To feel the doggy-as-child thing goes too far

I like dogs. I got my parents a dog and she changed their lives. But something seems wrong about dog stuff in our little town. The whole child-substitute thing just goes too far. It is as if all the pressures of child rearing are transported on to dogs.

Example 1 today. I bump into friend K with her cute new puppy. A stranger's puppy interacts with K's puppy. K and stranger exchange friendly doggy chitchat. K's puppy is straining at the lead and they have this dialogue.
Stranger: oh! Yours wants to come off the lead!
K well, I wouldn't trust her yet.
Stranger: oh, what you can do is, take her to the park, you know the enclosed children's playground before the kids get there, it's so good for her training!
K oh right....
Stranger: or the tennis courts, she can have a great time on the tennis courts and she can't get out.
K right, thanks...

This is not an isolated thing, I have noticed it for a while. I am sure that my parents -yes- trained their dog. But then she became part of the scenery, not the big focus of conversation. There were no dog play dates, dog cages or dog anxiety. They did not allow their untrained dog in areas where dogs are not allowed for very good reason. And she was none the worse for it.

We don't go into a play area with families or anyone there. The one we go to is grass, no artificial flooring. I wouldn't take a dog in there.

wineusuallyhelps · 30/10/2016 21:59

FWIW I have an older puppy and would never take him inside an enclosed children's park. He cocks his leg all the time! Even when you pick up your dog's poo, it's still not hygienic if children are going to be playing right there shortly afterwards. It's a no-no for me.

Lovelyideas · 30/10/2016 22:00

Wysiwyg,
I accept that grass is a better shared surface but still think you should reconsider.

OP an acquaintance told me that she suffered from post natal depression after the birth of her puppy.

Katinkka · 30/10/2016 22:02

My dog Percy found a dummy one day :P

wysiwyg16 · 30/10/2016 22:03

We don't need to anymore, three or four sessions down there and he was done. Certainly don't take him to children's play areas now

Lovelyideas · 30/10/2016 22:04

I don't have a problem with that dummy.

The dummy does not smear my kids' faces in dog poo or wee. Nor will it scare them.

But finding the playground in occupation by a dog is not right.

And the dog dander?

Cherrysoup · 30/10/2016 22:12

And the dog dander?

S'alright, everyone's got one of them non-shedding designer cross breeds nowadays, innit?

Lovelyideas · 30/10/2016 22:13

Dander would blow around anyway I guess....

My dog is my family but I don't take him into children's play areas that are clearly signposted 'no dogs.'

I have seen others do it and I don't agree, regardless of whether a child is using it or not.

In return for that I hope that children won't object to my dog in dog-friendly areas. We had quite a scare locally when non-dog people tried to get them banned from the park.

charlestonchaplin · 30/10/2016 22:23

I thought dander was about shedding hair but no, it's skin cells, so no dog is safe. If many of the local puppy owners took to training their dogs in children's playgrounds they would definitely become a danger zone for some asthmatic children.

I think dogs are great creatures in both personal and professional capacities but I object to them being foisted on anyone. The beauty of dogs is that their impact on others can be greatly minimised by considerate owners. Unfortunately there are many self-centred owners about.

Lovelyideas · 30/10/2016 22:27

Yes it is difficult to meet the needs of considerate owners because one badly behaved owner can cause real problems.

As a tennis player and dog owner I'd be fucking furious to see complete twats other dog owners thinking it was a good idea to train their incontinent 'children' on the courts.

Picking up dog-piss sodden balls, or worse, from the courts? No thanks - we are trying to attract more kids and families to play the sport in a safe and cleanish arena (they are council-owned courts).

Wysywig's attitude is appallingly selfish.

SpunkyMummy · 30/10/2016 22:32

Dogs are awesome... our Bram-Bram (Bertram) was such an awesome dog.

Kind, funny, loved to play fetch...

However, dogs in a children's play area? Nope.

OneForTheMummyTwoForTheSoul · 30/10/2016 22:37

It's a fenced off area to keep dogs out, not to keep children in.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/10/2016 22:38

An enclosed play area WITHOUT children is the perfect place for recall training. We've done this a few times, don't see the problem.

Because it's not a place for dogs. And if your dog poos or wees there it's revolting for children.

tabulahrasa · 30/10/2016 22:41

My dog found a dummy once as well...it's my favourite photo.

Bellabelloo · 30/10/2016 22:45

I grew up with cats and dogs and thought I loved them....but it's nothing like the love I have for my gorgeous dog. The bond is amazing.

FluffyPineapple · 30/10/2016 22:49

*I think the tennis court is a bloody great idea, thanks for that!

I've not let my puppy off lead yet and she's not pooed or weed outside so it would be fine, I could start recalling her.

Frankly I'm more concerned about her being stolen than anything*

Can I ask why your puppy hasn't been off lead yet? Why it hasn't toileted outside, why do you think your puppy will be stolen(bearing in mind a puppy will stick to you like glue) and lastly why you think a tennis court is a great idea to walk your dog?

How old is your puppy?

Foxyspook · 30/10/2016 22:52

I haven't really read this thread but as a dog owner and mother the things that annoy me are:

People talking about potty trainings dogs,
all the revolting stuff in pet shops that is totally unnecessary,
people getting very bossy about crate training etc and all the rules and judgements about the way you should train your dog - reminds me a bit of Gina Ford and babies

HerRoyalNotness · 30/10/2016 22:53

Plenty around our way 'walk' their dogs in doggy strollers Hmm. Make America great again Grin

thenightsky · 30/10/2016 22:54

From what I understand from PP, the idea of tennis courts means the puppy can spend a while (maybe 10 mins or so) being trained on recall, whilst not being able to run off into the distance. This wouldn't be happening whilst tennis was being played I assume, therefore would not impact on anyone and there would be no balls around to become urine soaked. Although why a dog would choose to piss on a ball rather than the floor makes no sense. Confused

ThatGingerOne · 30/10/2016 23:01

I don't agree with letting dogs in children's play areas or on the courts but I know someone who has a chihuahua and they say the tennis courts are the only place she can let it off to train as the dog area in the park doesn't have small enough spaces between the bars for her dog (Most tennis courts where I am have fences in a grate shape IYKWIM. I understand this would work for me too but I just don't let them off anywhere and use an extendable leash instead. Much safer and more considerate, plus I think dogs prefer to run about on grass, not concrete.

I wrote to the council asking them to use grate shaped fencing or adhere chicken wire (or some safer alternative) to make the dog area escape proof for smaller dogs as I've seen jack russells even get though normal spaced bars. Its a real shame no one took it into consideration when building it :(
