To get annoyed by Christmas jumpers

I sort of know I'm being a bit of a grinch here, but I've started to see adverts with Christmas jumpers on, and it winds me up. I know it's just a bit of fun, but I get annoyed to see big retailers selling them to us as if they're some universal timeless tradition, whereas, it's a relatively new phenomenon and way for companies to make money.

I know this a first world problem, but AIBU to be annoyed? Anyone else?

YABU - of course they're there to make money, so is just about everything else to do with Christmas!! Also, you're not obliged to partake in novelty jumper wearing, you can simply ignore no?

firstdatesfear · 16/11/2016 13:16

I have that one donaj it's a size too big so looks even more ridiculous than its meant to but I collected it from the PO on my way to a Christmas event nearly 3 years ago so didn't have time to swap it. It's great fun and comes out every year!

ragz134 · 16/11/2016 13:19

YANBU. They wind me up as much as Halloween themed t shirts. Wear once a year...
Our school started Christmas jumper day a few years ago. I refuse to buy 3 new jumpers that will be worn for a few hours, so...
I sewed on a load of poundland mini baubles to some of their old jumpers. Looked festive and cost two quid! Teachers were very impressed!

x2boys · 16/11/2016 13:19

they annoy me too but you dont have to pay a fortune at the supermarket for them i got ds1 one from primark for £7 and they are even cheaper on the market.

ChocolateBudgeCake · 16/11/2016 13:24

I dislike them because I hate jumpers full stop. I never wear jumpers because I'm busty and short and they make me look ridiculous.

Plus I work in a school and with all the warm little bodies in a confined space, rushing around like a mad thing and the ancient heating system it's always tropical even in the depths of winter. I bought one last year to wear on the day of the xmas play and took it off about 5 minutes after I arrived at school!!!

I'm too warm blooded for jumpers so I can't join in the Chris jumper fad even if I wanted to!

harderandharder2breathe · 16/11/2016 13:25

The only reason I don't like them is that my my office is boiling hot all year round so can't actually wear it unless I want to melt so it just sits on the back of my chair Sad must remember to wear it to brownie Christmas outing though!

I have Christmas leggings too Grin

Loosechange1 · 16/11/2016 13:53

JellyBelli - I would say they are holding out for that elf jumper, but it's an infant school so probably not.

Hillarious · 16/11/2016 13:57

I bought a very tasteful, woollen one 25 years ago from Laura Ashley. It was reduced from about £40 to £25 and it felt very indulgent to buy it at the time. Still going strong after all these years. I think it's rather nice - just a fairisle jumper in Christmas colours that you'd have to look twice at to realise it's a Christmas jumper - but the holly gives it away. I like those kind of jumpers, not the garish ones with fat, drunk Santas, or anything bright blue.

If you are the only parent annoyed with the school about this, then I can see how you feel you have to comply so your children don't feel the odd-one-out. I bet other parents feel the same though, have you asked around?

Giratina · 16/11/2016 14:03

Christmas jumpers are so last year. It seems to be all about matching mother/daughter Christmas swing dresses on my facebook feed this year.

KellysZeros · 16/11/2016 14:07

I am feeling a bit better now. Im not the only grumpy sod. Others have expressed why theyre annoying better than I have. They`re far from being the biggest challenge facing humanity.

My 2 year old is wearing her Christmas jumper for the first time this year, I knitted it myself so making sure she gets lots of wear out of it. It's a cracking jumper if I say so myself.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2016 14:11

I got DD a cheap one with a unintentionally evil looking penguin on it a couple of years ago and she's worn it a lot - I try to discourage her from getting it out before December though. Its had a good wear to cost ratio already and I think will probably last her for a good few xmases to come.

CaoNiMao · 16/11/2016 14:17

It's part of this odd herd mentality I've been noticing. It's related to the virulent poppy-wearing thing, I'm sure. Somehow.

wejammin · 16/11/2016 14:20

I love winter jumpers, kitsch ones with downhill skiers or snowflakes are fab.

Christmas jumpers on the other hand, I hate. I can wear a jumper around 8 months of the year, but not if it's got a giant Christmas related motif on it. What a waste of money and resources.

DS is only in primary so I don't know if he's doing a jumper day. Most of the kids in his class don't even celebrate Christmas. I shall be grinchy if he has to get one (has to, as in, I don't want him to feel left out so of course he will wear one).

HardcoreLadyType · 16/11/2016 14:46

Ifailed, I am sure I could email other parents and get an anti-Christmas sweater lobby together. However, I work full time and my DC are in senior school. I have other priorities.

You asked if there was, in fact, an expectation that children wear a Christmas jumper to school. I have explained that, yes there is. Of course it is not compulsory, but peer pressure has a lot to answer for. This is also the experience of some others on this thread.

If other people like to wear Christmas sweaters, I have no issue with that. However, I dislike them, and think they are a waste of money, and would rather not be expected to buy them for my DC.
