To think a year 7 project should be just that

DD has come home from school in tears today as she thinks her project that she did over the school holidays is wrong.

She was told to do a 3D model of a plant cell. Which she has done - to a year 7 level.

It's due in tomorrow and I just caught her up trying to add more to it- she says most of her friends have added things that she doesn't know what they are .

From the sound of it they have just googled plant cell and then copied A level type details onto it.

Should DD have done this too? I've told her that hers is fine - the teacher hasn't taught her that much detail so she doesn't need it!

AIBU?

What happens to those students who don't know which is the correct version of stationery to use?

Burn them at the steak!

DD1 made a jelly, added sweets to show the cell bits (as shown in your first pic). Got a headteachers mention Halo.

I did something very similar at degree level. I would definitely say that if they had expected more than she gave then they're not teaching her at the level she should be.

My year 7 child had this exact homework recently and did the same as your dd and it was the school expected, they did not expect anymore detail than what your dd has done.

The food based ones are my favourite not least because they don't spend weeks cluttering up my lab and gathering dust

I've got a science degree and don't recognise some of the things on that second pic Confused
I've seen work from sixth formers where they've basically (badly) copied a pic they found on the internet and have no understanding of any of it. I'd be much more impressed with something which had less detail (but enough) but time had been taken and it was understood.
Creativity may not be a fundamentally 'scientific' skill, but at year 7 I would like to think kids are still working on good presentation as much as factual information.

I am hating all the poster and project homework, it's not my DS's thing he'd rather write an essay than do a power point or poster. Did the cell model in lego that was actually fun, lots of his peers did cakes. Being driven to distraction by his Adt hwk at the mo, they have to do a 3D model of a building they've designed in card based on research of architectural styles.... He seems to want to create his own interpretation of the Guggenheim Bilboa with all sorts of fancy shapes and is recovering from a broken right hand so precise measuring and cutting isn't going well. As PP's have said it's a good op to teach him about expectations and limitations..... And that it takes years to train as an architect.!

Well teacher was impressed with DDs project - so she needn't have worried really.

She did say that the teacher said there was no need for the extras some had added. It she was impressed with them all.

She also said someone did a cake version and they all got a piece!

So panic over !

She got a house point too Smile

Also had parents evening and teacher said that DD was a lovely , kind and conscientious girl who works hard and strives to do her best so I'm not worried on that front any more either .

I know it's probably a whole other thread but with regards to parents evening - I always seems to wait about 20 minutes for the parent in front to finish and then when it comes to discussing DD it's all over very quickly.

Should I be asking more? I always feel like I should get more out of it but today the teacher actually said there's nothing more to say really.

What should I be asking?

I need to start a new thread really don't I! It's just I feel like I'm missing out on a long discussion- maybe it's a good thing?
