WIBU to buy this wedding dress?

We're getting married next year and I've found my dream dress on Shillas, at a really affordable price. The dress is beautiful and just what I wanted but I'm a bit Confused at ordering a wedding dress online.

The reviews on their website about the dress itself are all really positive, and there's quite a few of them. But when I looked for reviews of Shillas as a company, they are overwhelmingly negative.

i'm in a bit of a pickle as it's the perfect dress but now I'm worried that the company are a bit shit.
WIBU to chance it?

OP do you have a Wed2B near you? Have heard great things about them and will be going there for mine. All designer dresses but max price is £500! Grin

I totally empathise with wanting to choose a wedding dress and be able to stop worrying about it.

If you start a thread on Style and Beauty with a title making it clear you need help wedding dress shopping and an OP making clear your size, likes, budget then lots of helpful Mners will link dresses. Then you will know where to go to try on dresses you like the look of and within a few weeks you'll have the dress in your wardrobe.
That worked for me!

JammyGem · 05/11/2016 22:52

I'd not heard of Wed2B, I've just checked and there's one not too far from here - will have to go check it out!

I think the trouble is that most of the bridal shops around here and really expensive, so they have very little in my budget. Which is why I was looking at online... Will definitely search for cheaper shops though, and actually try the dresses on!

If that really is your dream dress, can you reverse image search it as Mistoffeelees says and then look for the real Mori Lee version on preloved?

Ice3 · 05/11/2016 22:56

They might not be the style you are looking for but I ended up getting mine from Phase Eight. They have some lovely wedding dresses for £4-500 and have good sales regularly.

£96 from eBay. I was more than happy with it Smile

HIre a beautiful dress. Google hire places there's am amazing one in Cardiff I know. Don't waste your money on this Chinese copy.

ThePinkOcelot · 05/11/2016 23:40

After reading those reviews, I certainly wouldn't buy from them! Shocking!!
BTW, I bought my wedding dress from eBay. £75 bnwt Mori Lee. Loved it.

LegoLady95 · 06/11/2016 00:00

My wedding dress costumes less than £100 from lightinthebox.com. It was beautiful, fit perfectly and really well made. I went on to order 6 bridesmaids dresses. Just make sure you have plenty of time in case there are any problems. I used the site on recommendation from a good friend

fizzingmum · 06/11/2016 02:05

A dress like this for £150 seems too good to be true. And I work on the basis that if something seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

MidnightAura · 06/11/2016 02:39

I wouldn't, I think if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

My dress was £150 from Lightinthebox. Arrived about 5 sizes too big despite being measured. I spent £100 getting it adjusted so had a unique dress for £250 but the fabric etc wasn't close to the quality of a 'proper' dress. Worked for me as I'm not a girly girl, wasn't fussed about the whole wedding thing and couldn't have afforded a real dress. But even so I slightly regret not budgeting for something a bit better quality to feel truly special - having tried on a couple of proper dresses it's just a totally different experience.

Check out sales / Ebay / charity. Good luck whatever you do!

ConvincingLiar · 06/11/2016 07:31

There are Chinese wedding dress sellers on eBay who review well. I wouldn't buy from one that only got 1/5 on trust pilot.

That dress is lovely, but not particularly unusual. I imagine there are a dozen dresses from other designers that would fit the bill. If you've actually tried it on, and it's your "dream dress" (which I think is a load of bollocks as a concept) then I'd look at buying a sample/2nd hand.

NauseousKitty · 06/11/2016 07:42

Try www.sellmywedding.co.uk. Loads of pre-loved dresses and also so many beautiful things and bits to blow your budget.

Twinchaos1 · 06/11/2016 08:07

I bought my wedding dress online, but it was a vintage one with lots of photos. I loved it but it needed repair work and cleaning when it arrived. It was also smaller than I thought so l had to diet like crazy to fit it. All of this was fine because I had plenty of time to sort stuff out. I bought my evening wedding dress from John Lewis in the sale and it was both pretty cheap and hassle free!

SlottedSpoon · 06/11/2016 08:20

I would love a big newspaper to do a test on this company by buying in about ten dresses, all different styles and sizes and then comparing them to the photos on the website and publishing the results.

SlottedSpoon · 06/11/2016 08:25

I think if someone can afford to take a gamble and potentially lose all their money (and have loads of time to source a replacement) it might be worth a punt for around 150 quid for a dress that might otherwise have cost several hundreds or 1000 or more. I'd say order bigger and with a good alteration seamstress if the basic cut is not too shocking it could be taken in for a perfect fit. (assuming there isn't loads of hand stitched beading over the top of the seams.) But you'd have to be prepared that it might arrive looking like something from a jumble sale and not be any use at all.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 06/11/2016 08:34

Yea don't buy from this site the reviews are shocking! Try and find the designer name/number and then look at pre loved or eBay.

I found my dream dress in a shop near me at £959 that was way over budget but I loved so would have paid it but I have searched and searched on eBay since finding it in May with no luck until a few weeks ago when I found it on eBay for £270, I was very wary but the seller sent me actual photos and it was stock from a closing down bridal shop! It can happen!

backtowork2015 · 06/11/2016 08:40

Stunning dress OP but I agree you shouldn't buy it from a company unseen with bad reviews. Also, have you tried any styles on yet. I thought I knew what shape I wanted but once I tried several different styles I realised a different one was far more flattering. You can't really judge a dress on a hanger or a model. You need to go shopping Smile

LegoLady95 · 06/11/2016 08:59

I think it depends on the style of dress you want too. I got married on a beach, so my dress was very unstructured and floaty - as were my bridesmaids. I don't think I would have risked ordering a structured wedding gown type dress.

Pickled0nions · 06/11/2016 09:10

Why not go into a few local wedding dress shops and ask if they have off the rail sample dresses for sale? Then you can try them on in store and you'll know if you like it :)
Got my La Sposa dress this way, from £1440 to £580

zigzagbetty · 06/11/2016 09:25

www.copplestonesbridal.co.uk/
This is where I got my dress from and it was great! They don't charge more than 500 a dress and have a huge range. If your not near book a cheeky little city break with the savings!! I was at the end of my tether trying to find a budget dress and this saved my sanity Grin

HopefulHamster · 06/11/2016 09:30

Don't do it!

I bought a £300 dress from Debenhams and it was great. That was a few years back now but surely department stores, Monsoon and Phase 8 would all have dresses in your budget that would be returnable if they don't fit? Bet you can get a lovely one!
