To ask if anyone here has accidentally got pregnant in their 40s?

It's more to soothe my fears. I don't THINK I can be pregnant...but there's a slim chance...I didnt even think about it until just now.

I've been very tired for the past 2 weeks, so tired I have been having a little sleep in the afternoon...and weeing a lot...and just now (it's evening here in Oz) I realised that I really needed an ice lolly...something I never eat...unless I'm up the bloody duff.

My period is due about now...so it could all be PMT I suppose...I'm 44 but still very regular with periods...no sign of menopause and my family tend to have theirs late....I think once you're in your mid 40s the chances of getting pregnant are slim to none aren't they though? Like...some months I won't even HAVE an egg...even though I have a period?

This isn't a "Oh go and pee on a stick" thread....I can't get hold of a test for a couple of days due to where I live...and I wouldn't come back here to say what had happened anyway...

I just wanted to know the stories of people who this has happened to so I can compare and feel comforted if it's only 3 or something.

Took me 10 years to have DS1 I was 37 when I had him.
DS2 first month of trying and then only twice and I was 40 - had him when I was 41. Best thing that ever happened to me Smile

notfromstepford · 04/11/2016 10:24

Oops - sorry for the double post!

Str4ngedaysindeed · 04/11/2016 10:27

Yes! I got pregnant at 40 - completely unexpected - we had a 5 year old and a 15 year old at the time! It was a shock to be honest and I didn't really know what to do for a few weeks but that shock is now 11 and incredible!

MrsGwyn · 04/11/2016 10:36

Know a few people - some who had coils fitted.

They all had healthy children - one went on to have several more - four more as it kicked them of being broody again 24 year between oldest and youngest.

I seemed to remember a lot of the work showing fertility dipped post 35 was The data on which that statistic is based is from 1700s France.

I think all you can do is try and stop worrying and wait and see - either by getting a test when you can or just waiting till it's clear to you one way or another.

hoddtastic · 04/11/2016 12:21

40 odd and with a coil? JESUS CHRIST... WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO TO ME??? fans self

Drbint · 04/11/2016 12:27

Yes, at 41. Had first child at 40 after trying for years without success. Second one got started 9 months after DC1 was born.

Brilliant pregnancies both times despite the common assumptions that 40 is ancient and your knackered old body will never cope Hmm.

SuperFlyHigh · 05/11/2016 20:25

MrsGwynn yes the Fail featured Jean Twenge who's a fertility expert and either her research or some other research was based on yes 1700s France for post 35 fertility drop! So of course it'd be out of date now!

Very strange was speaking to friend of friend at fireworks display last night and her sister is pregnant with twins (boys) at 44. Friend told me it was her sister's third child as she already has an 11 year old! Eek!

My mum actually got pregnant in her 40s ectopic pregnancy (unplanned) and ended up with ruptured Fallopian tube where she almost died, think she was 44 or 45, think she was either using the cap or coil. Probably the cap. Sorry to scare people but there are risks.

SuperFlyHigh · 05/11/2016 20:27

DrBint if you research later births and pregnancies not that i intend to do this but the outcome is surprisingly good provided you have adequate healthcare. Of course you'll be more tired etc and an older mother but provided you take all the relevant factors into consideration and the fact that people live longer and healthier lives these days then if the chance occurs why not?

Yika · 05/11/2016 20:37

Wasn't accidental but I got pregnant instantly with my DD at 43, first time of trying.

ForgotStuff · 05/11/2016 20:54

HoddTastic 😂 I'm 50 and I'm very happily sterilised with 4 DC in their 20's. I know happy and healthy 40 years olds who have had kids and while I'm delighted for them on the outside inside I'm 😱😱😱 I loved it when the kids were little but I have no desire whatsoever to do any of it again.

Shedoesntgetthatfromme · 05/11/2016 21:02

Yes! At 43, I sailed through^ the pregnancy feeling fantastic and she was perfect. She still is at 2.7 -^ although I feel less energetic now and another would do me in.....Confused

Hercules12 · 05/11/2016 21:06

Omg. This thread is frightening. I'm 42 and really don't want another child.

brambly · 05/11/2016 21:11

My mum got pregnant twice in her mid-late 40s, when DSis1+2 and I were all teenagers. She niscarried both babies, but still.

She is now a few days shy of her 57th birthday and is still ovulating and having regular periods.

MyBonnieLiesOverTheOcean · 05/11/2016 21:33

My friend had lots of problems conceiving but happily had 2 successful rounds of IVF in her late 30s. When she was 46 she thought she was going through the menopause...but no....she had fallen pregnant naturally! She was shocked but delighted. All was well and baby healthy.

QueenArseClangers · 05/11/2016 21:49

My mum had regular but light 'periods', put on a little weight and thought she had a lot of wind.
Turns out, at 44, she was 26 weeks pregnant with me! Proper schock as she'd had my brother aged 17 so there's a 27 year age gap between me and DB.
I always find it strange that my mum and my brother are so close in age compared to me.
I'm pretty fertile and heading into my 40s. I've had my tubes tied but always have my mum's history at te back of my mind as a worry shudder.
My baby making days are definitely over now, with 5DC I've done my bit Grin

Sweetandsour93 · 05/11/2016 21:55

I was a surprise baby when my mum was 42 Smile
She was convinced she'd just put on some weight!

SpeckledyBanana · 05/11/2016 21:58

My DM did. And here I am.

maroda16 · 05/11/2016 22:02

My mam did, at 44, she was 45 having little sister who is now almost 13 and an auntie of four! We were 22,20,16 5 when she came along, best surprise ever!! And a wonderful aunty to my baby boy!

Charzz · 23/10/2023 03:45

Hi there hope you managed to find out what has been going on .
Well I am 45 and assumed was going through menopause . Had my bloods to be told I am pregnant !!! I have a large family already my eldest being 28 and youngest 7 so thought my days were over for child bearing but obviously no.
Now I am left with some big decisions to make . Good luck
