AIBU to find Trump's victory physically painful?

There are people walking around laughing about it, but I don't find this funny. It's awful.

I couldn't sleep last night.

This is a horrible, horrible man.

He's a misogynist who is guilty of sexual assault and body shaming women.

He's a racist who wants to build walls.

He's a rich, white man who represents everything that's wrong in our world.

Why? Why why why did this happen.

And you can hate Hillary or love her, but you've got to admit she was wayyyy more qualified than Trump.

The fact that a qualified woman lost to a disgusting misogybist is 100 steps back for women everywhere

I am not someone who would ever vote based on gender (I wouldn't vote for Sarah Palin just because she's a woman), on this occasion I'm disappointed we didn't get our First Female President of the United States.

I know it's not just about gender and many people dislike Hillary (I respect that totally)

But this could have been a historic moment that would have set a precedent for young girls all over the world.

Instead, we have to now explain to our daughters why a man who thinks its ok to "grab p*ssies" has won over a qualified female candidate.

I'm so disappointed.

My 9 yo said rather grumpy, "Great, so I'm going to have to live through WW3. He's a crazy man!". they've all been talking about it at school. Quite the politically engaged group!

We hadn't talked about it at home at all. Feel a bit neglectful in that respect. It would have been a good opportunity to discuss both candidates.

FranHastings · 09/11/2016 11:50

*grumpily

user1471525261 · 09/11/2016 12:04

I completely agree. I woke up about 4 this morning, checked my phone and couldn't get back to sleep I felt that nervous. I feel so sad about it, it's so wrong that he's won with all the abhorrent things he's said and done and when HRC is so much more qualified than him. I just hope that him getting away with his words and actions doesn't set a precedent for other people but I suppose that's wishful thinking

Squeegle · 09/11/2016 12:09

It's depressing in the extreme. And for those who think he won't affect us, let's just remember that he will be in charge of the US foreign policy. He will have much more leeway there than with domestic policy. He will have access to all the intelligence from all the different agencies. And he will have the nuclear codes.

flippinada · 09/11/2016 12:13

You're not the only person to have a strong reaction OP. I'm actually quite envious of people who aren't bothered. I'd love not to be bothered!

Dulra · 09/11/2016 12:15

YANBU I have a serious stress headache. My 9 year old asked "does that mean he'll bomb Ireland because xx xx at school said he would" it is the talk of the playground. Reminds me of the first gulf war when I was on school and the nuns had us praying there'd be no world war.

I don't think people get how serious this is.

Lottapianos · 09/11/2016 12:24

'I don't think people get how serious this is.'

Very true. A lot of people just don't do thinking and don't do empathy either

I'm holding it together because I'm at work today but will be having a good sob later. I cannot even bear to think of how Hillary must be feeling. Her concession speech when it comes will be heartbreaking

ModernToss · 09/11/2016 12:28

I'm dreading Hillary's concession speech. I feel so awful for her, and agree that it will be heartbreaking.

I'm sure it's been posted elsewhere on mumsnet, but Angela Merkel's message of congratulations to Trump was excellent:

Germany and America are bound together by values - democracy, freedom, respecting the rule of law, people's dignity regardless of their origin, the colour of their skin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views.

On the basis of these values, I am offering to work closely with the future President of the United States Donald Trump.

I'm quite sure she wanted Clinton, but she managed to make her point pretty damn well there.

Lottapianos · 09/11/2016 12:32

Hadn't seen that from Merkel. Nicely put.

GabsAlot · 09/11/2016 12:40

she wont get them values shes also a woman who he depsises- like the rest of us
we're secondclass citizens to him

mummytime · 09/11/2016 12:42

in four years he will be gone true BUT with a republican Senate, and House of Representatives, and Trump nominating a few Supreme Court Justices over the next few years (never mind more Gerrymandering of voting areas), it will have very long term consequences.
It does affect everyone - stock markets have fallen already. Climate change will affect everyone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/11/2016 12:43

very nicely said Merkel.

buckingfrolicks · 09/11/2016 12:53

i'm in a state of shock. Cannot believe it.

Having learned my lesson with Brexit, I put £50 on trump to win, thinking superstitiously that if I bet on Trump he'd lose. Fuck me - now I have £250 I really really REALLY didn't ever want. I thought it would take some of the pain out of this kind of result but it hasn't, it's just made me realise how scared I am, and betting (which I have not done for 30 years) was kind of voodoo for me.

AutumnLeavesAgain · 09/11/2016 12:58

Bucking I was tempted to do the same but the old Methodist indoctrination took hold as I passed the bookies. Enjoy your winnings as best you can.

ElphabaTheGreen · 09/11/2016 13:05

Bravo Merkel. How to say, 'Don't even THINK about starting anything, you bigoted fuck' diplomatically.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/11/2016 14:21

I thought about betting, but worried about ill gotten gains, I now wish I'd done it so I could give the winnings to support refugees. That would have had small sense of justice about it.

IreallyKNOWiamright · 09/11/2016 16:21

I noticed on the news it said alot of men voted for trump. I thought well that isn't suprising. It seems that women in time will loose more rights.

Roussette · 09/11/2016 16:45

DixieWishbone in a bizarre way you give me hope. You are American and you feel all this and it's good to hear. It's what I've been banging on about for about a month on a Poitics thread on here but I've been disagreed with and patronised by a couple of posters (not claig, the threads starter) but by others.

All that you say I agree with. I don't feel physically sick as such but I am worried to hell. 2 of my now young adult kids contacted me this morning. One of them fell asleep on the sofa at about 4am this morning and is sending me lots of articles and information and we are in total agreement. The other child (also adult) also completely agrees and the link below is a picture is what the result would be if all the young people in the US had voted? Is this true?

She told me she was down and depressed about it all this morning, both of them are and I am with them on that. My picture gives me hope that DT will be relatively powerless, this is the map of what could have been.

AIBU to find Trump's victory physically painful?
flippinada · 09/11/2016 16:50

Ok, apologies for slight TMI and bringing down the tone of the thread but for anyone who is worried about the strength of their reaction, get this..

I actually started my period today, 2 weeks early. Not even kidding.

bucking enjoy your winnings, at least you've got something positive out of the day!

WLF46 · 09/11/2016 18:05

It's democracy. One person equals one vote, everybody is equal at the ballot box. It is astonishing that Clinton and the Democrats fucked up so badly, but if they can screw up winning AGAINST TRUMP OF ALL PEOPLE, it's hard to have much faith in her ability to be president.

ElphabaTheGreen · 09/11/2016 21:01

But WLF one vote has a different value depending on the state you're voting in. If nothing else, this election has shown how shit the electoral college system is.

And people voted FOR Trump. The option for a protest vote against Hillary was there in the form of independents, but that's not the route people took. It wouldn't have been different with Sanders or any other Democrat.

StealthPolarBear · 09/11/2016 21:16

" ElphabaTheGreen

Bravo Merkel. How to say, 'Don't even THINK about starting anything, you bigoted fuck' diplomatically."

Brilliant :o

PitilessYank · 10/11/2016 04:18

I am just finishing my 16 hour work day and I literally did not smile once today. I am typically very cheerful at work and at home. I was slightly heartened, however, watching videos of the protests taking place in Boston, NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, etc.

I am starting to think that we need to weigh votes based on age, with more weight going to the votes of younger people. Clinton won almost every state in the 18-25 age range. It is grotesque that a bunch of old fucking farts have forced Trump on the next generation. It is a international embarassment and we in the US look like a bunch of jerks right now.

areyoubeingserviced · 10/11/2016 05:23

I actually felt a bit down yesterday. I can't even bear to watch the news.
I am just hoping it will not be as bad as everyone thinks it will be.

CustardShoes · 10/11/2016 08:38

One person equals one vote, everybody is equal at the ballot box.

The US Presidential election system doesn't work that way. I suggest you do a bit of reading about it.

Secretary Clinton won the popular vote, but not the Electoral College.
