To wonder if you need a penis to operate this boat?

Otherwise, why else could it possibly be "ideal for boys"? Or is it probable that girls wouldn't want to play with boats, or things relating to the police?

Such an unnecessary addition to the description

Eye roll, the steroptypical boy orientated toys fgs, stop being pedantic! Of course they are fine for any child.

Queenbean · 29/10/2016 09:43

I would say that it's being pedantic which stops all this shit becoming every day language and therefore acceptable

I didn't buy it anyway. I made a protest of 1 against Argos for this sexist nonsense.

If your dd wants it, go and buy it, of course you don't need a penis to operate it, I know that is tongue in cheek. I used to play with nothing but boy orientated toys when I was younger. There will always be gender sterotypes, you have ladies clothes and men's clothes, male toilets and Female toilets etc. If your dd wants boats, and planes and transformers go and get them for her, and ignore the gender sterotyping.

I think that some retailers are wising up to this, but as you have seen with Argos not all are.

joshlymanlover · 29/10/2016 09:45

I think it's actually got worse in the last few years compared to when I was a child.

Charley50 · 29/10/2016 09:46

I think we should all post questions and comments on the Argos site.

Aeroflotgirl · 29/10/2016 09:47

I just had the other day from my mum, as I was joining a kickboxing dojo, oh god Aeroflotgirl, you want to be a man, you are a man, you are doing kickboxing, want to be a pilot, like boys toys and boys clothes when you were little, and want to drive a car, yes definitely you want to be a man! This was 2 weeks ago, I was like Hmm yes right, and ladies can't do those things!

Aeroflotgirl · 29/10/2016 09:49

josh when looking for domestic stuff for ds, there was a lot of gender neutural toys which quite surprised me.

Celticlassie · 29/10/2016 09:52

I think it has got worse. In the 80s lego was lego - gender neutral primary colours. Now we have lego, and 'girls' lego. Which of course is pink. Angry

CatThiefKeith · 29/10/2016 09:52

I think Argos have a point. I bought a boat earlier on this year and since then I have noticed that my facial hair has increased, my boobs have shrunk and my voice has gotten much deeper.

I'm thinking about painting the boat pink to try to reverse the process. Will this work or will I need to teach dh to drive it instead?

Aeroflotgirl · 29/10/2016 09:54

Oh yes it was Celtic, I remember, and had boys and girls on the box. Yes I still have a box of my primary coloured Lego, now there are Lego friends etc, pink Lego.

dementedma · 29/10/2016 09:54

Ds used to have one of those dolls which look like babies. It wore a pink baby bro and was his favourite toy. I was worried that DS was, in fact a girl but fortunately he named his baby Alan, which redressed the balance somewhat.
Update: Ds is now nearly 15 and already over 6 feet tall. He was "helping" me clear out a cupboard of old stuff the other week when we came across the little Moses basket which contains Alan. "Alan!!!!" exclaimed DS in his new manly growly voice. I suggested we give Alan to charity.
Alan is still safe in the cupboard.....Grin

Queenbean · 29/10/2016 09:54

It wasn't for my daughter, it was for a friend's son anyway but I still didn't buy it

Aeroflot if you don't understand the difference between having men and ladies loos and labelling toys for boys and girls then I won't explain it. I'll just quietly bang my head against this wall.

I do understand, meanwhile, just buy them. It is annoying and smacks gender stereotyping, but that would not stop me buying dd Transformers or Lego for her, if she wants it.

Rainydayspending · 29/10/2016 09:57

That's why I love my son's post swimming onsie (coral background, blue knights) alerts me to any adults too confused to be potential parent friends Wink.

EdithWeston · 29/10/2016 10:04

"I think it's actually got worse in the last few years compared to when I was a child."

Yes, considerably worse.

It's - at least in part - down to higher disposable incomes and lower cost in real terms of toys.

Before, things were just toys and were expected to be handed down between siblings, cousins and friends. They were (usually) robust, well-built and in bright colours (except 1979s when everything turned brown for a while).

Nowadays, the marketeers - in a straightforward aim to double profits by more consumption - push the idea that things are only for boys or girls, so that people buy twice as much, and do not hand on even big-ticket items such as bikes if they are for the 'wrong' sex.

And of course, the early stereotyping is pervasive and is leading to a generally more gendered society. Where people think it's just 'natural' for boys to like skulls and pirates, and girls to like unicorns and princesses, rather than the result of conditioning, advertising etc.

And those parents who say 'but it never did me any harm' are probably not talking about the same phenomenon - unless they are teenage parents - because it simply wasn't like this until very, very recently.

"meanwhile, just buy them"

Not a terribly effective way to boycott a specific retailer who adds this crap description in their catalogue.

"It is annoying and smacks gender stereotyping, but that would not stop me buying dd Transformers or Lego for her, if she wants it."

Can they be had from stores which just list them as toys (or in ways that describe the toy, like 'action' or 'creative') rather than ones which go in for gender-based stereotyping?

Saci · 29/10/2016 10:11

I've seen someone operate a boat with a penis, it didn't end well.

To be fair to Argos they didn't say you need a penis they only said ideal for people with a penis. So nothing to stop anyone buying it for their daughters, but if they don't play with it then either add a kitten, turn it into a kitchen or get someone with a penis to show your little fuzzy headed princess how it works.

Saci · 29/10/2016 10:17

CatThiefKeith just make sure that when you do paint it, you take it out of the water completely and rename it "princess dinghy" because if you don't do this it will sink and as you haven't grown a penis yet you won't be able to swim. Given that your boobs are no longer big enough, they won't be able to keep you afloat long enough for someone with a penis to come and rescue you. Flowers

Bogburglar75 · 29/10/2016 10:27

I saw the attached diagram a while back which seems to clear up the matter nicely.

To wonder if you need a penis to operate this boat?
ninjapants · 29/10/2016 10:29

I bought a body warmer for DS. On removing the label I noticed it stated 'girls gillet'. At no point did it occur to me that it was intended for girls only, it is a great unisex one though I guess (red with blue lining).
I hate gender stereotyping and prefer DS to choose what he wants. He normally goes for 'boys' things but I wouldn't care either way.
We had a few raised eyebrows when Santa brought him a toy kitchen last year. He loves it, and hopefully it'll lead to him being very capable in the kitchen and cooking for us like his Dad Halloween Smile

GrinchyMcGrincherson · 29/10/2016 10:49

If your hair starts turning white, the facial hair increases and you develop a love of fish fingers you need help fast.

Mummyshortlegz · 29/10/2016 10:49

The other area getting worse seems to be clothes. I have two sons and cannot afford scandi colourful brands. We buy supermarket or primark mostly and the boys sections are small and free of colour. The girls have more choice but it is still based around pink.
