WWYD - creepy box in attic

LittleSausageFingers · 24/10/2016 19:52

DH and I bought our first home, which is 100 or so years old, last year. It has a partially boarded attic, and in the attic is a fairly big metal box addressed to someone in New York. It looks really old, old fashioned handwriting on the address label, super dusty like it's been there a long time.

We're not particularly "woo", but we've seen our fair share of horror movies, including those involving boxes in attics (Sinister, anyone?) and we weren't really keen to open it. Plus, I was 9 months pregnant when we moved in and we had other things to do, like build a million boxes of Ikea furniture.

Our friends (mostly) think we're mad for not opening it. One of them researched the name on the box and came up with an old newspaper clipping saying that the person died in an asylum from a religious furvour! Obviously it's probably a coincidence, but date wise it would fit with when the house was first built.

I must admit that my main reason for not wanting to open it is that it's dirty as fuck and i don't want to have to clean up all the mess involved in getting it down! My DH doesn't want to open it because he is actually scared of ghosts (has been known to scare himself while telling a made up ghost story Hmm).

The house doesn't feel haunted or anything like that, but it has a couple of weird quirks that freak us out a bit, e.g. the spare bedroom door (loft hatch is in this room) sticks for no obvious reason and you can get stuck in there. We've also both seen a shadow move under a door looking out into the hallway from the nursery.

So WWYD about the box? Open or leave it?

Give it a clean, put some rusted metal legs on it, voila! Lovely coffee/side table you can sell on Ebay! I love that kind of stuff! Instead of a TV cabinet, I have one of those old steamer trunks to keep my DVDs/CDs, other ugly crap, and the telly is mounted on the wall above it.

salsmum · 24/10/2016 23:24

I was sent to work in a house on the grounds of an old asylum which had been turned into luxury flats ....spent the night there and lived to tell the tale ( my bosses didn't mention this when I was sent there Hmm

DesolateWaist · 24/10/2016 23:25

Right, who is going to either print this thread off and send it to the address on the box or send a link to the thread to the local paper of the address?

WatcherOfTheNight · 24/10/2016 23:32

SaltySeaBird now you know you can't say that, you big tease!

Scaredycat3000 · 24/10/2016 23:36

I've got two of those. They are travel trunks, that's why there will be handles on each end and the address. Mine have got lots of slightly cool address labels all over them and very boringly contained very old C&A's bags. I use mine for tool boxes. I paid £20 each for mine 20 yrs ago, must be worth a little more now. No spooky, just left the empty suitcase in the attic.

Dozer · 24/10/2016 23:40

Perhaps the emptiness is because former residents were ahead of their time with the Marie Kondo

BerylStreep · 24/10/2016 23:51

The weird thing is that both sisters died of religious mania within a couple of months of each other. It suggests some sort of psychosis from either an infection or exposure to an environmental toxin.

Poor women.

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 24/10/2016 23:55

I think the dream about finding new rooms is meant to be quite a common one and means you are aware you have undiscovered potential!

Bowie DP said it's probably a result of the owner trying to split the large bedrooms into even more space and the next owner just papered over the wall not realising.

But that doesn't explain why the doorway was papered over/didn't exist!

Ditto for all these hidden rooms! Why would they hide them??

We need to have some kind of mass woo investigation - all MNers living in old properties need to start measuring rooms, cracking on with any work on the house, checking attics and basements... there MUST be more mysteries out there!

CheshireChat · 25/10/2016 01:22

Am I the only one who noticed what BerylStreep wrote?! That's a horrible way to go. Shudder

YuckYuckEwwww · 25/10/2016 01:28

Ditto for all these hidden rooms! Why would they hide them??
in older houses they were used to hide catholics weren't they?

what's the first part of BerylStreep 's story, can't find it on the thread

YuckYuckEwwww · 25/10/2016 01:31

I've known of people who have put bolts on the outside of doors because their children have a habit of getting up in the night……

Like that tv family with lots of children who you're not allowed to say anything negative about on MN because that's not in the "supportive spirit of the site" or something? even though the locked their children in their rooms to sleep train them regardless of the fire risk

Laiste · 25/10/2016 07:37

I have a recurring undiscovered room dream too!

It's always the same, and i can feel it coming within a 'normal' dream, IYSWIM, and start to feel dread. I find a very big room, a stainless steel industrial kitchen. Lots of big sinks, at least one full of filthy cold water. A high window banging open letting freezing cold air and rain rush in. All been abandoned for years. I walk in feeling horrified, panicy and overwhelmed.

WTF is that all about? Confused

I think we need a What's My Dream? thread Grin

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 25/10/2016 07:52

Yuck in older houses they were used to hide catholics weren't they?

You'd still need a door or at least a hole! I don't understand why they'd board it up afterwards...

ConvincingLiar · 25/10/2016 07:54

OP sell it to hipsters, they like dusty old stuff.

Temporaryname137 · 25/10/2016 08:17

that link says she and her sister married two brothers and were "sun worshippers". it says she was "afflicted" and died in an asylum.

at least it doesn't say devil worshippers!

BusterGonad · 25/10/2016 08:36

The link doesn't work, lease could someone resend it or do a screen shot. I love old story's and stuff.

BusterGonad · 25/10/2016 08:36

Please I mean! Grin

diddl · 25/10/2016 09:18

Only just seen the link.

It says that her sister died, but they were both a Mrs Turner.

So sisters who married brothers/relatives?

Are you in UK, Op?

BusStopBetty · 25/10/2016 09:26

No, that wasn't them. They lived and died in California, not New York.

Does anyone know how to use US census records? I can find them, but not work out how to find an address.

BowieFan · 25/10/2016 09:34

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho

Well on the landing there was a bricked up doorway, but we didn't know it was there until we stripped the plaster back. The door was into the other room definitely hidden but I've read about a lot of old boarding houses having these secret doors because it allowed people to visit prostitutes and the like covertly.

It is very creepy though, I must admit!

BowieFan · 25/10/2016 09:38

dayswithaY

It definitely freaked me out. At first we thought it might be due to the old doors banging if it's windy, but it was only the bedrooms. The upstairs bathroom and cupboards didn't have them on. It spooked us a little bit.

LittleSausageFingers · 25/10/2016 09:42

Relieved to report no ghostly goings on overnight, although I did dream about a creepy old house (thanks all Halloween Wink) during the 20 minutes of sleep DD let me have...
