AIBU?

AIBU to find the word 'cuppa' REALLY IRRITATING?

Ok, so I'm definitely overreacting here, but whenever anyone asks me if I want a 'cuppa' I cringe inside. What's wrong with using real words? Like tea? Or Coffee? Or cup of?

I'm aware that people as grumpy as this don't usually get asked if they'd like a drink of any description, so I should count myself lucky that some people in my office still like me - but everytime anyone utters the word, I want to wince.

I don't know what hideous childhood 'cuppa' experience has scarred me to this extent - but am I alone? Does anyone else want to cause harm to a colleague when they're just being perfectly friendly and offering to make me a tea/coffee.

Having re read this, I almost want to award myself a Biscuit for being such a twat. I should probably just go home and have some Wine, shouldn't I?

I'm not keen on 'meal' as in, 'we're going for a meal'. Can't you say 'we're going to dinner (or lunch or brunch or whatever it is)'? Makes me think of meal worms for some reason or horses with their heads buried deep in a nose bucket.

Yes, it makes me so unhappy to hear this.

I don't like "meal" either. Makes me think of "mealy mouthed".

A pp mentioned "massive" - I'll raise you "mahoosive".

What is it with people on here saying " naice" instead of "nice"? So irritating! I also can't stand " innit" and people spelling "what" as "wot."

I'm not keen on people referring to a 'feed' when talking about a baby over the age of one come to think of it.

I dislike this "naice" thing too. Have only seen it here.
Surprise...

I don't like "feed" in that context either.

Flying, one of the worst 'imma' and 'sammich' offenders (among other things) is the school teacher daughter of a friend of mine. Mind you she did teach her class about Van Gogh using an episode of Dr Who Hmm

Nom nom nom, noms or nyom really grates on me as well

"very lovely" is annoying. Isn't lovely a good enough word?

(That's a list of horrible Englisg words, by the way - not posting spammy links!)

On the subject of 'meal' I have to be honest and say I am northern (tea - sorry, just is) and live in the south (dinner, of course) and so when talking about going out to eat in the evening, I say going out for a meal so as to avoid both, because TBH I'm not entirely comfortable with either!

Would 'going out for a feed' be better? Wink

My mil refers to the dummy as 'titty' or however you spell it. I hate it. I'm not keen on the word dummy either, but i suppose it's better than titty!

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach I see your dilemma Grin. At least you're not saying 'scran'!

"naice" on here is a piss-take from someone posting a while ago about a discarded shopping-list they found which included "Naice Ham"

HTH

One of my favorites expressions growing up was tittybabby. As in 'yom blarting like a tittybabby' (you are crying like an infant still at the breast)

I don't like 'Best' as an email sign off. Not sure why.....sounds a bit brusque and therefore insincere, perhaps. Just put your name if you're in a hurry.

"Sorry TMI" really pisses me off for some reason.

We're all adults and it's an anonymous forum largely for parents or parents to be, there's really no need.

I understand a warning in the subject if there's a graphic picture involved but sharing graphic information and then following up with "sorry TMI" (usually with no punctuation) seems a bit pointless and immature.

Or I'm just a grumpy, intolerant cow.
