To ask if the salary offered is crap, reasonable, or good?

nicenewone1 · 15/11/2016 14:29

I've been out of work for so long bringing up the family and have lost touch with all reality

It seems that to talk about money amongst friends is not the done thing, and I can't seem to find out how the salary offered compares to others in my area

Don't want to go into too much detail for fear of outing myself, but after deductions I will take home £350 a week for almost full time, 5 days a week Monday to Friday. Does it sound like not a lot, or OK?

I live in the north east if it helps.

Many thanks in advance for any feedback!

People are not being rude, you have asked an unanswerable question, then provided further information which completely changes the information which people have already given - as being self-employed makes most of the answers irrelevant, then you have contradicted yourself and now flounced off! If you are self-employed you don't have an "employer" and you should be paying your own NI.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/11/2016 16:53

Are you actually self employed, or has the company you work for decided that you will be self employed to deny you your employment rights and dodge NI contributions?

It's not up to them to decide, HMRC has a very definite definition and many companies that require it's workers to be 'self employed' are actually breaking the law.

HuskyLover1 · 15/11/2016 17:01

Certainly need a bit more info. I am self employed. I pay my NI and tax myself. I suppose a more relevant question, is whether this level of pay is enough to live comfortably (taking account of your outgoings). You could always take the job but keep looking for another one that pays more??

ElizaSchuyler · 15/11/2016 17:12

It sounds like they are trying to dodge their employers responsibilities. I assume that self employed also means no holiday or statutory sick pay too? And no employers pension contribution?

What you describe (set amount per week, NI deducted, set hours etc does not describe what HMRC say self employment should be.

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/11/2016 17:14

People aren't being rude though, they're pointing out that it's really an almost impossible question because whether a salary is good, bad or indifferent is relative. It would be a great salary for retail, shit for a doctor, and somewhere in between for many other things.

The self employment complicates things more as presumably you will be responsible for tax and NI (so it's not actually after deductions, unless this is based on a figure you've calculated) and there won't be any additional benefits such as a pension which you might get in an actual salaried job. That makes industry even more relevant. I work in financial services and in the bigger companies even entry level staff get a decent amount of extra benefits - a good contributory pension, free private medical care, life insurance, etc etc. So if it was in an industry where those perks are standard then I would expect the self employed rate to be higher to account for their absence.

Toomanydragons · 15/11/2016 17:14

I bet it's an MLM

TheFullMinty · 15/11/2016 17:15

Urgh. Cant answer a question without all the info. Feel free to come back flouncy mcflouncy and all us utterly rude awful people will take more time to help you.

Yamadori · 15/11/2016 17:18

Agree with others - this isn't self-employment at all.

You cannot be self-employed (under a contract) and also have your NI contributions paid by them. It's nonsensical. When you are self-employed you are responsible for your own NI contributions.

TheNaze73 · 15/11/2016 17:18

People aren't being rude. Your thread had so little detail in they were only trying to help by getting the most informed opinion possible.

Babyroobs · 15/11/2016 17:26

I'd say it sounds very good for someone who has been out of paid work for a number of years. As others have said it is comparable to a nurse or teachers starting salary !!

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 15/11/2016 17:27

I agree. Probably MLM.
All sounds a bit dodgy OP.

How would saying what it is out you. Surely there are loads of people going back to work after a break in most sectors?

IneedAdinosaurNickname · 15/11/2016 17:30

Sounds good to me, I earn £270 per week after tax etc and live in the south East.

But as others have said it depends what the job is. It would be a crap wage if you're a brain surgeon.

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/11/2016 17:32

This is as bad as the poster yesterday who wanted recommendations about where to live but would give absolutely no information whatsoever about what the wanted, what the budget was, what their priorities were, where they needed to be for work...

IEatCannibals · 15/11/2016 17:33

It's not selling aloe Vera shite is it?

Capricorn76 · 15/11/2016 17:34

Sounds like Forever Living. Did they call you a mumtreprenuer?

idontlikealdi · 15/11/2016 17:36

Oh god is it FL?

Toomanydragons · 15/11/2016 17:36

I would be more than happy to be proved wrong (because it would be awful if true).

but I feel like this might have been set up so people will go, oh yeah sounds great, what is it, then people will be PM'd etc with details of an amazing business opportunity.

There is a new one doing the rounds, and this stuff is literally everywhere running up to Christmas!

Toomanydragons · 15/11/2016 17:39

Also just to make it clear, if it's an MLM, then you would be lucky to even be earning that amount in a month... Or even a year.

AyeAmarok · 15/11/2016 17:39

I live in the SE and used to work in a call centre on that salary. 24k is fairly standard for admin based jobs.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 15/11/2016 17:45

If it's self employment then they don't deduct tax or insurance - you have yo register for self assessment. If the people you work for are paying your NI then you are employed by them and entitled to holiday pay etc

You need to double check with them, and if you are self employed then they legally can't take anything out of your salary because they can't pay NI on your behalf (and if it's dodgy you'll be hit with the bill come April after already "paying" out of your wage)

But to answer your original question - £350 is decent for an unskilled position, especially with those hours.

Therealloislane · 15/11/2016 18:02

If it's slimming world consultancy don't do it!

YelloDraw · 15/11/2016 18:23

MLM 100%

anotheronebitthedust · 15/11/2016 20:02

Wow that's high mrskoala. It's about £14k for call centre/council admin jobs round here. Lower living costs though but still a big difference!

conkerpods · 19/11/2016 17:05

What's MLM?
