Perfume - akin to cigarette smoke ?

AIBU to feel saddened by a blog I read recently or am I just out of touch?

The article related to our taste in perfume often changes with age - especially after the menopause. It was followed by an online discussion and I was amazed to read that some people feel that perfume shouldn't be used at all in public and liken it to cigarette smoke in both smell and hazardous effects.

I felt really saddened by the sanitised view of life some of the posters portrayed. One poster called it a 'perfume habit' and went on referring to perfume as if it was a Class A drug.

I love perfume and feel 'undressed' without wearing it. I feel it will be a sad day if users are banned from wearing it (as some of the posters felt they should be).

squoosh now there was a smell! Girgio BH, takes me right back to being 18!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/10/2016 15:10

*Giorgio,even!

squoosh · 28/10/2016 15:12

In the last 5 years I have given up cigarettes, spirits, sugar and sex

Scent would be an alliterative word too far! Wink

squoosh · 28/10/2016 15:12

I'm going to have a snifter of that too Still, presuming it's still on sale in reputable shops!

merrymouse · 28/10/2016 15:16

Poison smells like undiluted ribena.

lizzieoak · 28/10/2016 15:20

Is there supposed to be some actual difference in perfume vs perfumed products? We all use perfumed shampoo for example - no-one asks us to give up that.

At my last office, my work friend & I were told off for using Body Shop hand creme as it "might cause an allergic reaction", although none of the 10 people nearby are allergic to anything!

EwanWhosearmy · 28/10/2016 15:20

We had a temp who doused herself in scent at her desk 3 times a day. Her manager got so many complaints he had to have a word with her. Her contract wasn't renewed.

I don't think anybody minds a light dusting of perfume so that you can smell it when you are talking to the person, but it is really antisocial to douse yourself in it. One of the worst places is in a theatre when somebody near you stinks of scent and you can't just move away.

AppleMagic · 28/10/2016 15:25

Nope. I have a fragrance contact allergy and have to use all fragrance free products. In my case the products actually have to be applied to my skin though so smelling other people's fragrance is not an issue.

Perfume doesn't cause me any issues but if it was a migraine trigger for me I'd probably be "precious" about it too. If you're leaving a scent behind you you are using too much.

Boolovessulley · 28/10/2016 15:26

I love wearing perfume,
Often I can't smell it on myself after a while.
I dislike all Dior perfumes.

I can't stand the smell of fags- gross.

RachelRagged · 28/10/2016 16:03

Oh Giorgio Beverley Hills takes me right back .

They sell it in Superdrug and sometimes I am tempted to buy a bottle for old times sake.

NotCitrus · 28/10/2016 16:27

I don't know many people who use perfume or aftershave - but of those who do, they use it sensibly: you should only notice perfume if you are close enough to be kissed! And if you aren't there, people shouldn't be able to tell you were by the smell.

Most shampoo isn't scented so strongly that people will still notice after you've left the shower - and Lush stuff is horrible. I don't mind a subtle perfume on someone, but kissing someone and making out and then realising you have a mouthful of perfume is grim.

I used to go swimming and about halfway through my time a new lifeguard would turn up, and you could smell the perfume even half-way across the pool! It was so overpowering people had to leave because they felt sick. Hope he got advised to reduce it.

merrymouse · 28/10/2016 16:32

I'm sure there used to be more scent samples in magazines.

squoosh · 28/10/2016 16:33

I love perfume samples in magazines. Just sniffing a copy of Vogue makes me happy.

Cellardoor23 · 28/10/2016 16:38

I like perfume in moderation. Some people can take it too far, as if they have sprayed half a bottle on themselves. It gives me a headache.

lizzieoak · 28/10/2016 16:45

Applemagic, I get migraines and I've been told by my neurologist that the idea of triggers is passé now. That we starve things when we are predome & that things like scent are coincidental. For what it's worth.

I'm sensitive to light in the predome phase but wouldn't expect anyone to turn the lights down for me (I've been known to work indoors wearing sunglasses).

Bathing in scent like a teenage boy with Axe is one thing, a light spritz is another. Life gets awfully restrictive when we have to bear in mind all these no-go things. I'm repulsed by the smell of pork (it makes me feel like gagging), but I figure that's my cross to bear.

lizzieoak · 28/10/2016 16:46

Should have been "we crave things", not starve things. Silly autocorrect.

GobblersKnob · 28/10/2016 16:51

I adore perfume, but generally agree you shouldn't smell it without hugging someone, wafting about in a big cloud is a bit much in close proximity, I don't want to smell your perfume I want to smell mine Wink

Personally I am allergic to the ingredients in some washing powders/fabric conditioners but think I'd be a bit bloody unreasonable to suggest they were banned.

Gottagetmoving · 28/10/2016 16:53

Perfume is fine. Drowning yourself in it isn't.
I sat next to a woman on a train, who must have used a whole bottle of the stuff. It was suffocating.
I hate going into houses that have air fresheners plugged into sockets. My sister has several and also one of those things that spurts out a puff of freshener if you walk past it....It's too much!

Vagabond · 28/10/2016 17:00

I loathe the smell of Chanel 5. I have a friend who douses herself in it and I find myself avoiding sitting near her.

I hate the smell at Lush. It's too much and always packed. I hate that shop. My DD loves it.
Wear scent, but just be judicious in your application.

MuseumOfCurry · 28/10/2016 17:58

I will never understand Chanel No 5. Smells like old lady/funeral to me. I'm probably too common to get it.

JanetStWalker · 28/10/2016 17:59

Scent would be an alliterative word too far! Wink

Absobloodylutely, squoosh Grin

Today I'm marinating in Feve Delicieuse and undecided whether to eat or shag myself!

grannytomine · 28/10/2016 18:06

My husband is allergic to anything perfumed. I can't wear perfume, have to have unscented deodorant, soap etc. You wouldn't like it if you started spraying perfume near him in a confined space, the sneezing is epic and messy and unpleasant. Good luck with enjoying your perfume round him.

lasttimeround · 28/10/2016 18:06

I love perfume. What I loathe is the newly created and marketed smell of 'clean' all over products for home or hody and the sickly sweet fug of perfume bit in depth stores.

I love the smell of people wearing perfume. I love how perfume react differently on different skin. I love wearing perfumes to go with or contrast my clothes, the weather or whatever.

Perfume is one of the most beguiling things - it let's you travel without needing to go anywhere

lasttimeround · 28/10/2016 18:07

But spritzing in public is just bad manners

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 28/10/2016 18:10

Undecided to eat or shag myself hahaha Grin
