Perfume - akin to cigarette smoke ?

AIBU to feel saddened by a blog I read recently or am I just out of touch?

The article related to our taste in perfume often changes with age - especially after the menopause. It was followed by an online discussion and I was amazed to read that some people feel that perfume shouldn't be used at all in public and liken it to cigarette smoke in both smell and hazardous effects.

I felt really saddened by the sanitised view of life some of the posters portrayed. One poster called it a 'perfume habit' and went on referring to perfume as if it was a Class A drug.

I love perfume and feel 'undressed' without wearing it. I feel it will be a sad day if users are banned from wearing it (as some of the posters felt they should be).

I like perfume. I tend to wear one (it's very subtle and I know that you'll only smell if if you were to nose around my chin/neck area. Or hug me.)

A slight whiff when giving somebody a peck on the cheek? I don't mind that...

MuseumOfCurry · 28/10/2016 13:08

I'll wear perfume to my grave. You can pry it out of my cold. dead hands.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/10/2016 13:10

Most perfumes people seem to shower with are rank and I do think some places, hospitals ought to be scent free.

Something lovely, used sparingly, not in a hospital setting, no problem.

ijustwannadance · 28/10/2016 13:10

I think many perfume wearers become too used to the smell over time and are unaware how potent it can be.

As for allergies, any strong fake smell kicks off my migraines. Perfume, horrid car air fresheners, glade plug ins/scented candles etc. Nothing worse than someone thinking it's ok to whip out a bottle of perfume or body spay and dowse themselves in a confined/public space.

Puppymonkey yeah I think they would, I change my perfume frequently my boss has told me when she hasn't liked certain ones as much as others Besides I only put a spray on I don't bathe in it

WeArePregnant11 · 28/10/2016 13:11

TBH... if people are upset by the smell of my PG 12 when they hug me.

Well, they can kiss my ass Grin I'm sure they'll prefer. Heathens Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/10/2016 13:11

nicer for everyone if I leave a smell behind me it's a pleasant one

What's wrong with no smell at all?

MadameDePomPom · 28/10/2016 13:11

I worked with someone who used to douse herself in Impulse. In the office! (she was my boss so I couldn't say anything). Awful stuff, such a synthetic wall of scent. And boy does it linger.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/10/2016 13:12

I love wearing perfume and won't stop using it, I'm an Angel wearer btw.

No one has ever complained to me.

Lovelybangers · 28/10/2016 13:14

Bloody hell. Confused

I'd rather smell some perfume on my fellow train passengers than stinking hot beef sandwiches or pasties.

MadameDePomPom · 28/10/2016 13:14

I love Diptyque's Philosykos and cannot afford to spray it too liberally!

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/10/2016 13:15

but nicer for everyone if I leave a smell behind me it's a pleasant one

Thing is though that pleasant is subjective. Your idea of pleasant might be my idea of disgusting.

user1467976192 · 28/10/2016 13:16

smells are good it's all going to be fine. Your strongest memories are evoked from your olfactory system.. a world with no smell would be very depressing indeed. I don't think we are going to find a common ground here.. we'll have to agree to disagree

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/10/2016 13:16

I love Diptyque's Philosykos , me too Madame, it's gorgeous.

Exactly

I hate the smell of cinnamon. One of the worst scents I think. Yet a lot of people love it

I love vanilla. Some people hate vanilla

sofato5miles · 28/10/2016 13:22

I love a decent scent! I wear Fred Mallé's Lily Poudre in tje day and Musc Ravageur at night. Have done for about 8 years and still get compliments regularly.

I also love getting a wsft of others when i am out. Especially retro ones as they instantly take me back..

PuppyMonkey · 28/10/2016 13:23

Ha ha the world has zillions of lovely natural smells - as if artificial perfumes could compete. But as I said, go ahead and wear those expensive fragrances if that's what you want, just be aware many might think you stink something rotten.

MadameDePomPom · 28/10/2016 13:24

Yes I love the hurtling back in time feeling you get when you walk past someone who's wearing a perfume from your past. I smelt Calvin Klein's Eternity on someone recently and was immediately back in 1993. 15 years old and snogging boys.

user1467976192 · 28/10/2016 13:27

Who said I wore artificial scents... who said I wore expensive scents? I don't recall saying either, I have studied aromatherapy I make my scents with essential oils. I take my fragrance from nature, using what I feel will benefit me at the given time and I don't care if people think I smell rotten I use scent to make me happy not them

tellyjots · 28/10/2016 13:28

This reminds me of the Coco Chanel quote

Perfume - akin to cigarette smoke ?

YES!!!

I nearly cried when I smelled Gucci Rush not so long ago, I wore it at such a sad/fun time in my life - had just broken up with my fiancee and took a new job in a distant city and dated a wholly unsuitable boy and we listened to the Magnolia CD endlessly and.... I wore Gucci Rush.

PyjamaInducedApathy · 28/10/2016 13:36

I guess we don't know what anyone thinks really do we? I mean, you may think I stink but I may think you're ugly! Like scent, it's a just as subjective.

Yamadori · 28/10/2016 13:37

After an hour or so, I can barely smell my perfume
It's still there - your nose has switched off from that particular scent.

user1467976192 · 28/10/2016 13:39

Museum of curry I am in love with that comment it's dkny the red apple that takes me back to snogging boys

I like rose as well don't know what the memory is but there is something on the cusp of my mind and I find rose soothing

There is a lady I look after that wears my late grandmas scent I don't personally like the perfume it's too potent Estée Lauder youth dew but it reminds me of my grandma and the good times

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 28/10/2016 13:42

15 years old and snogging boys I'll always equate that with the combination of B.O and Lynx Africa Grin
