To be annoyed that my GP doesn't want to give me the pill?

AVirginLitTheCandle · 15/11/2016 15:41

I realise he's just doing his job and I probably am BU but I just need to vent and hopefully get some advice.

I have taken the pill on and off over the past 11 years with no problems however my dad has suffered two blood clots over the past couple of years. Because of this the GP is now reluctant to prescribe me the pill as he feels it's too risky.

I'm annoyed but now I have no clue what my options are. I have just recently entered a new relationship and I don't want to rely on condoms alone. I had the implant a few years ago and hated it - mood swings, depression, heavy and painful periods, etc. So that's out.

So what does that leave? Mini pill, coil (no thanks!) or injection (which is what GP is pushing me to have). I've read up on the injection previously and it just sounds horrible.

Arrggh, I want my pill, damn it! Angry Sad

Never taken the pill, only have one planned child. Look at the other options available. I used persona for years which meant we only needed condoms for about five days a month.

funkky · 16/11/2016 18:10

Thanks Sarah for that breakdown. Having never used it and considering it, your post Makes my understanding that bit clearer

ohgoodlordthatsmoist · 16/11/2016 18:11

Can you go to your local sexual health clinic rather than your doctor if you are concerned about the insertion of the coil? They will be much better practiced at installing them than a surgery nurse who might only do a couple a month.

Maireadplastic · 16/11/2016 18:19

I love my coil.

BoffinMum · 16/11/2016 18:22

Mirena coil, preferably inserted privately by a consultant surgeon in an outpatient appointment, is the Answer To Life.

ILoveDolly · 16/11/2016 18:37

I think you are BU. You are used to the Pill but the GP has weighed up the risks and decided you'd be better off trying an alternative contraceptive option. There are several of these so just go back and have a calm grown up discussion about your fears . The GP will want you to choose something that suits you and will be safer. I found the coil brilliant after years of the pill. It is really so much less hassle

Getskinnyordietrying · 16/11/2016 18:45

DO as I do - bypass your gp and buy directly from Superdrug online doctor!

kali110 · 16/11/2016 18:46

Don't know if op would be allowed the coil due to her family history of clotting.

kali110 · 16/11/2016 18:47

The mirena one, not the non hormone one, that would be an option though.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 16/11/2016 18:52

Not going to lie. That thought has crossed my mind.

OP posts:
AVirginLitTheCandle · 16/11/2016 18:54

The non hormonal one can make periods heavier and more painful. My periods are already pretty painful as it is. I don't want them even more painful Sad

That said, I don't see why a hormonal coil would be a problem. It's not all hormones that are out hence why the GP wants me to have depo.

OP posts:
ColourfulOrangex · 16/11/2016 19:05

I had the depo injection every 3 months, nothing to worry about until you need the injection again but then you are worry free for another 12 weeks

GrandMarmoset · 16/11/2016 19:12

I used to use a diaphragm as my family have a history of clots.

Wolpertinger · 16/11/2016 19:17

If your periods are horrendous, Cerazette is well worth trying. I had 3 months of continuous bleeding, was on the verge of giving it up when a miracle happened and no more bleeding, no more periods - ever!

It's been fantastic, no more pain, no more menstrual migraines, no more flooding, the stuff is a miracle. But I was very very close to giving it up as a bad job.

kali110 · 16/11/2016 19:18

Op don't be stupid and buy them.
There's a reason why you only have a few options.
A few people on here have told you what it's like to actually have a clot.
It's a terrifying and extremely painful experience.
That is if doctors actually catch it.
It can kill you before it's picked up.
Don't take the risk.

kali110 · 16/11/2016 19:19

wol second that. I never have periods on cerazette.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 16/11/2016 19:43

I'm not going to buy them. I just said the thought had crossed my mind. I would never do it though.

emmakc1977 · 16/11/2016 19:44

I had the copper coil as didn't get on with hormone forms of contraception. It was brilliant - periods were a bit heavier but still loved it until I had it taken out and it left me infertile meaning I had to have ivf for second child. My infertility gynocologist told me she would never ever recommend coil to a woman that wants more kids as it can cause scarring through infection (which is what happened to me). I had no symptoms and had it for two years!!!

ThisisMrsNicolaHicklin · 16/11/2016 19:56

So glad to hear you're not going down the road of buying them online, OP. I've been involved in a failed resuscitation attempt of a patient who developed a PE. It's remained the single worst moment of my working life, especially as she was conscious and terrified at the start. It really was the stuff of nightmares.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 16/11/2016 19:57

The injection is evil.

N0tfinished · 16/11/2016 20:05

I had the Nuva Ring for about 2 years. Very easy & didn't feel it at all. I'd recommend. It's the same hormones as pill tho...

kali110 · 16/11/2016 20:13

Op wouldn't be able to have the nuva ring.
this that's awful

TurquoiseDress · 16/11/2016 20:48

OP haven't read the entire thread but you're GP is reluctant to prescribe you the combined pill as you have a first degree relative i.e. Parents or siblings, who has suffered from blood clots.

I'd recommend you visit a family planning/sexual health clinic unless there is a GP specialising in this area within your practice.

TurquoiseDress · 16/11/2016 20:49

Am pretty sure the ring had the same hormones as the combined pill- also same as the patch so you wouldn't be able to have either of those

battgirlatheart · 16/11/2016 22:18

Superdrug do an online doctor for pills
They ask you questions and you have to pay about £20 for three months but easier. Get your blood pressure checked at a chemist etc
