Aibu to not want the waiting room to know my name?

New system introduced at my doctors today, each patients name is flashed up when it's your turn to be seen.
Aibu to feel uncomfortable about it? For context I am shy, socially anxious and I admit a bit paranoid at times but it just feels a bit disarming for everyone to know who you are when you've not volunteered the info yourself?
I do actually sound a bit U don't I?🙈 But maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way?

My name is never pronounced correctly; I much prefer to see it pop up on screen. Then I walk in and say "I'm sugar, nice to meet you".

RachelRagged · 14/11/2016 11:48

Wu Tu Fang Grin Grin

I realise its moved on to 4 pages but your first comment.

I can't recall a time, personally, when our doctors did NOT have the name thing in its red lettering informing who is going in next . Even pre the digital age my name, and others, was simply called out .

Helenluvsrob · 14/11/2016 11:49

GP here ...

OP I appreciate your concerns. We used to have the numbered "dog tag" type discs and you booked in and got your number. This was beautifully anonymous. I sort of wish we could go back to it. However it takes out a level of safety that is very helpful- if you use a self check in desk it only checks you in ( our goes on gender and year of birth then says " thank you mrs smith you are booked in with Dr Broen at 10 am" ).

If there has been an error in Booking you into the system eg Mrs Smyth has been put in your slot not Mrs Smith, it is picked up,similarly William Smith aged 50 and William Smith aged 5 will be sorted out.

I think that's really important too, but not to diss your concerns about having your name fashed up for the world or yelled over a tannoy

Chinlo · 14/11/2016 11:50

I've lived in a fair few places and never had a number system. It always used to be calling out the name, now it's either calling out or flashing the name on the screen.

Either way, it's not an issue. OP you are definitely being extremely anxious and paranoid, I'm afraid.

paxillin · 14/11/2016 11:53

Ours just call out. I am foreign, my name gets murdered.

I'd like a display. As it is I have to answer to anything from Poxilox to Phyllis.

QueenLizIII · 14/11/2016 11:55

No one cares who you are. They are at the GP with their own problems.

This is a new system? Both the doctor surgeries in my area have operated this system for at least 15yrs, if not longer!
Before that they just yelled your name which gives you precisely the same outcome.

HmmmmBop · 14/11/2016 12:02

Are you Rumpelstiltskin, OP?

Grin you have won the internet!

Kel1234 · 14/11/2016 12:03

Every doctors I've ever been to has that system. It's never bothered me

Optimist1 · 14/11/2016 12:04

On a dull, rainy Monday Badgers has brightened my day considerably ... Suspicious discharge Room 6 - snigger!

bimbobaggins · 14/11/2016 12:06

Anytime I am at a surgery for an appointment I am not in the least bit interested in anyone else's name , flashing on a screen or shouted out and I can't for the life of me think that anyone else would be either.

MrsHathaway · 14/11/2016 12:06

It's your name, it's very purpose is to identify you and distinguish you from others. That's literally what your name is for so yes YABVU

Sorry, but this has tickled me. Dare you to post it on a few Baby Names threads for a giggle...

On topic, I know what the OP means about feeling a bit weird about it but honestly I can't think of a better system. All these tickets and tags and diamonds are far too complicated. People go to the doctor for a million reasons, most of which are very dull. Anyone gossiping about that or asking you probing questions deserves the Paddington Bear stare or a non-committal "Oh, you know."

So someone knows you're seeing the doctor. Well, you're in the waiting room and you go into a doctor's room and come out with a green slip ... I think that's more obvious than flashing your name on the screen!

ARumWithAView · 14/11/2016 12:07

I also have a foreign name and much prefer the text-based system. My surname gets pronounced with such random variations that sometimes I don't register it's mine until it's repeated several times. At least once, I have quietly tutted at the nerve of this Mrs Blurbleblar, who's made an appointment then buggered off. Bloody timewasters.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/11/2016 12:08

Surely unless really unusual name most people forget it whether on screen or called out within a minute if not less.

timelytess · 14/11/2016 12:08

I hate it but it does make sure the right person goes to the right room.

Chinlo · 14/11/2016 12:10

If there's anybody there that knows you, then they'll see you anyway, right? And if they don't know you, then seeing your name on the flashing screen is going to mean nothing to them.

So... I don't get it.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/11/2016 12:11

Also gotta be better than the intercom at my doctors that often can't be heard over noise and when it can is so mumbled it sounds like the doctors are under the sea.

Rachel0Greep · 14/11/2016 12:19

DP now has to go to the local Chemist for an eye examination. These used to be done in the hospital. There is a good chance of being recognised by people we know..

Not that favourably impressed..

I'm curious about this?

Rachel0Greep · 14/11/2016 12:20

Same here. Grin

MikeUniformMike · 14/11/2016 12:23

The dental surgery I go to uses DoB to index people, so when you go there or if you phone they always ask what is your DoB. I reckon loads of people have the same DoB as me, I've even met some, but my name is unusual if not unique.
I hate giving out what I consider to be quite private information over the phone at work or in a busy open plan office (and it makes me feel old).

e1y1 · 14/11/2016 12:23

YABU - it's your name - how/what else are people supposed to call you by?

I'd understand if your name, DOB and what you're seeing the Doctor were being flashed up, but other than that, no.

My old doctors have just brought this system in.

Puddington · 14/11/2016 12:25

I'm quite socially anxious/generally anxious and I get in a bit of a tizzy having to make doctors' appointments and go to the doctor in general (even for very minor things) but I have to say this is one thing that doesn't really bother me. I don't find that other people really take any notice if it's not their name, and I'd hate it much more if someone actually came out and called your name instead of it being on a screen.

SylvieB74 · 14/11/2016 12:25

You're right, also in mine when they give your prescription you have to say your address. Then when you go and pick up the tablets you have to tell them your address. I sometimes think any weirdo could be there and now they know my name and also where me and my kids live!

Roundrobin1234 · 14/11/2016 12:25

I'm not sure why your name being called out or flashed up makes a difference. After all, if anyone in the waiting room knows you, then they're going to say hi! Unless of course you book into the doctors under your MN user name. So that's what Ohdearducks looks like....
