PIL wish to take DD on holiday but during term time - AIBU to refuse?

PIL have asked if they can take DS and his cousin to US to see other family members. We have said yes, lovely, thank you but not during school time. We have given them the dates for half term and Easter hols next year. FIL keeps texting me with flight dates during term time. DD has never missed any school days for holidays, he's now in year 6. At a push DH and I have agreed he could miss two days either side of a school holiday if this helped with flight bookings. DH sister is happy for her child (cousin) to miss school (also year 6). I feel we look like the baddies. DD does not know a trip is on the cards. AWBU to insist upon travel during (predominantly) the school holidays?

Ask school for a weeks worth of school work

Yes.... and generate a whole lot of work for the teacher while they try and sort it. Hmm
Schools are under no obligation to provide work for term time holidays.

If you lived in my LA, you wouldn't be considering this! My DC's school would not grant the holiday leave, and they would fine us- think its £60 per day of absence. The HT is then obligated to report the unauthorised absence to the LA, who would then fine us £1000... Make sure you know where you stand.

Isn't it £60 per parent per child? So for DS and his cousin £240/day.

I agree about the attitude. Although, I remember my parents taking me out of school in the 80s and I was just really embarrassed tbh - at doing something other children weren't, although it was obviously less of a big deal then with the school.

Stick to your decision and principles OP.

It's not per day it's per absence.

DoinItFine · 17/11/2016 19:59

Presumably every day you are off counts as a separate absence?

supersop60 · 17/11/2016 20:39

YANBU, however, after SATS is as good a time as any. Missing school will matter much more in High School.

No every day doesn't count as a separate absence.
