AIBU to find the word 'cuppa' REALLY IRRITATING?

Ok, so I'm definitely overreacting here, but whenever anyone asks me if I want a 'cuppa' I cringe inside. What's wrong with using real words? Like tea? Or Coffee? Or cup of?

I'm aware that people as grumpy as this don't usually get asked if they'd like a drink of any description, so I should count myself lucky that some people in my office still like me - but everytime anyone utters the word, I want to wince.

I don't know what hideous childhood 'cuppa' experience has scarred me to this extent - but am I alone? Does anyone else want to cause harm to a colleague when they're just being perfectly friendly and offering to make me a tea/coffee.

Having re read this, I almost want to award myself a Biscuit for being such a twat. I should probably just go home and have some Wine, shouldn't I?

"Pow wow". Said in an office environment.

Sativa · 24/10/2016 18:43

I can't stand the generic 'juice' when offering drinks to children. Orange juice, apple juice etc are fine.
Just not 'juice'......

ChestnutsRoasting · 24/10/2016 18:47

'Going out for a few wines' really bugs me. Totally works for 'beers' but I need a glass with my wine!

WildDigestive · 24/10/2016 18:50

Is 'placcy' bag pronounced to rhyme with 'Blackie' or 'Lassie'???

Brew and cuppa make me irrationally cross, too. Likewise 'slap-up meal', 'fall pregnant', and - possibly most unreasonably - the use of 'the side' to mean 'the kitchen counter/work surface'.

Chipscheesentomatosauce · 24/10/2016 18:50

I see it a lot on here, but I hate "spends".

WildDigestive · 24/10/2016 18:51

SPENDS!!!! Angry

worrierandwine · 24/10/2016 18:57

Cup a char, no sugar and not weasel for me Grin

Gran22 · 24/10/2016 19:00

My username identifies me as a gran not a nan, nana, or even a nannan, as used round here. Being Scottish, gran or granny wins every time! I'm not a lover of cuppa or brew either, and when did women start calling their friends mates?

dinosaursarebisexual · 24/10/2016 19:02

Mitzy a grown adult would use stomach.

FerretFred · 24/10/2016 19:02

I'm new to MN and i never knew there was so much in life to get wound up about!

How exciting to realise I can spend the rest of my life vexed!

missbishi · 24/10/2016 19:08

I can't stand the generic 'juice' when offering drinks to children

Me too, especially if it is, in fact, squash or cordial.

MeganChips · 24/10/2016 19:09

Heh, welcome Ferret. We have these kinds of threads a lot.

I don't like cuppa much, or yummy but I will defend Nana. Again, too lots of grandparents and this is how we differentiated them.

The word that irrationally winds me up is dessert. My hackles rise every time DH or FIL say it in a fake posh accent.

BolshierAryaStark · 24/10/2016 19:11

The lists of words that irritate the world of Mumsnetters is quite frankly endless & always makes me chuckle. I can't honestly think of a word I hate, Hun makes me Halloween Hmm sometimes but a lot of my friends use it so I struggle to get worked up about it.

FerretFred · 24/10/2016 19:14

I'm going to start muttering some of these words and see if people coil in disgust!

I wonder if I some have a tic when the offending word is said.......

Tubbyinthehottub · 24/10/2016 19:15

Cuppa is one of my worst. My MIL says it and I have to try really hard not to punch her. She also says "loves ya" ARRRRGGGGHH. I also hate leccy and placky bag. And obviously hubby etc. Don't see what's wrong with brew though.

Violetcharlotte · 24/10/2016 19:15

Seriously?? Just been reading another thread about whether the word hubby is annoying!

Must be nice to have so little to worry about Grin

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 19:15

I always use brew Blush
Disclaimer, I'm in lancs

SaltedCaramelEverything · 24/10/2016 19:20

Yabu hun. I love a cuppa with my hubby. Especially when on holibobs Grin

MetallicBeige · 24/10/2016 19:26

'Horrid, yummy, stinky' coming from fully grown adults, just no.

My mum says cuppa she also does a huge audible gulp with every mouthful of tea .

I like brew.
I have a nana and she is the best person I have ever met, so there! 😉

ThereIsNoFelange · 24/10/2016 19:29

I see toileting used in here re dogs a lot.

Yup, spends is another.

Oh also, when people say "in this house we " - like they're making a big declaration about "the way things are" in their house.

Holibobs makes me laugh though. I wouldn't use it myself.

Ilovenannyplum · 24/10/2016 19:30

YANBU
it's not a word. It's annoying.

HermioneJeanGranger · 24/10/2016 19:31

I don't mind "brew" in real life, but reading it on here makes me cringe for some reason!

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 24/10/2016 19:33

You'll love me then.

Salmotrutta · 24/10/2016 19:33

Up here it's not "cuppa" ... It's much worse than that.

It's "cuppie" Angry

As in "would you like a cuppie".

It's so childish and coy.

Like sweetie for sweets or nippie for nip of whisky!

Sweetdreamsaremadeofthis · 24/10/2016 19:33

The word brekkie does this too me aswell
