To not make an effort with my appearance when clothes shopping

On Thursday I had the day off and DH had a dentist appointment in a nearby town so I went with him so I could run some errands. I'd just thrown on some (old) chinos, a hoodie and trainers and was wearing no make up. I didn't do my hair so it was probably a bit messy. I finished my jobs before he was done so popped in a few upmarket boutiques to pass the time. As it happened there wasn't anything I liked, but I was looking for something for a wedding next weekend, so would have bought if I'd seen something good.

In Whistles, I noticed the shop assistant look me up and down with a disgusted look on her face. I was mostly amused by her blatency - I don't really care what she thought. But it did remind me of a time in Reiss a couple of years ago, where I was dressed similarly and got the same snotty look. (That time I was shopping for a new work wardrobe and turned on my heel and promptly went down the road to another shop where the assistant was happy to help, and I ended up spending quite a lot there. I haven't set foot in Reiss since.)

It did make me wonder whether I should generally make more of an effort on the rare occasions when I go into nice clothes shops. I scrub up ok if I put the effort in, but frankly if it's just me and DH and I'm not expecting to see anyone I know I can't be bothered to dress nicely or do hair and make-up. Is that normal?

I just can't believe this happens, I think it is in your head. You are thinking you look messy and so you are seeing things that aren't there. I shop regularly in designer shops and I can wear anything from Top Shop to Prada , Nike's to Jimmy Choo's and I get treated the exactly same. In fact last week I was in Gucci and the lady complimented me on my dress which I bought for a fiver in the Next Sale. People who look 'dressed' are usually the not the super rich. The ones I see that are buying multiple items usually look like they have just got out of bed.

I buy quite a lot of designer clothes, but I tend to buy from sample sales or vintage. I've never come across an "attitude" there. Maybe it's different in normal retail shops, but it really shouldn't be. A friend of mine, who owns a high-end shop, would be very strict on any staff that were being judgey about whatever anyone was wearing.

Yeah I'm usually in Primark jeans and an Asda top my vans are my fancy shoes I got for my birthday, kids are dressed supermarket too I'm pretty sure its the fact me and the kids kind of hang about bored while my gran wanders. We must look out of place. Also where I live John Lewis is a posh expensive shop we don't have whistles or the likes.

Shop assistants are there to serve us. Honestly, who do they think they are? It's laughable.

However, I would not go shopping or anywhere else unless I was presentable. I always wear makeup and my hair is freshly washed.

Whistles is not a boutique. It's a high street shop.
