To suspect my nanny is drugging my child?

I have a nanny for my son who is now eighteen months old, she has been with us since he was ten months old. I recently noticed that the level of the emergency bottle of Calpol had gone down dramatically and I know we have not given him any. I put a mark on the bottle to see if it would go down any further, and sure enough, it has. She is the only other person in the house. Is it possible for Calpol to evaporate over time, or is she giving it to him and not telling me/writing it in the book? If so, would IBU to sack her on the spot for endangering his health, in that we could have come home from work and given him another dose without realising? I suppose she could be taking it herself, at a stretch - I just think this is a pretty serious allegation and I don't want to upset the relationship by suggesting she is giving it to him if it can just dry up anyway?

What a load of old tosh!!!

Magicpaintbrush · 13/11/2016 22:55

Having recently read up a bit on Calpol it turns out it contains substances that are banned in Austria, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the US, France and Australia.

In case anyone is interested this article about it is quite interesting: www.diaryofafirstchild.com/2010/04/20/calpol-what-every-parent-should-know/

Not sure what I think about it all.

It doesn't evaporate from the bottle.

How much has gone over what period of time? Are we talking about a dose once a week, once a day, several a day?

Absolutely this is a big issue if she has been giving paracetamol without valid reason and/ or without informing you.

I would arrange a time to sit down and discuss with her. Ask her directly how she responds if ahe thinks he needs medicine. Ask how often she gives paracetamol. Question where the missing medication has gone.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 13/11/2016 22:57

She is probably squirreling your Calpol into a little flask to take away home!!!

LouBlue1507 · 13/11/2016 22:59

Omg just ask your nanny ffs! She might have just accidentally spilt the bottle! I know I've done it a couple of times while faffing with the cork and syringe! Angry
I can't believe you'd just assume she's 'drugging' your child! Paranoid much? Hmm

LagunaBubbles · 13/11/2016 22:59

I would assume some has been spilled, not used on your child, the fact it's crossed your mind kind of shows you don't trust her.

TiredAndDeadly · 13/11/2016 22:59

I don't think a bottle of calpol is a ridiculous amount tbh. Was it finished in a day? A week?

Why were you checking the calpol?

If you're not sure in your nanny then you don't need to have a file of 'dirt' on her before confronting......she's looking after your DC!

If you're concerned then just ask her!

I actually do take a swig of the kids calpol. It seems to work much faster than tablets I find probably because it can get into the blood faster than a tablet that needs to dissolve.

SausageSoda · 13/11/2016 23:00

That's interesting Magic. Didn't know that it contained ingredients banned in other countries. My HV/GP actively encourage the use of if after vaccinations.

I've given my 4 month old DD maybe 5-6 doses of calpol in the past 2 months. Not sure what i'll going forward.

Scrumptiousbears · 13/11/2016 23:00

Have to say I was getting some Calpol from a bottle and the bloody stopper fell out. Calpol all over the bloody cream carpet. I was livid.

Another point... Why are you randomly checking the calpol? Or is your DC actually poorly and you've gone to give them some?

Cucumber5 · 13/11/2016 23:02

It's a safe guarding issue. There should be a log of all drugs given and you should be made aware on each occasion.

Calpol dose is 15 mg/kg not 60!

roundaboutthetown · 13/11/2016 23:05

? The article linked by Magic says Calpol is pink. Not in our house it isn't. Where are people buying pink Calpol?!

Underchipsandpeas · 13/11/2016 23:06

Ooops you're right! It's 60mg Max! Good job I check religiously and never rely on guesses! But well spotted! Star

TiredAndDeadly · 13/11/2016 23:06

Where is calpol not pink?

TiredAndDeadly · 13/11/2016 23:06

Ibuprofen is white

Calpol pink

OutragedKoala · 13/11/2016 23:07

YABU to post this under such an inflammatory description, and sound unhinged if this is a genuine thread, which I doubt it is. Also agree with PP if you're paying her top dollar she can afford her own bottle of calpol.

Meadows76 · 13/11/2016 23:07

Sugar free one is white

Rainingchocolate · 13/11/2016 23:07

Could she have given it to a nanny friends charge at some time or another? Say they were on a play date and were taken poorly?

sallysparrow157 · 13/11/2016 23:07

And you can get paracetamol suspension that doesn't contain the colourings/flavourings/sweeteners that calpol does, just go for generic paracetamol suspension - cheaper than branded stuff too
