WWYD - creepy box in attic

LittleSausageFingers · 24/10/2016 19:52

DH and I bought our first home, which is 100 or so years old, last year. It has a partially boarded attic, and in the attic is a fairly big metal box addressed to someone in New York. It looks really old, old fashioned handwriting on the address label, super dusty like it's been there a long time.

We're not particularly "woo", but we've seen our fair share of horror movies, including those involving boxes in attics (Sinister, anyone?) and we weren't really keen to open it. Plus, I was 9 months pregnant when we moved in and we had other things to do, like build a million boxes of Ikea furniture.

Our friends (mostly) think we're mad for not opening it. One of them researched the name on the box and came up with an old newspaper clipping saying that the person died in an asylum from a religious furvour! Obviously it's probably a coincidence, but date wise it would fit with when the house was first built.

I must admit that my main reason for not wanting to open it is that it's dirty as fuck and i don't want to have to clean up all the mess involved in getting it down! My DH doesn't want to open it because he is actually scared of ghosts (has been known to scare himself while telling a made up ghost story Hmm).

The house doesn't feel haunted or anything like that, but it has a couple of weird quirks that freak us out a bit, e.g. the spare bedroom door (loft hatch is in this room) sticks for no obvious reason and you can get stuck in there. We've also both seen a shadow move under a door looking out into the hallway from the nursery.

So WWYD about the box? Open or leave it?

We found a memory box in the shed of all places, when we moved here. It wasn't locked and was full of medals for various childhood sports, certificates for the same sports, birthday cards, letters and a few photos, nothing of any value, but (I would have thought) of tremendous sentimental value to someone. Especially the letters from a mother to a daughter. The woman who lived here before us died suddenly, and her DH and DCs moved away afterwards.

Anyway we contacted the estate agent who contacted the solicitor of the vendors and apparently they didn't want it, told us to bin it.

I haven't chucked it out and am in two minds what to do with it. It obviously belongs to the deceased woman's daughter who is in her late teens now.

I have thought about trying to contact the daughter via social media and seeing if she wants it. I wonder if her dad hasn't told her about it, maybe doesn't want to be reminded of the past? Or maybe I'm overthinking things and the girl isn't the least bit sentimental.

Our first house was built in the 1860s and we found an old book behind the hot water tank when we were having central heating installed 👻

It was a home ec exercise book from the 1970s and contained the same culinary horrors that I had to produce for my GCSEs. Actually I took my GCSEs so long ago I think my exercise books could now be historical documents!

LittleSausageFingers · 25/10/2016 10:29

That's really sad Emmageddon, I would hold onto it.

LittleSausageFingers I am going to hold onto it. The daughter is a similar age to my own daughters and I'm pretty sure, if I wasn't around anymore, they would appreciate being reminded about how much I cared for them and was proud of them for all their achievements. My DH is of the same mind, maybe leave it a year or so, then see if we can contact her directly, rather than through her family solicitor.

I had bolts on the outside of the kitchen and living room doors in my old flat, so DS couldn't go anywhere except my room and the toilet when he inevitably woke up before me. They were right at the top of the door so he couldn't reach them. Can feasibly see an older sibling having the same so younger kids can't go in their room when they're not there - so not necessarily creepy when you think about it.

I've never been in my loft (new house, heavily pregnant) but DH has and he jokes about little old Dolores who lives up there. At least, I think he's joking...

Get a grip. There are no such thing as ghosts, and if you don't want to get your house dirty, open it in the attic.

TheHobbitMum · 25/10/2016 18:34

All the bedroom doors in my house had locks on the outside of them. The lady who lived here before us would lock her children (7 of them) in them at night/punishments. When we were decorating we peeled off odd/mismatched wallpaper which she had papered in odd strips to hide the holes the children had punched in the plasterboard, very sad lives those kids had. Thankfully the children were placed in foster care

SherbrookeFosterer · 25/10/2016 18:55

Open it on Monday!

Definitely open, the cupboard under the stairs in my old house had been blocked off and they left a weird boarded up window, first thing I did was bust it open! I was convinced their was something horrible in there but it was just a load of old newspapers! Was disappointing and a relief at the same time! Please open it

Happylotti · 25/10/2016 19:49

Kittybythelighthouse · 25/10/2016 19:50

YuckYuckEwwww · 25/10/2016 19:52

OPEN IT THEN CANCEL THE CHEQUE Grin

bluebell4 · 25/10/2016 20:02

Open it! Be warned though. My sister found a skeleton in a box in her loft. It turned out to be a teaching aid (it'a wired to be hung) but it is real

DesolateWaist · 25/10/2016 20:15

Don't forget to cancel the cheque afterwards OP.

Daydream007 · 25/10/2016 20:52

Please open it and report back on here! So exciting!

HemanOrSheRa · 25/10/2016 21:11

THE BOX HAS BEEN OPENED. OP OPENED THE BOX. It was empty. But still gave us all a shiver of excitement LAST NIGHT.

PRMum2012 · 25/10/2016 21:54

I'll open it for you... this is the making of a great story :-)... its like the marina cupboard in your roof

PRMum2012 · 25/10/2016 21:55

That should be Narnia... sorry had some wine... small keyboard etc etc

flipertyflop · 25/10/2016 22:29

Shame there was nothing in the box. When we moved to our house there was loads of stuff to clear, no creepy boxes but an old filing cabinet in the garage. At the back of the bottom drawer we only went and found the previous owners stash of 1960's porn mags! Next door neighbour (similar age to previous owner who died) spends lots of time in his garage so obviously we came up with the assumption that both of them got together to open up the filing cabinet on occasion Wink

rockcake · 25/10/2016 22:37

get a grip, there are no such thing as ghosts.....

Says who?

Roversandrhodes · 25/10/2016 22:54

Can't believe how many people are saying there's no such thing as ghosts

CreativeBee · 25/10/2016 22:56

OMG, been reading this from the beginning, got to page 13 and DH has gone in to give DD another cuddle and started making howling and whispering sounds through the baby monitor. I nearly shit myself!!! 😖

purplebunny2012 · 25/10/2016 22:58

We have bolts on the outsides of our 2 spare rooms as we don't want our DS going in them!
