Trick or treaters letting themselves in

First off, I've had a hard day so I might be slightly narky.

My DS has been ill all day - loaded with the cold and a temp of 39. I've just picked him up from my mum's (been at work all day) and trying to get him into a cool bath and get some calpol down down him. He's just miserable and my DH is working away.

I put him in the bath and I hear the door. I know it'll be trick or treaters but I can't leave my son in the bath (he's 2) so I decide to just ignore it and see if they come back later.

Oh no. The door opens and in walks the boy from next door whom I do know accompanied by 4 or 5 other children! Their mums are standing at the bottom of my garden shrieking with laughter and encouragement.

These children were standing in my hall way shouting and laughing Confused

I got my DS out the bath, ran down the stairs and I asked them to leave and closed the door.

I actually got a bit of a shock that they'd be so bold!

I never even gave them sweets Sad

WIBU to ask them to leave?

Don't give a toss if it's halloween and they're excited, what a cheek!
What were their parents thinking??
If someone came into my house uninvited they'd have been told to get out in not very nice terms.
Yes, do lock your door though, there's strangers about amd clearly people with no manners. Confused

I don't understand - how did they get in?

If you leave your door unlocked you are bloody lucky it was just kids that walked in.

I would be pissed of with the parents not the child. I don't lock my door when I'm in either. My kids and their mates know it's not locked they Just come in.

My door wasn't open. It was unlocked. I'm sure not every single person locks the door behind them in the midst of making a small child dinner, administering calpol, bathing them etc etc

I really don't think the issue is me leaving a door unlocked. For me the issue is children with no manners Angry

It's not really acceptable, but they are excited children and its Halloween. They didn't shit on your doormat, did they? It's not really an issue.

Of course it's an issue.

You don't just walk into other people's house!

Halloween is no excuse.

Depends how old the kids were I guess. I was a bit Halloween Shock to see the door handle being pulled down by a small person but I have a Yale lock so they didn't get anywhere.

They were tiny and excited and going round strangers houses is unusual for them.

Sorry to hear your DS is ill OP. Flowers Dump some sweets on your step or porch and turn your hall light off.

why is it an issue? They did it, OP dealt with them. How is it an issue now?

Thanks Sauvignon.

They ranged from 4-9 I think.

I'm amazed at everyone locking their doors when they are in the house.

You're not really getting the point of this whole section.

Forget giving them sweets, I'd have been threatening to call the police. How dare they!

OP I'm sorry your ds is ill and I'm sorry you're upset. I'd really consider getting a Yale or something so the door locks as soon as you close it. I don't think anywhere in the world is safe enough to not lock your door and tbh having a little one to run around after makes it even more important to lock a door.

Also now you know what the parents are like in your street, even more reason.

I can't understand why anyone would lock their door when they are out ( and all that's in the house are possessions) and leave it unlocked when they are in (when their precious family are there) Would your insurance even pay out of you were burgled?

D Neice was raped after leaving her front door unlocked and a man followed her in.

Carry on though.........Confused

I don't know anyone that doesn't have a yale lock on one of their doors Confused

Completely off topic, but I have lived in many different houses in my life, and every single one of them has had a front door that is locked (i.e. You can open with a turn of a knob from the inside, but would need a key to open from the outside), as soon as you shut the door.

Is it really that common to have a front door that you need to actively lock to stop people just walking in?

Yanbu, I think you sounded quite restrained under the circumstances. The cheek of some people.
Technically they are trespassing. Why do it now when they wouldn't any other time of the year (I hope).

Op, we've just had the same thing happen! Door wasn't locked as DH was in and out to the garage but isn't an excuse for anyone to open it and let themselves in. DH slammed the door in their face Grin but I went out and gave them some sweets and a lecture about not opening strangers doors. The mum just stood there. Makes it even worse when there is an adult with them.

They are outrageously unreasonable to just walk in but YABU too. You leave your door unlocked? After dark?

I have a front door that doesn't lock unless u turn the knob on the inside. If you just shut it then it can be opened from outside. I think they got off lightly with you just asking them to leave! So unbelievably rude and halloween doesn't excuse it!

We don't have a yale lock. I can't remember the proper name for the type of lock we have but it's one where you have to lift the handle up and then lock it with the key. Very annoying as you have to remember to lock it every time but also handy for when you nip to put the bins out and the door slams shut. At least I'll never be locked out Grin

I'd be having words with the next door neighbour tomorrow - along the lines of never do that again. And I would say I was naked 😂

That is bad but do lock your doors! Anyone could have come in and nicked off with your car key or purse!
