Tesco - what would you expect from this?

Ordered ds his birthday gift a month ago, we where told the the release date was Friday 4th Nov, we called MIL while in the store, to ask if she was available for it to be delivered to her property, she's said she had annual leave to use and would book the day off to wait for it to come, Friday 4th, it didn't arrive.

SIL waited in all day today incase it was being delivered today as we could not get through to Tesco on the phone and the nearest Tesco to us is 40 mins drive away, so couldn't just pop in either.

I've called 20 mins ago and we have been told the incorrect release date, 8 days after ds's birthday... Angry our receipt and everything says 4th Nov...

I've told them I will have to speak to dh, however as ds wants this gift, I cannot see us being able to cancel it, and Tesco also cannot help as the product doesn't get released until after ds birthday.

However I feel as if MIL has wasted an annual leave day and SIL a days time also, and also we can't give ds his gift until after his birthday.

I've also looked at the alternative options however they have them out of stock and I could have bought them while in the store the day we originally went, however we were sold this product due to ds interests.

What would you do, would you expect a good will guesture, or would you just say it was one of those things?

Can you give him one of his Christmas presents on his birthday then save the mystery gift for Christmas?

MsJamieFraser · 08/11/2016 05:52

The release of the product was ALWAYS the 18th of Nov, the staff member was misinformed, who then misinformed us,!
When I spoke to Tesco over the phone the manager knew straight away the release date I'd been given was incorrect, and that's without giving him my order details.

He thought it was odd my receipt and everything showed the 4th, however I will phone today to ask for it to be delivered to the larger 24 hour store.

Me and dh have jam packed schedules, it not as easy to just drive 40 minutes away to collect a parcel, we both work full time long hours, also run a football club and DC are in serveral after school clubs.
We are a very busy hectic family during the week, time is very limited.
Anyway Ds is out his bath now, I've got to get him seen to.

Oh dear.... :)

How do people that work all say get anything delivered though, nothing I order comes on the expected date, it's usually early but at this time of year disappears into an abyss and can appear at anytime up to a week late. Fortunately I work from home so am usually here, but when I didn't I had it delivered to mum's address, or collected smaller items from the sorting office, which opens at 7am, including Saturday. Even now I often redirect a delivery with DPD to the local Spa shop, as they never come when they are meant to.

Working within logistics and distribution, I know it happens.

Bruce02 · 08/11/2016 06:52

It's just one of those things. You were given an incorrect date. It happens.

What is that you want you mention that mil and sil waited in. Mil chose to use annual leave and then sil chose to stay in all day today just in case. Even though you had no indication it was coming today.

I am quite a regular complainer to large retailers when stuff like this happens. This doesn't strike me as a particularly serious mistake but worth a try. Send a letter outlining your disappointment at the error etc, you may get a voucher. I usually do.

EstellaHavisham · 08/11/2016 07:22

I'm sure that given the correct counselling and with the fullness of time you will get through this.

SerendipityPhenomenon · 08/11/2016 07:31

It makes no difference if I cancel my order and buy elsewhere, as it makes no difference to the outcome, as the product is not being released until the 18th of Nov, no one will be able to get it before this date, even if they have purchased it now, like I have done over a month ago.

Where it would make a difference is in delivery arrangements. Amazon, for instance, will almost certainly have a collection point in a local shop near to you.

dementedpixie · 08/11/2016 07:50

Just because an item has a release date, doesn't mean it will arrive on that date. Surely the system gives the release date anyway, not the member of staff who served you the first time, so I imagine that the release date was pushed back. Do click and collect and then you can collect it at your leisure and no one needs to take time off

Trills · 08/11/2016 07:58

YANBU to be annoyed that you were given the wrong date.

YAB a bit silly to take annual leave to wait in for a parcel though. A dining table, yes. A parcel, no.

If your neighbours won't take in parcels, and you can't have them delivered to work, and there isn't an appropriate "safe place" to leave them, you're better off buying from a supplier that uses Collect + or similar.

There are too many ways in which a parcel might not arrive on the correct day for taking annual leave to be a workable plan.

GingerLDN · 08/11/2016 09:50

Could you save the thing that's late for his Christmas and give him something you were going to get him for Christmas for his bday instead? Just an idea although might not work for you.

ShotsFired · 08/11/2016 10:01

If old enough to be getting expensive gadgets, surely your kid's old enough to understand that it is coming, just a few days later than planned?

Token present to unwrap on birthday, followed by Big Unwrap when it arrives? Can't really see any issue here apart from annoyance at the manufacturer playing silly buggers.

Agree with pp about Tesco telling you what they knew at the time, which was subsequently changed.
