completely one sided story and that person gets absolutely ripped apart. I would say shame on the daily mail, but i would expect nothing better from them to be honest.

Mindfields · 18/11/2016 13:06

The mother is milking this for all it's worth - repeated reposting of the video on her timeline. She needs to fuck right off with the #TeamGobbleGobble shite too. Wait until her son gets a bit older and that becomes his nickname then she can post about how he's being bullied Hmm

Still, I'm sure Caleb will be showered with gifts from well-wishers, perhaps even a Go Fund Me nest egg. I bet the family get plenty of free turkeys for Thanksgiving this year too. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Isitadoubleentendre · 18/11/2016 13:12

The mum has put all the schools contact details on her public Facebook page, has named the teacher, people are sharing the teachers Facebook page, so she is probably getting all sorts of abuse now. What a horrible invasion of privacy, there is absolutely reason why she couldn't have just taken this up with the school. And all this 'you can silence one of us but you can't silence all of us bollocks' - no one was 'silencing' anyone, it was the end of the show, she wasn't even looking, she heard that line, which she will have heard a hundred times before, will have though 'thank god, its over!' and grabbed the mic.

How dare that mother do that. How fucking dare she.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/11/2016 13:14

I don't understand why the article says he was playing a turkey. He looks to have the same costume as the other kids. Head dress and the coat thing. Looks like he's just pulled it all up.

So how is the teacher supposed to let own an Indian is suddenly going to transform himself into a turkey a say a completely unscripted line.

Naughty teacher failing her psychic exam and thinking she should still teach..Confused

Mindfields · 18/11/2016 13:30

Giles

I didn't even notice that it was the same costume as the other kids but pulled over his head! I just thought it was a really shit turkey costume Confused

BishopBrennansArse · 18/11/2016 13:35

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/11/2016 13:36

Could be wrong of course.

But I'd not take my chances sharing a thanksgiving dinner with the costume designer. Not sure what I'd be served up...

BishopBrennansArse · 18/11/2016 13:36

Posted before finishing- what an appalling post.

MrsJayy · 18/11/2016 13:37

Poor kid but the teacher was probably running to programme and it wasn't meant shame on whoever put this online boy humiliated a teacher humiliated. Presenter on loose women tried to make out he wasn't allowed to do his bit with a ridiculous head tilt

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/11/2016 13:40

Why is it appalling?

It's clearly done on purpose.

Even when it's irrelevant in order to paint as bad as picture as possible The DM will inevitably put something in the head lines.. be it SN or breastfeeding or whatever because people immediately look at things in a completely outraged way despite facts being completely wrong and context withheld.

Amd of course knowing full well that anyone pointing it out will he told they are appalling...

Works clearly

BishopBrennansArse · 18/11/2016 13:43

No, it's shutting down the disabled community by stating that everything is all about them.
Why on earth can't issues affecting the disabled community be spoken about without being shut down?

honkinghaddock · 18/11/2016 13:46

I doubt she was being deliberately nasty. The situation could possibly have been managed better but sometimes people get it wrong. Have words with the school if you feel the need but sticking on Facebook etc is wrong.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/11/2016 13:47

What on earth are you on about.

The story is making out a teacher was deliberately mean to an autistic child.

Yet the video shows she quite possibly didn't even see him and he played had ended and he wasn't even playing the role claimed if the costume is anything to go by.

The parents are deliberately using the fact their child has autism to gain sympathy from.hundreds of people in the very paper they could trust to make he teacher look as bad as possible and spread lies about a potentially innocent teacher.

Nothing to do with shutting anyone down.pointing it out

Mindfields · 18/11/2016 13:49

The costume designer definitely needs a bit more practice.

I do believe that Caleb was supposed to be a turkey hence the line "I gotta run" when the others were talking about what they were going to cook.

If he was due to have the final words in the play then the teacher was bang out of order. It doesn't appear this was the case though or the outraged parent would have made that clear.

If it were an NT child then the internet would be full of people saying ' ha ha ha serves the spoilt brat right'. Because he has high functioning autism the cyber world goes crazy calling for the teacher to be lynched.

Amanda Riddle feeling pissed off.
