To shout out of my window at these twats? (With diagram)

Ok, now I've calmed down.

On my way to pick my daughter up from nursery. I'm driving slowly anyway around the corner obviously, maybe 10mph.

There's a blunt corner and as I come around the corner about 4 people just walk across it - thankfully I was going slowly and was able to break in time.

I shouted out of my window 'there's a crossing right there - use it!'.

I heard back 'You have to stop anyway you twat!'.

As I turned around the corner the lights were turning amber so yes, I would have had to stop but surely crossing the middle of the road on a corner is really dangerous?

The group of them were laughing and thought it was quite funny but im failing to see what is funny?

Diagram attached as I am not good at explaining!

Yanbu. Just had a cyclist come out of a sideroad at spread without looking Cross in front of my car and go Across the road (making car on other side brake like me) and cycling on the pavement. No idea how i or the other car missed him. No way to you blindly cycle into a busy road ever. My dd was in the back. Im requiring chocolate now and dd having milk.

Lol at knob drawings! Grin they are knobs clearly, as only knobs cross on a corner!

allwornout0 · 02/11/2016 14:46

People who are in the wrong (like the pedestrians) always like to try and turn things round onto the other person to blame them rather than admit they were at fault.
Hope this makes sense.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/11/2016 14:48

but I expect you would be glad if your shouty jaywalkers had suffered a similar fate.

No, I wouldn't enjoy that.....

I do expect people to think about their safety and that of others around them and not cross on a corner, though.

5 of them. A knobs day out Grin

IrianOfW · 02/11/2016 14:49

They are being a bit daft. Doesn't matter whose right of way it is if you get killed by a car.

Ohdearducks · 02/11/2016 14:51

I don't care who's right or wrong here, the important thing to remember is that there is a spectacular drawing of knobs.

ImperialBlether · 02/11/2016 14:51

OP, you win the prize for the best diagram I've seen ever on here.

Sirfredfredgeorge, your advice, "Next time, walk or cycle to pick up your daughter from nursery or avoid driving in areas with shops where pedestrians are very likely to be" wins the prize for the very worst advice I've ever seen on here.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/11/2016 14:51

A knobs day out

Properly just snorted at that!!!

CocktailQueen yes, it means precisely that, unfortunately! As long as a pedestrian has started to cross before they see the car then they do have right of way and the car driver is likely to be deemed at fault if they couldn't stop in time. However moronic the chosen crossing spot.

And also, if you can't see around the corner then you must slow down to ensure that you can stop in the distance that you CAN see. If that means driving at walking pace then technically, yes, that's what you have to do.

Anyway, all of that is irrelevant because it is positively dwarfed by the OP's awesome diagram. I think diagrams should be compulsory for. Out threads.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/11/2016 14:55

WP I think your response was very restrained

Been here far too long to rise to the bait these days!

Thankfully in my defence I was going very slowly - it's all very hard to explain without actually knowing this bend/road/knobs..

I put a lot of effort into that diagram...

I also laughed at 'knobs' so just for that YANBU Grin

OP, technically speaking the correct behaviour in this situation will depend on us knowing more details:

E.g. if the pedestrians were on the dominant road and you were on the secondary road, then they have the right of way and it was your job to look out and stop for them.

If the pedestrians started crossing the road before you turned your turning signal on, they have the right of way over you.

Also, when turning round corners you as a driver should always be prepared to stop. Pedestrians, even though they are supposed to look out for turning cars, do not always do so (or turning cars can be obscured by things like busy traffic) and it's really not worth risking their life and a jail term for you just to make a point. Unless people are behaving like twats deliberately, I don't see a point in shouting at them.

paddypants13 · 02/11/2016 15:04

I once had a woman start to cross the road I had started to turn into. I had to slam on and she shouted at me to "learn to use my horn". I wound my window down and told her to "learn to use her fucking eyes". It was not my finest moment. Blush

They should have crossed at the crossing but I wouldn't have said anything.

Minstrelsareyum · 02/11/2016 15:06

If pedestrians are in the process of crossing a side road off of a main road and you are turning into that side road, pedestrians have right of way. However, from your diagram this doesn't look like you were driving from a main road into a side road, more like continuing on a main road around a left hand bend. Therefore, it was your right of way. You were in the right and they should have used the crossing. You did nothing wrong.

Hackney at the moment is FULL of these knobs. Stepping out without looking, sauntering across busy roads, nipping in non-existant spaces with their bikes. Frankly while I know we always have the right stopping distance and are not breaking speed limits (20 around here) it is a fucking idiotic risk to take.

disclaimer: Hackney is quite knobby anyway.

StrictlyPan · 02/11/2016 15:25

The standard of diagram drawing round here is pretty poor overall.
This one scores for: clarity (nice and clear), content ( knobs) and artistic impression.
Underscored for: lack of colouring in, no other street furniture signified, misrepresenation of the number of knobs in attendance.

6/10

StrictlyPan · 02/11/2016 15:26

neat trick to 'nip into a none existent space' Hmm

WaitrosePigeon · 02/11/2016 15:31

6/10, not bad. I did misrepresent the number of knobs. It was definitely around 5 knobs. A knobs day out as someone accurately put it Grin

Yes, it's a main road that's right Minstrel.

OP posts:
WaitrosePigeon · 02/11/2016 15:32

To clarify as I started coming around the corner most of the knobs were just about to put their foot onto the road. All happened very fast.

Still knobs.
