to be embarrassed at having to go to A&E for this?

I realise the title sounds like I've shoved something where I shouldn't have (or "tripped and fell") and need it removed. Sorry to disappoint, not one of those stories!!

I had a coil fitted this Saturday and it was excruciating (literally a whole other thread), according to the little booklet afterwards, it shouldn't have been that painful.
Afterwards, Satan's mistress the doctor tried to use an ultrasound on my belly to check it was in the right place.
Because I have, and I quote, a "backwards" uterus, and I was in so much pain I couldn't stay still, she gave up before seeing it.

Cramps are totally normal apparently, but I've been distinctly feeling a stabbing pain - always in the same space, and alongside the cramps. Its not constant, but frequent enough and when I feel it it makes it difficult to stand up.
It feels a lot like something is stuck and is pressing into the side of my uterus, but I'm not convinced that isn't me just with that idea in my head IYSWIM.

I put up with it for several days but in the end called 111 yesterday to ask what to do.
I spoke to a lovely nurse who told me I should get an ultrasound again to try and see that it was in the right place, hadn't perforated my uterus or got stuck in my cervix. She said to go to A+E.

I said I didn't really fancy getting out of my PJs and wasting an evening in A+E that I could spend eating ice cream - which in itself is a good sign of someone who doesn't need to go to A+E. She laughed, agreed and said then if I felt I could cope, to call family planning in the morning (who fitted it).

Now after hours and hours of phone calls, I have found out that there are only two places within travelling distance that have ultrasound that aren't the hospital - neither have doctors present until next Tuesday.
My GP can refer me to the ultrasound at the hospital for an appointment, but again that won't happen until Tuesday. None of the walk in centres have the right equipment.

I don't think I have a choice but to go to A+E (which is literally 2 minutes from work) after work.

But it isn't an Emergency. I feel ridiculous for going, I feel like I'll be wasting their time! This is not the purpose of the service, surely?
I'm embarrassed to trot over and whinge that my "belly hurts" whilst people come in holding their own heads under their elbows etc and have swords coming out their chests.
Though I appreciate that beheadings and sword injuries will have priority.

I had EXACTLY the same issue. I went to a sexual health clinic because I knew they fitted them (it's aimed at prostitutes) and cried until they removed it!!!! Turns out the copper coil they suggested was just about the worse thing in the world to put into my lady regions when I have a history of endometriosis. Go to A&E

MatildaTheCat · 03/11/2016 17:53

A&E may not be able to scan themselves but they should have had you assessed by the on call gynae doctor who would have either done a scan themselves if deemed necessary or brought you back in the next day for an ultrasound. It seems unlikely you will get any answers without an uss. Keep trying the GP for a referral, this does speed things up. I would be on the doorstep to your surgery first thing tomorrow morning demanding an emergency appointment. Not being able to get through all day is unacceptable.

It's unlikely you have perforated your uterus statistically but the pain you have is not normal and the insertion was both painful and difficult so you should be concerned and use tomorrow to sort this out. Obviously go back to A&E sooner if your pain worsens or you feel ill or develop a fever.

natjojo · 03/11/2016 18:01

I strongly suggest you go to A&E and get that scan done without delay. I have had 3 coils fitted and once in place correctly you do not feel them. The first one was badly fitted and caused me immense pain and complications. If you do not know better you think it is to be expected.
I have a retroverted uterus like yours and on top of that sacculations (little side pockets due to the trauma/stiching of 3 C-sections) and they had put it in one of the sacculations instead of at the very top of the uterus! The darn thing fell down, constant scratching feeling, pain, burning, candidosis, you name it I had it. I went on for weeks. On top of that I found out I was not protected and could have fallen pregnant. So don't delay, it only takes 20 minutes as soon as you get at the top of the queue. Bear the queue and the ackward situation, it is worth it.

noddy · 03/11/2016 18:01

I suffered exactly like you and waited s long time. Had to have an operation to have it surgically removed from where it pierced my womb. Please get seen and best of luck x

Bristololdtrout · 03/11/2016 18:03

Daughter has recently had same problem after having the coil for only few weeks - truly awful pain in 'the wrong place' as she described it and a feeling that the strings were 'low'. Turns out her coil had slipped into her cervix and was causing tearing and internal inflammation. Her GP who fitted it removed it there and then and the relief was instant. She wasn't entirely pain free for a few days but it was soreness rather than horrendous cramps. She is now in no pain but on 2 x antibiotics and anti-nausea meds. Don't delay. if it has slipped it might be doing damage.

claylou1976 · 03/11/2016 18:05

I would go to a&e. You may have to wait a while because of more serious cases like you've said but to put a positive spin on it, the nurses probably don't get many cases like this so you'll be providing valuable training to them 😊 and it will make a change from broken bones and viruses. So you're actually doing them a favour by attending a&e 😆.

a1poshpaws · 03/11/2016 18:08

Go. What if you DO have a perforated uterus? The longer you leave it the more dangerous it'd get.

Yogimummy123 · 03/11/2016 18:11

A&E seems to get busy after lunchtime so go early & they'll be less busy & have more time 4 u. Shame GP is not being v helpful..

Winemamma · 03/11/2016 18:12

Go and get checked.

I had some period pains for a few hrs after having the coil inserted and that was it. I've had it for almost 3 yrs now, no issues, sounds like yours hasn't gone in quite right.

Hope it's nothing serious and you get it sorted.

Cheerybigbottom · 03/11/2016 18:18

I hope it's morning serious, as I was in intense pain overnight with cramps for a week when I got my coil. Everything was fine though and it's the best thing I've had for contraception.

I'm really concerned about your lack of medical care though, no one seems to be taking ownership of you (as a patient) and helping you.

Chrissy1982 · 03/11/2016 18:35

An Italian friend of mine knocked on my hotel room door at 7.15 in the morning. "Chrissy can you help me please?" He was cleaning his ears out with Johnson cotton buds and one had broken off in his lughole. I fiddled about but couldn't get it out so we ended up going to A & E at Whipps Cross hospital in east London. The car had been broken into that morning so I dropped him off and went to get the window fixed. I came back after a couple of hours and he had been sorted. They had performed a bit of triage initially and divided people into red, blue and green groups, depending on the urgency. They had given him a green ticket and he had to wait a couple of hours or so and he had been done just before I arrived. He thought the A&E service and the NHS was brilliant. I am sure they will do the same for you but you should get at least a blue ticket. Go and get sorted out, no-one should suffer prolonged pain after a medical procedure. Pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong.

SooBee61 · 03/11/2016 18:37

You must go. I've heard people with splinters go to A&E so you won't be wasting their time. A perforated uterus would be no laughing matter.

Daddymcdadface · 03/11/2016 18:53

Don't know if anyone else has said this but go, go, and go

QOD · 03/11/2016 19:08

Oh man hope you're getting scanned soon?

TheBarbersWife · 03/11/2016 19:14

My sister went to the hospital before because she reckoned her bum was broken....Blushif the reason is less stupid than that always go to get checked

expatinscotland · 03/11/2016 19:16

'My sister went to the hospital before because she reckoned her bum was broken...'

Did she break her tailbone? I've done that and it hurt like all fuck. I went to A&E, however, because in that fall that broke my tailbone I also hit my head and cut it badly and it just wouldn't stop bleeding.

TheBarbersWife · 03/11/2016 19:18

No she hadn't been able to poo for days despite laxatives and fruit.then the gave her a spoonful of something that really got her bum working againSmile

grumpyoldwoman15 · 03/11/2016 19:19

I have the same, retroverted womb and the pain was indescribable when they tried to insert a mirena coil. Had to have it fitted under general anaesthetic (and also it's eventual removal) Go and get yourself sorted out. No brownie points in putting up with the pain and discomfort.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2016 19:23

Ow! She should have tried an enema at home. My bladder went to sleep about 5 days after I had a long GA. Several doctor friends told me I had to go to hospital, the GP did, etc. I finally caved after hours in pain. But the catheter sorted me out.

Daydream007 · 03/11/2016 19:30

YANBU. Sounds serious enough to me, go to A&E and don't feel embarrassed as people go with far less wrong with them.

Olympiathequeen · 03/11/2016 19:39

I had this and it turned out the string was coiled up in the cervix. Pain went once this was pulled down. Did it with a Devils instrument speculum. My uterus is also retroverted. Nightmare having smears or anything gynae.

FannyWincham · 03/11/2016 19:39

Hope you have managed to see someone by now, OP. I fainted and had awful cramping after my first Mirena was fitted, and ended up having a scan at the early pregnancy and gynae unit at Tommy's. You can definitely self-refer for early pregnancy; I don't know if you can for acute gynae issues but you could give them a ring. I was referred by a doctor at the family planning clinic who fitted the Mirena; might be worth investigating if you cannot get in with GP. Alternatively, GP might be able to refer after a telephone consultation.

Picoloangel · 03/11/2016 19:40

i once had to go to A and E with DD who was unconscious after a febrile convulsion. I felt mortified when she was siting up half an hour later tired but OK. There were people there with minor sunburn, scratches and even colds.

GO! YANBU. You are in pain and not wasting time.

pamhill64 · 03/11/2016 19:44

Trust your gut- it's in the name- accident and Emergency and yours is neither. Sorry but far too many people go when it's not necessary. Let me pose this question- if it was 20 miles from work would you be so keen to pop in as it's conveniently close? Maybe that's why you want to go as much as the discomfort? Go to GP or clinic and if they don't think it's an emergency then wait. Otherwise they'll send you in and you'll have every right to be there. Good luck btw

erchissick · 03/11/2016 19:47

It will be an emergency if it perforates something!!!

Go to A&E.

I'm very luck not to need contraception but if I ever did need it, I certainly would not have a coil fitted. I feel for you, please go to A&E. if its bothering you that much, there's a problem and it needs sorting x
