Tesco - what would you expect from this?

Ordered ds his birthday gift a month ago, we where told the the release date was Friday 4th Nov, we called MIL while in the store, to ask if she was available for it to be delivered to her property, she's said she had annual leave to use and would book the day off to wait for it to come, Friday 4th, it didn't arrive.

SIL waited in all day today incase it was being delivered today as we could not get through to Tesco on the phone and the nearest Tesco to us is 40 mins drive away, so couldn't just pop in either.

I've called 20 mins ago and we have been told the incorrect release date, 8 days after ds's birthday... Angry our receipt and everything says 4th Nov...

I've told them I will have to speak to dh, however as ds wants this gift, I cannot see us being able to cancel it, and Tesco also cannot help as the product doesn't get released until after ds birthday.

However I feel as if MIL has wasted an annual leave day and SIL a days time also, and also we can't give ds his gift until after his birthday.

I've also looked at the alternative options however they have them out of stock and I could have bought them while in the store the day we originally went, however we were sold this product due to ds interests.

What would you do, would you expect a good will guesture, or would you just say it was one of those things?

That was meant to say tescos stupid phone 😳

bloodyteenagers · 07/11/2016 23:04

Look at other websites to see if it can be ordered from there. Amazon deliver to lockers, post offices and Sainsbury's as part of their click and collect thing.

But ultimately, the fault is with you. When you was thinking about getting this mysterious thing, you should have checked the release dates yourself. It's not the stores fault you cannot be bothered to travel 40 minutes to the store. And yes I have travelled more than this in the past to collect stuff. Googled the area to see what else was around and did a few things and picked up the thing on the way back.

pmama · 07/11/2016 23:10

well, I know that it is a birthday present - but hey, it would be received, and a few days without it is not the worst ever thing happened on Earth. Once I pre ordered a PC game for my husband - it was available about a month later than his birthday, but he was happy (I made a funny card in the style of the game, and it was a well welcomed surprise that way as well).

MsJamieFraser · 07/11/2016 23:11

I'm not being "cagey" about the item as it's irrelevant and not what my post is about.

It makes no difference if I cancel my order and buy elsewhere, as it makes no difference to the outcome, as the product is not being released until the 18th of Nov, no one will be able to get it before this date, even if they have purchased it now, like I have done over a month ago.

My AIBU wasn't about how or where I'm doing to get it delivered, it was about being told an incorrect date and having family members taking annual leave, or waiting around for a delivery that was never coming, as it's not even been released to the public yet.

If it's something like a game or DVD no one has to wait in for it! It can be posted through the door. I would expect an apology and that's all.

CotswoldStrife · 07/11/2016 23:14

OP, did you know that the release date was later than Tesco said? It's not clear if you didn't know or thought that Tesco were getting it earlier than everyone else.

While you could make the point that your paperwork says 4th November, as the game item is not available yet there isn't a lot that can be done. You could cancel and get a different version (Amazon could deliver in time).

I don't think they will do anything about the day's holiday, but you could ask about not hearing about the expected delivery (I know the item wasn't actually available but if Tesco had booked something for that date surely it would show up on their system?)

Queenbean · 07/11/2016 23:15

If you won't tell anyone what it is I suppose we shall have to guess

I reckon it's a rare bird of prey which is being smuggled from another country

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 07/11/2016 23:19

why a load of fuss over nothing! just click and collect fgs!

Nospringflower · 07/11/2016 23:24

I'm with you on this! It's crap service both giving you the wrong date in the first place and then not telling you it wasn't being delivered. I'd be annoyed but can't see much being done about it.

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 07/11/2016 23:24

Its probably something that a child shouldn't have and that's why op is not telling because theuy don't wnt everyone saying they shouldnt be buying it for their kid.

Watchdogs Special edition or COD or GTA:O

MakeMyWineADouble · 07/11/2016 23:26

It is annoying when dates change but in my experience when purchasing they always put a disclaimer somewhere saying that it is possible. I haven't been in retail for a while but when I was we weren't able to order something for delivery before the release date so it's likely tescos didn't know when you purchased it wouldn't be here on time. All that said I think it's bad that an email wasn't sent informing you of the changes I do think when changing a set delivery date there should be communication whatever the reason! I doubt there is anything you can do about it but it's not unreasonable to be fustrated with them.

bumsexatthebingo · 07/11/2016 23:27

Well op I can see why you're annoyed that your mil had to take a day off work and wait in for something that was never going to come. Even though they made a cock up with the date they would have known it wasn't out for delivery that day and could have given you a heads up to save your MIL having to wait in all day.
If it's not a Tesco item could you take your custom elsewhere?

JustWoman · 07/11/2016 23:36

If it said the 4th on your paperwork from Tesco then that's the date they'll have been given, if it was a case of one member of staff getting the date wrong, the paperwork would still have said the correct date. It sounds like the date will have been the 4th but has changed after you pre ordered, it happens and isn't much Tesco can do about that.

I've had it happen a few times but have usually recieved a notification about the change in release date, giving me time to rearrange days off etc to be in for collection or cancel order and buy elsewhere if prices have changed since pre ordering.

It sounds like you only found out release date has changed because you chased them up, that's the bit I'd complain about. Release dates changing isn't uncommon, but in my experience, it's unusual not to be alerted to it.

I know you can't get it any earlier but it might be worth checking prices at other retailers again as they do change, it might be worth cancelling the order with tesco and going elsewhere.

Is ds old enough to understand and be told his gift is coming a little after his bday? That's what I'd do if it's a much wanted gift, if he's too young to understand I buy something else and keep the pre ordered thing for Christmas. Or buy a cheap gift and give him this on arrival.

For console games, it's worth checking small independant stores, you can prer in those just like the big stores, but they don't have as many customers and usually ring you to let you in it's arrived. My local game shop is brilliant as he lets me take the game as soon as he gets delivery, which is usually a day or two before launch, we had Mario kart wii u and pvz2 a week before official release :)

MsJamieFraser · 07/11/2016 23:40

Cot we didn't even know anything about the dates or the product tbh, we eventually purchased, the staff member upselled the item to us, we went in to buy X, asking for advice on the product, this was when the staff member "sold" us Y, with it being limited edition, extended warranties, free gift etc... also the new version and we would get it in time for ds birthday etc... and all at £35 cheaper than we where originally going to pay, evidently too good to be true.

He also said he had purchased one himself, and was looking forward to enjoying it. Hence we had no reason to question the release date.

pmama you've given me a fab idea, I could do this for ds also, might even do a box within a box type one, I'm sure I've got different size boxes in the loft.

It won't fit through the letter box, it's an electrical item that needs to be signed for.

Again with this, I can't just click or collect, I could buy it elsewhere, however I still would not be able to get my hands on it until after the 18th Nov, as it's not out until then

I'm not being elusive about the product either, just can't be arsed with the following comments about spending X amount on a child's birthday so close to xmas, type comments.

My AIBU was about the service I received from Tesco, none of all this in between.

Anyway I've finished my conference call and I've updated you lot, I'm going to bed I have a 5am wake up Sad

Just in case it is the Pokemon game, it doesn't release in Europe until 23rd. The 18th is the date for Australia and North America.

JustWoman · 07/11/2016 23:44

Sorry OP, ignore my last post.

MsJamieFraser · 07/11/2016 23:46

Than you all for replying also, it's going to go in the pile of "one of those things" however annoying the experience has been.

OP posts:
bumsexatthebingo · 07/11/2016 23:46

Well there's nothing you can do to get it earlier if its not released. But I would get it elsewhere due to the shitty customer service.

MakeMyWineADouble · 07/11/2016 23:51

Might still be worth having a look else we're. Tescos arent comming across like they really know what's going on I would see what other retailers are offering.

Wishforsnow · 07/11/2016 23:52

Sounds like you got good customer service but the date may be out by a couple of days. Can't see the issue

whirlwinds · 07/11/2016 23:54

I assume it may be the nintendo, but regardless of what it may be the best way around it is to give the gift in advance so your ds can see what is on its way and you can start a countdown towards that day. Release dates change but normally those I have shopped with will call informing us about the changes and if we still wish to keep the order aso. The fact that someone took time off from work is not Tescos problem as there is many options to ensure people get their items, but you can address them about the change of date and that you were not informed about this change.

bumsexatthebingo · 07/11/2016 23:54

Would you really feel like you got good customer service if you waited in all day for something that didn't come?

Helloitsme87 · 08/11/2016 05:10

I would ever expect my mil to use a day of annual leave to wait in for an item I could have just had delivered to the store......

MsJamieFraser · 08/11/2016 05:26

I never expected anything hello maybe you missed the word ASK!

We asked MIL, and where MIL informed us that she needed to use The rest of her annual leave before she goes away for a holiday over the Christmas period.

Again this is not relevant to the AIBU asked.

OP posts:
icelollycraving · 08/11/2016 05:32

I find it a bit odd to get someone to use annual leave to wait for a parcel.
I work in retail. Everyone wants a bloody goodwill gesture these days.
The move in release date is out of their control. Their communication wasn't great but not worthy of complaint.
If your son is old enough for this gift I'm sure he's old enough to understand it's on it's way.
Yabu.
