To ask if anyone here has accidentally got pregnant in their 40s?

It's more to soothe my fears. I don't THINK I can be pregnant...but there's a slim chance...I didnt even think about it until just now.

I've been very tired for the past 2 weeks, so tired I have been having a little sleep in the afternoon...and weeing a lot...and just now (it's evening here in Oz) I realised that I really needed an ice lolly...something I never eat...unless I'm up the bloody duff.

My period is due about now...so it could all be PMT I suppose...I'm 44 but still very regular with periods...no sign of menopause and my family tend to have theirs late....I think once you're in your mid 40s the chances of getting pregnant are slim to none aren't they though? Like...some months I won't even HAVE an egg...even though I have a period?

This isn't a "Oh go and pee on a stick" thread....I can't get hold of a test for a couple of days due to where I live...and I wouldn't come back here to say what had happened anyway...

I just wanted to know the stories of people who this has happened to so I can compare and feel comforted if it's only 3 or something.

might be a bit extreme but my mum was told at age 14 she could never have children. she didn't want them anyway so I guess she had never actively tried but found out she was pregnant with me age 40, massive shock to say the least!

You can keep saying 'rural Australia' until the cows come home mate but the Brits won't fully appreciate the remoteness of that Grin.

I purposely became pregnant in my 40s and it's all okay at this end. I'm tired and cranky a lot but then again, I was that way before I had children.

Best of luck with the result whichever way it turns out.

Yes, only realised when I got morning sickness. Felt a little foolish at 40, but discovered I was far from being alone (even my midwife).

I'm preggo with dc 4 at 43. It was our second month of trying not very much.

Dc3 was born at 40 and I can't say I found the pregnancy any more tiring than with dc1 when I was 34. Basically, I've felt horrendously knackered throughout regardless of ageGrin.

Good luck op.

Yes, I was 43. I didn't go ahead with the pregnancy though, and have now been sterilised.

A colleague of mine also got pregnant at the same age. It's less likely to happen in your 40s, not unlikely!

Ouch, Grin hod!

MIL's mum had her twelfth child at 46. She thought the baby was the menopause.

My last child was born 3 months before I turned 44. Like others on this thread, our first child took us 18 months to conceive when I was 20. Conceived instantly 3 times ( 2 x MMC) aged 42-43.

User, sorry it took so long to get back to thread. I had a really easy pregnancy and delivery. I feel really lucky that everything turned out as it did. My little surprise is now a rowdy 9 year old.
I hope that everything turns out the way you want it to...

I also know of someone who had her 8th baby at age 50. She thought she had a gynae issue, went to hospital, they did a rourine ultrasound before her procedure. Bam, 4 months pregnant. Baby born completely healthy. She is now in her 90s.

I conceived four times and had two children between the ages of 40 and 45 - without trying too hard. Was thinking that at 50 I could stop worrying about contraception but glad I've read this thread....

According to Jean twenge and her articles though harder it is definitely possible and more and more women are getting pregnant and carrying pregnancies to full term in their 40s partly due to the fact that women are healthier than ever at this age.

I know someone age 50 who is pregnant at the moment. She had her previous baby at age 46!
Also friend of a friend got pregnant age 52 though miscarried. She hadn't bothered with contraception as thought she was past all that!

50!!!!!! 50!!!!!!!

There's something about 50... Any age in the 40s still sounds normal, but 50!

My gran had her last at 47.

Bit of a side issue but just to dispel any myths...you need to continue contraception for 1 year after your menopause if you're over 50 and 2 years if you're under 50. Medically speaking the menopause is when you haven't had a period for 12 months.

I'm a HCP and see a lot of women getting pregnant in their 40's as many women get a bit lax about contraception, thinking fertility is reduced. Not necessarily true. The oldest accidental pregnancy I have seen was age 53!!

yup. stepmother had baby brother at 42, grandmother had aunt at 46 and miscarried age 52.

20 year gap between me and Dbro4 and 21 year gap between not so DM and DAunt.

I swear on my 40th birthday i'm having iron knickers welded on just in case.

Took me 10 years to have DS1 I was 37 when I had him.
DS2 first month of trying and then only twice and I was 40 - had him when I was 41. Best thing that ever happened to me Smile
