To get annoyed by Christmas jumpers

KellysZeros · 16/11/2016 11:42

I sort of know I'm being a bit of a grinch here, but I've started to see adverts with Christmas jumpers on, and it winds me up. I know it's just a bit of fun, but I get annoyed to see big retailers selling them to us as if they're some universal timeless tradition, whereas, it's a relatively new phenomenon and way for companies to make money.

I know this a first world problem, but AIBU to be annoyed? Anyone else?

Christmas jumpers are fun

SaucyJack · 16/11/2016 12:12

It's a thing these days generally to buy cheap, mass-produced crap from supermarket for every and all occasions. It's not specifically Xmas jumpers. There's Hallowe'en shite. Easter presents. Valentine's Day. Elves on shelves yadda yadda.
It's due to the Lipstick effect- i.e. people buying little "luxuries" to cheer themselves up during times of economic downturn.

The jumpers are particularly awful tho, I'll give you that.

Clarinet1 · 16/11/2016 12:13

Well I'm actually wearing my Christmas jumper today! Not because I like to celebrate Christmas ridiculously early but just because it "called out to me" when I looked in the wardrobe this morning. It is relatively restrained in that it is plain navy blue but says "Snow Joke" on the front in big sequinned letters. Got it in Sainsbury's last year when they were reduced about a week before Christmas. Admittedly I don't have DC so I am not subject to any cajoling from schools etc but I quite like the jumpers as a bit of fun.

BigginsforPope · 16/11/2016 12:13

Actually Kelly I kind of agree with you. There does seem to be a pressure to buy a new one each year "for charity" and schools near here are promoting this. I think it is incredibly wasteful and puts unfair pressure on parents.

It is another new tradition which I don't like along with that bloody elf thing!

Call me Grinch

HardcoreLadyType · 16/11/2016 12:13

Ifailed, my DC have had Christmas sweater days at school. If yours haven't you are lucky. And please don't tell me they don't have to do it. Of course they don't, but would you want your DC to be the only ones without a Christmas sweater? As a child, I was always the freaky odd one out - I don't want that for my children, thanks.

shovetheholly · 16/11/2016 12:15

I don't get Christmas jumpers. Yes, many are gloriously, funnily naff. But surely you can only wear them for, like, a month a year? Seems like a waste of wardrobe space all the rest of the time? (Perhaps other people have larger wardrobes than I do, though! Grin)

MackerelOfFact · 16/11/2016 12:16

I'm not adverse to a Christmas jumper, but there is an irksome undertone of "I'm just ker-ayzee, me!" among many of the wearers. They're like the modern equivalent of deely-boppers or something.

DoinItFine · 16/11/2016 12:16

They are so naff.

I used to enjoy it when people would find the ugliest winter jumper possible of the type your auntie would buy you in Dunnes for Christmas.

Now they are buying purpose made "ironic" jumpers that are deliberately ugly.

It has taken all the fun out of it.

MaybeDoctor · 16/11/2016 12:17

I don't really like jumpers - I get too hot in them and then struggle to take them off due to heat, static and wild hair.

Begins fruitless search for seasonal cardi.

Yamadori · 16/11/2016 12:17

You don't half get hot when you are forced (by small dc's) to wear a big fluffy jumper whilst spending hours in the boiling kitchen slaving over a giant turkey etc. Never again!

almondpudding · 16/11/2016 12:17

My Summer clothes only get worn for about two months of the year!

museumum · 16/11/2016 12:17

ach, people have worn daft xmas earrings or whatever for the last week at work as long as i've been working (20 years), jumpers were usually private for family but it doesn't bother me. I'd like to get one and have it come out every year for xmas eve cosying up.
This year i'm knitting one for my ds.... very sweet and gives me something to keep me off mn in the evenings. If it works i might even knit my own (would never wear my own home knitting any other time!)

paintroller00 · 16/11/2016 12:19

How do you wash the flashing lights ones? Can you only wear them once?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 16/11/2016 12:20

Yes, my Dc had a Christmas jumper day at school last year. I was Angry that school just expected everyone to either own or buy one. I really grudged paying £24 for 2 Tesco jumpers just so I could donate £2 to charity!
In the end, one DD wore her "Frozen" Olaf jumper; the other DD just didn't want to bother (she has ASD and is very fussy about clothes) and I still paid the donation.

WonderWine · 16/11/2016 12:21

I'm with you... hate them!
The kids' school had a Christmas jumper/onesie day two years ago and we bought some vile acrylic things which they refused to wear in the end.

Think there must have been lots of complaints as this year it's just a 'Festive Red & Green' day...

MrsJayy · 16/11/2016 12:21

How are you with elf on the frigging shelf op because it gives me the frothy rage Grin dont mind a christmas jumper though

JellyBelli · 16/11/2016 12:22

You know if you have to do things like wear an Xmas jumper to work? You have to learn how to be more subversive creative;
Knit a fetching zombie father xmas picture knit.
Swap with colleagues, or defiantly wear the same charity shop bargain each year.

alltouchedout · 16/11/2016 12:25

I have one because we were expected to buy and wear one and donate to charity for the pleasure of wearing it, at my old work last year. Ds1&2 also were expected to do the same for school. It irritated me immensely.

lunchboxtroubles · 16/11/2016 12:29

My daughter's school are clear it can be a festive colour or just stick some tinsel on a jumper.

Her £10 mothercare jumper is on its third year for her and my younger one will wear it too this year so we are at £2.50 per wear and falling!

Shockers · 16/11/2016 12:29

I just pimped an ordinary jumper for DD's Christmas jumper day at school. A fleece snowman, with a felt 3D nose and some glittery pom pom snow.

Just like any other fancy dress project- you can buy or make it.

I really couldn't work up the energy to get annoyed about them.

ClashCityRocker · 16/11/2016 12:29

I got told off at work on chrismas jumper day.

Apparently 'when I think about you I touch my elf' is not the message of cheery goodwill they were hoping for.

I'm a great subversive employee.

Loosechange1 · 16/11/2016 12:30

I'm with you, OP. They're everywhere, I'm sure there weren't this many on sale for adults last year.

There's a Christmas jumper competition at school, and no, we don't have to, but now the children want to.

It becomes yet another thing to buy. Advent calendars are being sold everywhere too.
Luxury when I was young was a chocolate advent calendar. Even Smiggle has one.

I know it's commercialism and it's consumer driven, but you spend a fortune on things you don't need before it's even the first week on December.

Pffft. Call me Scrooge. I'm starting to think I'm the grounded one.

Spudlet · 16/11/2016 12:30

DH has a Star Wars Christmas jumper, complete with AT-ATs. I think the Death Star may also feature?

Unfortunately, no picture survives of me last year, 12 days overdue on Christmas Day, wearing a Christmas jumper and an expression of deep unjollity 😆

I like them, but if you don't - don't wear one. Adults get to do that, you know.

JellyBelli · 16/11/2016 12:32

Loosechange1 How are they going to judge an Xmas jumper competition?

Namechangenurseryconcerns · 16/11/2016 12:32

Ah I am usually against consumerism but I'm quite fond of Christmas jumpers! I've had the same one for 3 years and wear it most evenings in December as well as for designated 'Christmas jumper days'.
Dcs have them and they get a fair amount of wear out of them too.
I even bought one of those Christmas dresses last year and wore it more than I've worn other dresses in my wardrobe!
