For being thoroughly p'd off by The Ritz Hotel - long rant sorry

This weekend it was my mother's 70th birthday and she decided that she wanted to celebrate it by staying at The Ritz Hotel in Picadilly. She booked rooms for herself, her cousin , my bro and SIL, me, DH and our DD's (13months and 2yrs) for last night.

It was DH's birthday last week and we decided that we (us to and our DD's) would add an extra night onto our stay tonight and treat ourselves to a bit of luxury.

In the week running up to this weekend's planned extravagnza I called the hotel twice to check on arrangements for baby sitters, baby paraphanalia and other bits and bobs. My DH also popped in there in person to suss a few things out as well. When he visited the hotel on this recce he was wearing jeans - this was not remarked upon by the staff there.

Anyway... yesterday we arrived and rather chaotically checked in with the DD's being a bit bemused, loads of clobber and general disorganisation. DH and I were both wearing jeans. No comment was made on our dress.

Yesterday afternoon, after checking in we decided to get some tea. When we went downstairs we were informed that we were not allowed in the dining room as we had jeans on. I accepted this although it meant I could not feed the DD's downstairs at the table and had to cobble something together in our room with them sitting on my knee.

Last night we get all glammed up and we had a lovely meal.

This morning as we were getting dressed I checked the guest information book regarding dress code and it said the following. " Gentlemen are expected to wear a jacket and tie in the Palm Court and Restaurant after 11am". As it was 8.30am and Sunday morning we got dressed in jeans (smart ones, no rips, nice boots, did my hair and make-up, DH was wearing a shirt etc etc) and headed on downstairs. On arrival at the breakfast room we were refused entry because of our dress.

After much debate with the staff and two duty managers we were given the following options:

  1. Have breakfast in our room (not much space & no table)

  2. Have it in another dining room on our own and to only be able to have a continental breakfast (didn't want to eat alone and we wanted the full English)

  3. Go elsewhere.

This meant that the whole party (i.e. us and my mum, bro, SIL, cousin etc) could not have breakfast together as my mum - who was paying for the whole thing wanted her breakfast there, which was fair enough.

We opted for number 3. This meant taking the DD's upstairs, getting them all in their coats, getting the pushchair out, and finding somewhere else to go. Totally bloody inconvenient, and they were both starving and beginning to create by then.

The upshot was that DH and I were so pissed off with being treated like sartorial lepers that after breakfast (at the very accomodating and understanding Wolsey) we went back to the Ritz and cancelled tonight's booking because we felt so unwelcome and patronised.

So, AIBU in expecting the hotel to have made it VERY clear that there was an absolute no jeans policy on the 3 opportunities they had prior to our arrival when we contacted them to discuss our stay? Is this something everyone in the whole world just knows (except us obviosuly)?

I know this is an old thread but if it happens to anyone else there are a bunch of shops close by the Ritz, where a person could pop in and buy a pair of leggings, a skirt or trousers if they needed to quickly. I'd have done that.

I thought the ritz (as are most luxury London hotels) was known to have a dress code? I knew no jeans are allowed

You can usually find it on their website Before you go

Good news, people of the future! The Ritz dress policy remains as unclear now as then. (I’d never stay anywhere so po-faced: plenty of luxury hotels that don’t give a toss I assume.)

The Ritz London has a dress code in different areas of the hotel as follows: Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie (jeans and sportswear are not permitted for either ladies or gentlemen) for afternoon tea in The Ritz Club and The Palm Court, and for lunch and dinner in The Ritz Restaurant and Terrace. In all other areas of the hotel (The Ritz Restaurant breakfast service, The Rivoli Bar, The Long Gallery and The Ritz Garden), smart casual attire is required. Please note that shorts, trainers and sportswear are not permitted in any of the hotel’s restaurants or bars.

Think you've been a bit disingenuous in the first place not considering that jeans wouldn't be deemed smart enough dress in such a prestigious hotel.

DC1 went for a 'posh meal' with his friendship group at a provincial branch of The Ivy. Even there the recommended dress code is listed as 'smart casual' which would likely exclude jeans and trainers. As they're young adults, they had to be 'nudged' to ensure they dressed appropriately for the occasion.

You can go to the Savoy (Our dress code is smart casual. You are more than welcome to wear jeans provided they are in good repair. Jackets and ties are optional for gentlemen. Please be advised we do not permit sportswear or running shoes.) or Claridge’s (At Claridge’s we do not operate any dress code, however we find most of our guests choose smart casual dress.) or the Lanesborough (Smart Casual, no sportswear). I cannot find a single expensive hotel that bans jeans from a time-wasting random Google.

@Knittingchamp yes, there are loads of shops nearby and only a short walk to Oxford Street if you really want to go to town on spending. When you come out of Ritz go right.

You're in the Ritz. You should have known it had a dress policy, and taken smarter clothes to wear every day. You can wear jeans any time!

Random provincial branches of the Ivy aren’t going to stop someone in smart jeans coming in.

😂really strange. I clicked in through active threads, so had no idea it was from 2007. Weird.

Did you also not notice the site telling you this thread is over a year old?

I’m only posting on here because the collection of Hyacinth Bouquets provides some entertaining distraction from jobs I should be doing. Turns out that’s timeless.

Seems to have involved Princess Di, who had only been dead a decade when this thread was started!

Pure snobbery. If you were the right type of person in the right type of jeans I strongly suspect you would have been allowed to have breakfast. Pretty sure the only function of places like the Ritz now is to make oligarchs feel important.

Who knows what their dress code is now as this was 15 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!

In case it helps anyone, their website now says "Smart jeans can be worn in The Rivoli Bar and for breakfast service in The Ritz Restaurant. In all other areas of The Ritz, jeans are not permitted"

If it was the same back then, maybe they didn't think the jeans were smart enough - but then I'm not sure why you'd take jeans if staying in a 5* place anyway?

OMG this thread is 15 years old. Why would anyone want to reanimate it?

Who else is going to point and laugh at the non-whole thread-readers posting today?

Zombie threads are turning up in people's feeds because of the recent upgrade to this new website and failure to filter out the very old data. I've got crap in my feeds that are years old. Nothing will change until HQ do a proper tidy up of the old data - could be a very long wait!

I think YABU. I was actually looking at the Ritz website yesterday to book Afternoon Tea for a 60th birthday gift. The dress code is quite clear. I think you've rather spoiled your mother's birthday weekend.
